Canelo v Golovkin

Now that the Mayweather-McGregor clown show is over, who's excited about this?

Is this the fight to revive boxing? I can't remember a better match-up in the last decade.

Predictions?

After Golovkin's last couple of fights there may be a temptation to see him as more beatable than before. It isn't a temptation which would sway me though. His punching power remains nothing short of frightening and, though Canelo may run him closer than anyone else has, I still think Golovkin will finish it late on.

I'm tempted to pick Golovkin as he's one of my favourite fighters. But I have to admit that this is going to be very close.

Canelo is a superb fighter with a very well-rounded game. Very underrated defensively, and an excellent offensive package. His body punching in particular is superb. He's a bigger and better version of Kell Brook who gave Golovkin some problems in his fight last year.

Having said that, the ones who're rooting for Canelo better remember that Golovkin himself is highly underrated technically.

People focus on his thundering power, but forget that his footwork and balance are very very good. His punching technique is also absolutely world class - guy doesn't waste a punch, and makes everything count.

That said, Golovkin needs to knock Canelo out. If he leaves it to the judges, he might struggle. Canelo is wildly popular, and he has the nous to keep things flashy and impress judges even if he isn't actually causing a lot of damage to his opponents.

I can't wait. I'll have Smith on ITV 4 in the evening then this card. Pissed off Nicola Adams is on the card as I find no entertainment in women's boxing.

Back to the main event and I have seen a lot of boxers and pundits going for Canelo. I'm going GGG. He beat Jacobs who was rumoured to be in the ring at 190. Nobody seems to speak about the poor performance Canelo put in against Chavez. Liam Smith was out of his depth whilst Kahns glass chin made an appearance.

Fight of the year for me. Can't wait

I'm utterly unsure.

If I had to choose then I'd pick GGG. Could go either way though.

Looking forward to it & I'm gonna stay up for it too.

Pretty meh undercard, and the fight isn't generating the kind of popular interest it should be.

No doubt part of it is the after effect of the two dickheads fighting in August.

I'm very excited though.

I rarely get up in the early hours for these things nowadays, but I'm so getting up for this.

It's a sad indictment on the sport that that ridiculous circus got more interest than this.

A lot of conflicting media reports about the fight start time. Some saying half 3, some 4, a few half 4 & even one saying 5am!

Anyone seen any credible ringwalk times?

If it's half 3/4 I'll stay up, if it's 5am I'll go to be early & get up early instead.

They were all from UK media. US media (including the official streaming sites) are all saying 8pm PST main event which equates to 3am UK.

I'm staying up then. Good job I've got a crate of Becks in reserve in the cellar!

Fuck knows how/why UK media has got the time wrong.

It all depends on the undercard fights surely? 3am is the earliest it could start.

Yeah, but the UK media saying the main event will start at 5am (the express if memory serves) is just damned ridiculous when it could start at 3am!

Hopefully the undercards won't run over too much. I can't believe how much they charge for PPV in the US, $100 for the mayweather fight & $79 for this one. I think £20 is too fucking much myself!

Canelo the favourite with the bookies apparently. Interesting.
Not just the bookies, but a large section of former boxers/trainers (including Floyd) thinks Canelo isn't just going to win, but is actually going to knock Golovkin out.

I'm pretty skeptical of that idea, but of course isn't beyond the realm of possibility.

If the knockout does come, it has to be from Canelo going to GGG's body. Golovkin has a granite chin, and in his 350+ amateur and pro fights, no fighter has ever even knocked him down. But the body's a slightly different ball game. Canelo has a lethal liver shot (remember the one he used against Liam Smith), and that's a shot that can hurt anybody. There is also apparently a story going on, that Golovkin got put down in sparring by such a body shot from this fairly unknown guy called Tyrell Hendrix.

From whatever the Canelo camp has been saying, it's pretty clear that their gameplan also is to target Golovkin's body.

Yet that's surely a high risk strategy as well. You try and go to the body, you open up your face. And for all the talk of Canelo's excellent chin, he's never been hit by anything with even 60% of Golovkin's power.

Golovkin on the other hand has faced much bigger punchers than Canelo - Lemieux, Jacobs and Stevens can seriously crack it at 160. In fact, I've said before that Lemieux's power is even more murderous than Golovkin's.

Excellent summary IMHO. I'm sticking with my choice of GGG winning late on after seeing a vid just now of Sugar Ray Leonard, who may just be my favourite fighter ever, giving GGG the (narrow) edge.

I'm giving Golovkin the slight edge as well, but I wouldn't bet on it. A lot will depend on which Golovkin comes out.

On the one hand, there's the guy who goes out and completely blitzkriegs his opponents without any regard for what they can throw at him. See the Brook or Monroe Jr fights. I'll be majorly concerned if he tries that with Canelo. Canelo is superb at slipping, catching and countering. If Brook and Monroe Jr can do it, Canelo will do it even better, and he hits much harder than those two. There's also the danger of that body shot slipping in.

On the other hand, there's the guy who respects his opponent's power, and fights behind his jab. See the Lemieux and Jacobs fights. That perhaps maybe a solid blueprint for beating a guy like Canelo as GGG's jabbing game is world class, and he is capable of hurting and intimidating opponents with it. But the risk with that is that it makes the fight very tactical. Canelo is wily enough to fight a tactical fight, and take it to 12 rounds. In that situation, even if Golovkin has landed more punches, chances are that the partisan crowd and judges will give it to Canelo.

He has to make this fight the perfect combination of his two styles. Jab jab jab and cut the ring in the first few rounds. But up the intensity by the 5th round or so. If Canelo starts getting frustrated or goes to the ropes, he has to try and take him out.

Very good start to the fight. Going almost exactly as I expected. Remarkably even between the two fighters with contrasting styles.
