Liverpool may be racing towards their first English league title in 30 years, but it is Manchester United, the club that has dominated much of the Premier League era, that remains the best-supported football team in the Republic of Ireland, according to research carried out for a forthcoming book. Between them, the research suggests, the two clubs have over a million supporters in this country.
For the survey, conducted by Empathy Research for An Atlas of Irish Sport, to be published by Cork University Press in the coming months, 1,033 people were interviewed.
Forty-six per cent said they supported a team and, of those, 33 per cent say they follow Manchester United, with 29 per cent describing themselves as fans of Liverpool. The figures suggest that the two clubs have 535,500 and 464,100 adult supporters respectively in the 26 counties. Those numbers do not, however, include minors.

It is quite a way back to Celtic in third place, on 14 per cent, and Arsenal on 10 per cent. Two Airtricity clubs feature in the top 10, with Cork City in sixth position on 7 per cent of those who described themselves as a supporter, and Dundalk, who are tied with Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur for eighth position, on four per cent. Shamrock Rovers come in next along with Leeds United.

Growing up most of the kids my age supported Utd.

Older people were split between, Leeds, Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton.

Okay, I'm getting REALLY close to a full scale 'mad as hell' gun assault on towns and cities all over the place because of this fecking apostrophe abuse. There aren't even any 'statue's' to pull down!

I can vividly remember getting asked if I supported Rangers or Celtic at primary school in the late 80's and I answered I've never heard of them, I support Liverpool. That got me laughed at.

Everyone in the North supports Liverpool or United with a faux interest in Scottish football

What a gloryhunting gang of ingrates.

Every Irish football supporter supports Celtic by the way (they should support Hibs) at least as a second team. That figure should be 100%.

8% support Barcelona!? What the fuck?

A mate of mine from Ireland used to be a Man Utd fan, then switched to Chelsea, then switched to Arsenal. I can see him switching to Liverpool now we've won the CL and the League and Arsenal are shite. He's been cheering for us this season.

I'd say very few support Celtic anymore. And I reckon that Barcelona stat is people under 15.

Was listening to a football analyst the other day, & apparently outside of Europe, the majority of minors don't identify with supporting a particular team, but rather will follow a star player & switch allegiances if that player moves.

Which sounds fucking mental to me, but I suppose actually makes sense in today's celebrity/icon obsessed culture.

That's fucking depressing

I couldn't give a shit about Celtic to be honest.

I don't care about Celtic either. The Scottish League is crap. When was the last time someone other than Celtic or rangers won the league? Was it Aberdeen when Ferguson was managing them?

Having said that, Celtic winning the European cup with a team comprised of players who were all born within 30* miles of Celtic park is some achievement.

*Or was it 50 miles?
