88 vs 2019

I did my time as a match going fan from the 80s to the late 90s

That 88 team (Grobellar, Hansen, Gillespie, Nicol, Ablett, McMahon, Whelan/Spackman, Houghton/Johnston, Barnes, Beardsley , Aldridge) was fucking brilliant, and their 31 game run was all in one season ... which, in my mind, is more meaningful than split across seasons. They were the best team of the time and completely dominated the league that season.

Klopp's team is also magnificent and has already achieved what they couldn't by winning in Europe (though obviously that was down to circumstance) and may well prove just as dominant in a league campaign this year.

That said, I never see the value in comparing teams from different eras. The times, style of football and opposition are completely different and the comparison is close to meaningless. I prefer just to enjoy the fact that I watched that team back then and am watching this team now, albeit mostly via screens from the comfort of the armchair.

That attack trio of Barnes Beardsley Aldridge with Houghton behind
Was nothing short of phenomenal

McMahon was your also quite brilliant important to the team as Fabinho is today

Steve Nicol was your Robertson, he was sensational that season..

If this team wins the title.. then it has to be this one. Can only be seen as great side if we win the league

But it's very tough to call, given that team of 88 would have probably easily won the European cup had we been in it and not banned

You're not a grandfather like those 3 though mate - you cannot really remember those days!

That '88 team was fantastic. Liverpool had dominated for a decade, but the 88 team took the game to a new level. They were brilliant to watch - at the end of that season the BBC's goal of the season competition was from 10 Liverpool goals - nobody else included!
We had at least 4 of them last night for this season..

There are obvious questions about how meaningful it is to compare teams from different eras, but I don't altogether agree that it's totally meaningless. IMHO one can look at the teams player for player and assess how a match-up might have gone on that basis, had they all been (a) in form and (b) around at the same time.

On that basis, despite the presence of some wonderful players in the 88 side (including two members of my version of the All-Time XI in Digger Barnes and Stevie Nicol) I have no hesitation in saying my money would have been on the current team. There are two reasons for that and their names are Virgil and Alisson. Midfield and front trios for me are more or less equivalent to one another, but Alisson is a lot more reliable than Brucie was (though the latter could pull off saves you would never believe possible when he was on his game) and Virgil may - I'll put it no higher than that for now - be the most all-round talented defender we've ever had.

Current side would win 3-2.

I had a season ticket during '87/88 season. Amazing time.
They were the better side purely because they won the title at a canter.
We'll never know if they would have won European Cups, but it's fairly likely. We were untouchable.
Today's side can never be on the same level, despite the CL win, unless they win the league.

I would expect the current team to win, but the game has moved on - fitness levels, pay scale etc. Comparing against standards of the time, the '88 team was breath-taking. They were like the Beatles.

The game has changed so much, on the field.

Players are faster, more skillful, and fitter. No Way Big Jan makes his way around like those days..

It's 100% a better team, NOW, but we've not titles, so there's no comparing. When we've 2-3 titles, let's ask again
