Boycott the World Cup?

Seeing growing calls for the England national team to boycott the Trump Glorification Cup in the summer among politicians and in the media. I’m sure other European countries affected by his tariffs and bullying will strongly consider this as well - can’t imagine Denmark going if they qualify, for instance, and other Nordic nations would likely support them.

I say everyone should absolutely boycott it. Football is not so important in the grand scheme of things, but this is actually a type of message that would get through to Trump - a threat by most Western European nations to pull of the World Cup would be potentially more effective than withholding economic or military cooperation, which he doesn’t care about anyway. Hit him where it hurts - denying him the chance at self-aggrandizement.

I am an American that grew in Brighton as a Liverpool fan. I fully support a boycott of the world cup. I have not decided whether I will watch matches in Canada or Mexico, although Fifa’s corrupt “peace prize” leans me that way.

I am also half Portuguese and very much hoping to go to matched in Portugal and Morroco in 4 years.

But….Do not expect that any boycott will matter to Trump! First, he is insane. I truly believe that. Second, he will accept any aggression thrown his away and just bounce it back.

Morally, though, I think a boycott is a good way to go.

I've always wanted to watch a football match in Monterrey

The US might try annex it mid match though

I boycotted the one in Qatar, and I will boycott this one. FIFA are corrupt, and I boycott most internationals. It's a bit crappy for my national players like Bradley, but we are stuck in this eternal corrupt loop forever until the majority grow a set of balls and miss a few football games.

A boycott is for the FA to decide. That drags in Prince William as FA Chair.
Furthermore, UEFA requires no political interference in the running of National Associations (this was raised as an issue with the appointment of the football regulator).
People are taking about this like it's do'able but it's a non-starter.
There was no boycott of Qatar despite human rights violations, it won't happen here.
But the second Trump tries to involve himself in the tournament, crowds need to boo the fuck out of him and the players need to tell him to do one if he tries to interfere like he did with the Club Word Cup final. A bit of side-eye from Cole Palmer won't be enough this time.
Hopefully the cunt will be history by then anyway.

I don't think a boycott is either likely to happen or will be effective.

Will boost the USA's chances of winning the thing, which would please Trump to no end.

(Selfishly I don't want a boycott because I'm actually attending the tournament!)

I have got ticket to some games in Dallas, and prices will come down, so will likely go to more. But doing it for the young fella. Not bothered otherwise, FIFA have ruined it....

Unless Ireland clinch that playoff spot..

They need to move even more games to Canada and Mexico. Make the US virtually irrelevant in the overall scheme.

They're not boycotting anything. Question is, will we give USA the Russia treatment if they annex Greenland?

There won't be a boycott imho, and it was confirmed yesterday by our President of the football federation. She said that they can't be responsible for any political standpoint, and thats how it should be in all honesty.

If Trump annex Greenland FIFA should 100% move the games out if the US, but we all know Infantino wont do that.
He's as corrupt as they come.

I'm going to get around the ban boycott by watching the matches on terrestrial TV that doesn't require me paying for anything and they don't know how many people are watching.

I don't remember how many games I watched of the Qatar world cup - I think less than 5, and that was only when the boys were watching.
I just wasn't interested, and I assume it will be the same here too.

If I was in my yoof, I'd definitely use this world cup for 'footy & backpacking' ...

Given that there are other countries over the years that have been dodgy in one way or another, I can't see there being a boycott.

Trade tariffs are not a reason. Nothing illegal about trade tariffs.

As far as Greenland is concerned, it's all just words now. If Trump goes to war over it then that's another matter, but chances are he'd probably ban a lot of countries from entering if the US is at war with them, so a boycott wouldn't be necessary.
