Yesterday was an opportunity to lay down a marker, an absolute statement of intent..

Instead we wake up this morning to be a bit of laughing stock..

With all the talk of FSG restricting transfer activity to selling players to buy and other Teams strengthening are we in danger of becoming a 'flash in the pan' ?

Now personally I'm not arsed about yesterday's result, it basically confirmed to me if you are not 100% focused, mentally and physically prepared against City you stand absolutely no chance against them.

I am a little bothered about our unprofessionalism leading to the game. Celebrations imho should have waited till the Trophy lift. However given the suspension to the PL and the longer break between games, I can understand why..

I don't think I've ever seen a team celebrate winning something in such a manner without actually lifting the Trophy first... Strange times indeed..

To me now its all about how we respond.. Liverpool need to shut up our critics and absolutely smash that points record.. Our away form at the moment in all competitions is a cause for concern and needs to be addressed.. It also highlights the need to strengthen up Top.. We can't rely on the front 3 in the manner we have been moving forward to compete at the highest level in all competitions. Origi as back up certainly is not the answer

As for the rest of the Season, reset and carry on.. Then have those celebrations again at the end of the season, when all the records are smashed

Get the points record, there is your statement of intent, sign some players to strengthen that forward line.. There's another..

Great Liverpool Teams of the past build upon success with more success over a sustained period, this team must start to do the same..

Its whole new ball game to this squad, a new mindset, being winners.. They must deliver to be considered one of the Greatest Liverpool Teams ever..

A laughing stock that is twenty pints clear at the top of the league having won it at the earliest point in the season ever.
You may need to go onto an online thesaurus to get the meaning of "laughing stock"

I think based on last night's performance we certainly where.. Particularly Robertson.

Talk about overreacting. You can still delete this thread, and pretend it didnt happen.

We just won the league, and won it at the earliest point in the season ever and are 20 points clear of the most expensive team ever built in history.
Now thats a statement of intent. The intent to win some more trophies.

Winning in the manner we did is not to be sniffed at, I agree.. That's history now, it's about moving forward..

It was a little bit disappointing the two best teams in the world right now came up against each other, and we where not just beaten.. but thrashed.. This could have been avoided..

I just thought we where a little bit unprofessional leading up to game.. My point is how we respond now moving forward..

City have a lot to play for, and could be European champions by the end of August.. that will hurt a little if that happens, particulary on top of this result..

It's about laying markers, statements of intent and building upon our success with more success moving forward. To me its clear we need to strengthen to sustain our success moving forward..

Twice now we have been found wanting.. 1st against Athletico Madrid now City..

That's the trouble with you die hard supporters, you look at results and performances through tunnel vision, tribalistic allegiance.

I tend to look from a wider perspective as I'm not as involved. Bet Klopp is well pissed that result last night..

Christ on a bike where to start?

A new mindset? This squad got to the Champions League final only to lose to an injury to a star player, two bowlers from the goalkeeper and a wonder goal, they dusted themselves down and won it the following year. Not only did they win it, they won it by beating Barcelona 4-0 a day after seeing Vincent Kompany score the goal of his career to put City in charge of the title race and then followed up the crushing disappointment of missing out on the league by a point to cruise past a good Spurs team in the final. Then they followed it up obliterating the league the following year.

Celebrations should have waited? Disagree, the league being won in the way it was is something that was out of their hands. If they can't celebrating winning Liverpool's first league in 30 years when it happens when can they?

We're not Leicester but 'not seeing a team celebrate like that's Leicester did it when they won it in a very similar way.

Laughing stock is ridiculous too. Man United lost 5-0 to Newcastle one year and won the league. We tonked City a couple of times and they won the league or other competitions. It happens. Do we need to improve the squad a bit? Definitely. Is your post absolutely ridiculous? Also definitely.

Talk about underreacting. Since City got their act together again they've looked better than us. And they'll strengthen. They're our biggest rivals and if you think the nature of that defeat was something to dismiss with a giggle you're in for a sobering surprise.

We weren't found out against Athletico. They did a number on us out there alright to protect a 1-0 lead. It happens. They're one of the best at doing that. They were absolutely battered at Anfield. Blessed to make to extra time. Even then we were ahead until Adrian had a massive brainfart moment and then left in a second he should have saved too. Basically we lost out to one of the best teams in Europe through a combination of bad finishing, bad luck and goalkeeper ineptitude. In knockout football that can happen.

If you think it's a reason to question the mentality of the players or call the league champions a laughing stock then you're plain wrong. It was hard to watch but fucking hell it happens. How many times have we battered them when they were chasing the game?

Id some losing at their ground then getting beat at home over 2 legs is being found out, what ever way you look at it..

It also highlight problems with our current away form..

Pre and post lockdown

How is it being found out? It's losing a 2 legged football match. Happens to every team in the CL every season bar 2. Particularly given as said above we absolutely battered them at Anfield and should been out of sight. We missed some chances then paid for it when Adrian went mad. The end.

I personally don't think we are a laughing stock. It's essentially how we have been perceived with our rivals in the manner of that defeat with that game.

Again it's about setting marker and moving forward. Its about how we respond to that here.

Recent defeats to big teams

Chelsea
Athletico Madrid x 2
And Now City

3 of which where away from home

In the mix a draw against Everton, away from home

Big Games.. Big big games..

It is little a cause for concern whatever way you want to look at it . I'm absolutely sure klopp would not be happy about it..

It highlights the need to strengthen.

But we lost the away leg first.. Both legs. That tells me we failed to address Athletico much publicised game plan, both home and away..

That is being found out..

We have struggled against Top teams since..

Right again. Chelsea game. FA cup (not really a big game these days). Poor performance definitely. Included massive Adrian howler. Athletico I don't think I should have to explain again. They're great at what they do and were battered at Anfield and got away with it. Last night was very poor for a number of reasons, but I think accusing this squad of a lack of professionalism is ridiculous. Yes I do think we need to improve the squad as there is an over reliance on some players, but your post is extremely knee-jerk.

I don't care if other fans perceive us as a laughing stock.

Jesus Christ we don’t have bounce from one end of an extreme to the other.

City are a wonderful side but soft at the back.
We are still better.

I think even without strengthening we’ll win it agsin next year. But for me it’s about beyond that and you don’t want to have to replace the whole spine in one summer.

To beat City pretty much everyone to a man has to play well. Last night pretty much everyone to a man was rubbish. Disappointing but understandable.

after 30 years I’ll give them a pass.

I remember Hansen talking about a season where we won the league early, were untouchable and didn’t win a game after.

don’t overreact.

Did you see the game at Anfield? It should have been about 5-0. Athletico got battered. Then Adrian messed it up. That's not being found out. That's Athletico stealing one (which we've done ourselves in Europe over the years). We have played one top team since as that was the last game before lockdown. Your sample size is probably a little bit on the small side.

I agree with a lot of what Ninja has said here. The top sides down the years have built on success, and as had been said elsewhere, the harder work is retaining the title.

In terms of this season, last night didn't really matter, of course. We won the league, and that is the important thing. But it is as clear a reminder as there is that our closest rivals are capable of destroying our full stength side. And that is our closest rivals who will be desperate to get the title back and won't be afraid to strengthen to do so.

We have looked pretty poor since the restart, and actually we were hardly at our best in the month or so before lockdown either (couple of defeats, a few scraped wins).

Maybe with another break and pre-season training we will reset, and sort things out, but we are kidding ourselves if we don't think that next season is gonna be even tougher and we don't need to at least think about strengthening to deal with it.

And the title of the thread is 'building' on success, not stagnating on success. If you don't build it they won't come. If you want to keep winning, you need to keep strengthening the squad, not sitting back and pointing at Harvey Elliott as if he's the new Messi.

I would reckon almost everyone would agree that next season will be even tougher, I don't think anyone has said it won't be.

Yep. That is the title of the thread and then the post veers wildly away from the title.

When did this City get their act together thing begin? yesterday?

Cos they lost to Chelsea last week.

Yes they will strengthen, yes they are our biggest rivals yes we need to build on success -100% agree on all those points.
we lost to them 5-1 a few seasons ago and it toughened us up loads. We all know that the two teams are so much closer than the scoreline suggests.
The players have been waiting to win the league since the lockdown, they've been immensely professional for years.

How does it?. It's identifying our failings and looking to build upon that..

@Richey nailed it. Understood the manner of my post..

Strengthen, build upon success.. We are now winners, completely different mindset to Liverpool teams of the recent past..

Losing 4 Nil against our main rivals in any competition or circumstances show they have incredible Hunger for success..

I'm not saying we don't, but we can certainly learn a lot from city and their recent success and that result moving forward as we need that type of mindset and to strengthen to maintain success..
