Each of the above options has it's own risk and opportunity. If we get Sneijder & Silva, it means we have to switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3:

Silva----Torres----Kuyt
---Sneijder--Gerrard---
----------Masher--------
Aurelio----------Johnson
-----Carra--Skrtel------
----------Reina----------

It's risky because this way we wouldn't buy any direct replacement for Alonso and the team has to adjust to a new formation. But I have to say, I really like the look of the 4-3-3 formation above and I am very interested to see how it would look on the pitch.

Aquilani would be a direct replacement for Xabi, a player of equal or perhaps even greater talent, but much less experienced. One consideration we have to take into account is that if Masher leaves for Spain in the next couple of years, which seems rather likely, we will be left with a huge gap in central midfield that we'll have to fill with brand new players. So it would be logical to buy a young CM like Aquilani now to give him some time to settle in the team and provide some continuity in case Masher leaves.

One more consideration is that Sneijder or Silva would probably cost a couple of million more than Aquilani.

Isnt Sneijder off to Inter?

Here's hoping.

I know I'm turning into a bit of a parrot here, but surely we've got 2390856 of these 'replacement' threads already existing? Didn't Oncy or Gene do something exactly the same yesterday as a 'replacement with the Xabi money' type thread?

4-3-3 can only work if we bring in some one who has the work rate and talent to match up to Essien or Gerrard in his Houlier days.

We cant brink in a cripple like Aquilani or a luxury player like Sneijder and hope that they can fit a 4-3-3. Gerrard is not going to run box to box anymore, and frankly his talent gets wasted that way. So Gerrard will be the player with license to go forward in the three. Masher occupies the specialist DM position, so the other has to be a bit more mobile than either Aquilani or Senijder.

Sneijder is a moot point anyway, as he has already signed or set to sign for Inter.
