Poor racist Uruguayans...

Edinson Cavani: Man Utd forward charged over Instagram post

17 December 2020

Manchester United's Edinson Cavani has been charged by the Football Association for a social media post containing a Spanish phrase that is offensive in some contexts.

The Uruguayan sent the message after scoring United's winner at Southampton on 29 November.

Cavani, 33, subsequently deleted the post and apologised when the meaning that could be attached was pointed out.

The striker could be banned for three matches if he is found guilty.

An FA statement, with reference to new guidelines agreed in the summer, said the post was alleged to be "insulting and/or abusive and/or improper and/or brought the game into disrepute".

It is also alleged "that the comment constitutes an aggravated breach" which "included reference, whether express or implied, to colour and/or race and/or ethnic origin".

Cavani has until Monday, 4 January to provide a response to the misconduct charge which United say they will consider, but repeated their message that there was no malicious intent behind the forward's post.

"Manchester United and all of our players are fully committed to the fight against racism and we will continue to work with the FA - along with other governing bodies and organisations, and through our own campaigns - in that regard," said United in response to the charge.

"We note the FA decision today to charge Edinson Cavani for his social media reply to a friend's message of congratulations following the Southampton game.

"Edinson and the club were clear that there was absolutely no malicious intent behind the message, which he deleted and apologised for as soon as he was informed that it could have been misconstrued.

"The player and the club will now consider the charge and respond to the FA accordingly."

Cavani issued an apology shortly after posting the message on Instagram following United's win on 29 November.

"It was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game," said the former Napoli and Paris St-Germain striker.

"The last thing I wanted to do was cause offence to anyone.

"I am completely opposed to racism and deleted the message as soon as it was explained that it can be interpreted differently."

8 matches doesn't signal nearly enough virtue. Has to be at least 10 if not a lot more.

Charged by the FA for using the same word Luis used towards Evra on the socials.

Minimum 3 game ban incoming.

If memory serves, The FA justified the 8 match ban for Suarez as being necessary to send a signal to everyone, so it doesn't happen again. Well the signal didn't work. So they need to raise it up to around 15-20 matches this time. Anything else would just prove the FA don't care about racism, and are in fact racist themselves.

Just as he was finding form.

Hopefully Ole can hold onto his job while the ban stick is being waved about.

It does seem that the word used is acceptable in Uruguian culture.

And to give Cavani some leeway, he deleted the message and publically apologised straight away.

Something Suarez never did.

He's not in that backward hateful racist country anymore. He's in England. So he should have learned to speak English.

Really though, shouldn't he have known?
I mean it must have made the headlines in Uruguay.

Imagine you go to Colombia, and the word 'the' is racist there, you know it, it's headline news. It's still a matter of time before you say that word, it's an innate part of your language, it's impossible. Like the yes/no game. The only solution is to not speak or interact with anyone which is where this woke stupidity is headed. I for one will revel in that new world.

Well, I get what your saying but "the" isn't a good comparison. I think Negrito is pretty avoidable

Yeah it's not like they haven't been together at every international break/tournament since then either. So he's a stupid Manc cunt and I hope he gets banned

I cannot abide by these articles that are 100% reliant on what someone said, but don't say what they said.

I'm not a fucking child.

Perhaps 'mate' is a better comparison. I don't think it's that easy to avoid.

You're spot on. I happen to have a friend of quite long standing from Montevideo, a genuinely nice, decent bloke who wouldn't dream of insulting anyone (and whose skin happens to be at least as dark as quite a few mixed race people I know, though I don't think he's one). He confirmed what you say here about the "offending" word and was absolutely livid about the Suarez/Evra business, which he - and, according to him anyway, many Uruguayans - saw as an artificial orgy of virtue-signalling revealing a VERY patronising attitude here and in Europe about what people from other countries/continents "ought" to think and do. "They do realise Suarez is mixed race himself, do they?", he asked me once, and I had to say I doubted it. I haven't heard from him yet about the Cavani stuff, so that could be interesting.

Yeah, it's defo virtue-signalling and a step backwards in some ways. Skin colour is as irrelevant as hair colour (obviously there is still racism) in these cultures. It's like calling someone blondie. They are blonde. It's a fact. We're not all petrified and shamed from saying the word.

Anyway, I cba with this discussion again, except to say I hope he gets a hefty fucking ban.

There's a chance your friend is now woke just like the rest of the planet, and will therefore see things from the FA point of view.

Alright Ginge.. calm down.

Yeah but isn't this like Black in Portuguese (negro, where the alternative .. preta/o .. is offensive)? Even if you know the word can be considered offensive in some countries it's almost impossible not to use it when speaking your mother-tongue, where it's not at all offensive.

Nothing against "negro" considering it means "Black". But Negrito is like saying "blackie"

It depends on context. Suarez was doing it to be offensive as he was retaliating to what Evra had called him.

However, it is also a term of endearment. There's a brand of rum in Spain called Negrita, and it has a picture of an old black woman on it.

The word is still the same. It's like

Suarez: Get fucked mate
Cavani: Thanks mate

Didn't the FA say some shit about context not mattering? It's an objective test. Which is fucking stupid, but so is the universe.
