Alisson has to be in that conversation, surely? It's not just the saves, but also he starts much of our attacking play.

Currently? Yes it has to be Alisson, but the general consensus on reddit is that its between him and Curtois ( most leaning towards the latter).

40 years or so. He is in the conversation with Schmeichel, Buffon, Van der Sarr, Seamon etc...

Curtois, is a 6ft7 monster but how many goal involvements has he had?

Oh sorry, for some reason I missed the "ever" part.
Yes Alisson is among the best keepers ever.
A lot has changed in 40 years, though. Keepers today are a lot fitter and need to use their feet more. In some teams they almost act like the deepest playmaker on the pitch.
30 years ago Neville Southall stood in goal and looked like this:

So yeah, for me it's a keeper who played between 1998 and now.

Unfortunately, he played for Man U.

Neville Southall in his prime was brilliant, one of the best shot stoppers of his era,

I know, my point is would a keeper be able to look like that today and play in the Prem?

No, he wouldn't but there's a certain unfairness in comparing to previous eras. Measure by the standards, knowledge, training, technology of the day.

How would today's keepers do facing a wet ball that weighed the same as a brick when it hits them in the face?

@Judge Jules Cine your input probably carries the most weight, you've seen them all, from Yashin to Alisson. The balls were much harder then, but theplayers were a lot slower with less technical abilities

I don't think they were slower or had less technical ability man for man, but they weren't as fit or as intensively trained, so the football overall was of a lower standard.

IMO Alisson is now the best keeper LFC have ever had, with Clem a close second, but sorry - I haven't the foggiest who the best keeper in history was. It's hard enough just to pick Liverpool's best TBH.

Thing is, if Neville Southall came along today, he'd train and live like today's players do, and he might even be a little better as a result... He was a monster back there and undoubtedly the best in the world for a few seasons. His injury is a HUGE part of us catching them to win the double in 1986.
