It's fascinating to hear just how much respect his contemporaries had for his game.

I belong to the generation that endured that 30-year league drought from start to finish. Apart from a few memorable seasons, it’s not exactly an era to look back on fondly.

Still, I consider myself fortunate to have witnessed this guy play for us.

yea i forget i miss gerrard until i see highlight videos.

youtube chucked me a sturridge video earlier too, i think he’s kind of underrated / forgotten. very limited time at his peak with us though.

I know it goes with the territory, but for as long as I can remember, most big wins have been tainted by something. I remember us winning the CL and the stories starting about Gerrard to Chelsea, it was gutting. After years of mediocrity finally something and then bam, it felt like we'd had the rug pulled from under us. It felt the same for a while this season, like we were going to win it but we were also going to lose our biggest players. Thank fuck it's worked out ok.

It sucks that he never got the trophies (and the recognition that come with them) that his talent deserved.

Can you imagine prime Gerrard in Klopp's team with Salah and Mane... wow.

Gerrards entire career was stifled by poor managers and poor owners.
He deserved more.

Controversial maybe but I think prime Suarez and Sturridge were equally as good
But the rest of team?

That Klopp team between 2018-2022 was probably the only time in the last 30 years we had a top/world class player in every position.

The only player we missed in that team was a Gerrard type mid or an AM, which would have made our team unstoppable.

Depends what one's specifically looking at IMO. I'm on record here as saying that Suarez is the most spectacularly gifted player I've ever seen in the red shirt, but there's an argument for saying that Gerrard could do a wider range of things well.

They were good at what they did - but they could never do all that Gerrard could do - Sturridge would break down if he had to do 2 consecutive runs like Gerrard, and I cannot see Suarez going into RB in a CL final to cover that area - no matter how good he was.

Gerrard - there is no player like him I have ever seen in my life - and my football memory stretches back to 1982 - he was the definition of a complete football player - of the highest standard in any position he occupied.

Personally I've always made it clear that its in the striker category. Within that category he's probably the best I've ever seen play for LFC. Even Carra admits it in the overlap, but he put Kenny and Rush in there because of longevity and trophies.

Best overall is hands down Stevie G.

Gerrard absolutely is the most complete player to play in this league for me. Hands down. Not the most talented in any particular area, but could absolutely do bits in whatever outfield position you put him in.

Totally.
I was simply making the point about prime Suarez and Sturridge being the equal of Mane and Salah.
Imagine dragging a thread off topic on SCM

Just to add that Stevie himself described Suarez as the best striker he ever played with.

I'm also on record that George Best was the greatest player there's ever been, and the reason is that he had both Suarez' explosive skillz and Stevie's comprehensive skillset. Pele, Maradona, Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane - NONE of them had that combo.

Did they have the technology to put you on record back then?

Gerrard was so fucking good.
I mean I don't think I appreciated just how good he was until you see what we've had in our midfield since - no disrespect to the Ginis, or Hendos, or Gravvy or Alexis etc ... but Gerrard was just a monster of a player who if he was playing in Klopp or Slot's Liverpool would be getting even more plaudits than he got in his generation ... #1 or #2 in our history.

Fucking legend - I wish we could sign him now, let him play every remaining game for 5-10 minutes, so he could get that one medal he was missing from his collection.

All being well, I hope to have another 45-50 years left on this planet. I'm already resigned to the idea that I'll never see a midfielder match Gerrard's overwhelming skillset. I also don't think I'll see a player carry a club for such a long and extended period of time. I hope history appreciates him to the full extent of his powers. I'll certainly be on that campaign trial at any opportunity.

I saw the tail end of Barnes. I watched the whole of Gerrard. I witnessed Torres and Suarez. I see the numbers of Salah. Nothing compares to Gerrard.
I thought it would be funny to get chatgpt to rewrite nothing compares 2 u but with Stevie G in mind. I was wrong.

It's been seven hours and fifteen years
Since you ran the pitch at Anfield
I go out every match, but nothing I see
Can ever quite match your will

Since you've been gone, I can score with who I want
Pass the ball with who I choose
But it just don’t feel the same, no way
Not without your Scouse boots

Chorus
Nothing compares
Nothing compares
To you... Gerrard

Verse 2
You slid, you scored, you carried us through
That Istanbul night was wild
The Champions League in your mighty grip
You played like a man possessed, a child of pride

Bridge
Sometimes it rains down in Liverpool
But the Kop still sings your name
They say time heals a legend's absence
But I still miss that thunder in your game

Chorus
'Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares
To you... oh Stevie G

I’m glad someone has finally recognised my comprehensive skill set.
