Badminton - All England

Well I do, when LFC is so dire, good distraction.

Like Wimbledon, the English have not won any since God knows when.

I used to play regularly and semi competitively when I was a kid.

It's amazing how Malaysia and Singapore badminton have diverged since the days of Wong Shoon Keat et al. You guys are SO good at it now while we struggle, even our 'foreign imports' from Indonesia and China too.

Same goes for squash.

We are not always this good. For a long time Indonesia and China dominated and they are still dominating, lately less so from Indonesia.

Chong Wei is lucky this year without having to face China players.

Singapore has less pool of talents who are usually caught up with academics and imports are usually not the best.

Not true Mike. You guys had the Sidek brothers who won alot during that time. I can only name Ronald Susilo among the list of Singapore players.

The Sidek brothers did well for a while and won a few titles between them, and Hashim who shot to fame like a meteor and soon burned out. We had some also rans. We also had some doubles players but we never dominated.

Somehow, Malaysia managed to keep the pool of talents churning. Singapore has all the facilities but I suppose most parents are pressurising their children to study rather than to excel in sports. I think this will change as Singapore matures and will soon turn to arts and sports. Your football is better than ours at the moment!

Warning!
This is one sport I know that have killed those who are unfit! Quite a few of my acquaintances were knocked off in the courts. It looks easy but it kills.

Shit. Were they really 'knocked off'? Or did they just give up?

I played when I was younger, was thinking of taking it up again. But now you've scared me Y1.

They literally died on the court. Heart attack!

Because badminton is deceptively such a slow game when it can be actually very fast and we stretch ourselves to reach for the shuttlecock!

Play doubles, it is safer. If you much play singles, don't be a hero!
