Speculation:
According to reports in the Express & Star, new Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish is planning a £9million bid for Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam. Is that the sort of signing that could help McLeish to win over doubting Villa fans?

To be honest, despite all the talk of transfers regarding Aquilani, I'd rather force him to stay on rather than shell out £10-12 Million for Charlie Adam.
Aquilani, the anti-Adam.
if only his bones were made of anti-adam
He played a full season with Juve so I'm guessing that he could do the same here.
I accept the fact that he would rather stay in Italy, but he has a contractual obligation to play for Liverpool. Why else did he sign for 5 years?

I don't really rate Charlie Adam. The excessive fee Blackpool are demanding is laughable.

Disregard all the talk of Aquilani wanting to stay in Italy, do you still think he isn't good enough to play for us?

I mean come on, we're comparing Aquilani who now is a regular for the Azzurri's with Charlie McAdam.

Talk of contractual obligations and of Aquilani's ability is all very well, but it won't help us one bit if we force him to come back and he plays like a blocked drain - which BTW would further reduce the fee we could then charge for him.

Convince him that he still has a role to play for us and that he's an important player. What made him want to join in the first place?

...plus his career was going nowhere fast and he needed to do something drastic to kick-start it. Now that's happened, I'm afraid I can't see any assurances about his place in our squad trumping his overriding wish to stay at home in Italy.

Re: Re: Charlie Adam

I'd love him to stay, but purple is going home and that's just fact

I'm usually a realist and I've more or less accepted that he'll leave during this window. But it just frustrates me that we're about to replace him with the likes of McAdam.

Re: Re: Charlie Adam

But if a player doesn't want to stay

*shrugs*

Fuck em. I'd rather have chubby mcadam who actually wants to play for us

I would sooner have Adam than that chicken shit Aqualini.

Then again, I would probably have Momo back before Aqualini.

Villa were today ready to hijack Liverpool’s move for Charlie Adam as part of Alex McLeish’s rebuilding job.

The Blackpool midfielder is available for £9m after the Tangerines’ relegation to the Championship and Villa are ready to revive their interest after McLeish’s appointment yesterday.

They were linked with a swoop in January and asked to be kept informed of developments with Liverpool also keen on the playmaker.

Reports suggested big spending Liverpool had entered into preliminary talks with Blackpool this week but sources close to Adam insisted he is yet to directly speak to any club.

McLeish gave Adam his Rangers debut in 2003
and he made 86 appearances for the Scottish giants.

The 52-year-old then handed the midfielder his Scotland bow in a 1-0 win against Austria in Vienna in 2007.

Blackpool are ready to cash in on the 25-year-old – whom they bought from Rangers for £500,000 in 2009 – despite triggering a 12-month extension to his contract in May.

Adam has made it clear he will not stay at Bloomfield Road following relegation and after moves to Liverpool and Tottenham collapsed in January.

Villa will have cash to spend when Ashley Young completes his £16m move to Manchester United and need to beef up their midfield after the exit of Nigel Reo-Coker.

McLeish, controversially appointed as Villa boss after quitting Blues on Sunday, spoke to owner Randy Lerner about transfer targets during his interview and has been linked with a swoop for former charge Scott Dann.

There's 2 consecutive 'losses' I wouldn't mind in Sylvain Marveaux and Charlie Adam. 😛

Nostalgia and the fact that we need another defensive midfielder.

I thought mono played best on front on the midfield rather than behind it. Like what yaya toure does for city. Win the ball further up the pitch.

Although I liked Aquilani as a player, as far as our team is concerned IMO Adam is a better fit and is certainly more proven in the PL than Purple. Think there are a few rose-tinted glasses being worn in here. Aquilani had some good games for us and showed potential ... but he was also slagged off on here on more than a handful of occasions, couldn't tackle and was often shrugged off the ball. I would take him back if we were going to be butt-fucked over his fee but if not then Adam would be an excellent addition to our squad.

This is just going round in circles.

Would Adam be a better fit for us than Aquilani?

Most probably; but we're not talking about replacements, are we? The only way we'll see the back of Aquifanny is to take a 12 million hit on him and sell him for 6 million (of which 5% goes to Roma). That's not going to happen so he's gong to be on our bench next season.

If Adam comes in that makes 12 midfielders.

Granted, some of them are shit; but to bring in midfielders when we're desprately in need of wingers and a left-back is ridiculous.

The window has only been open a couple of weeks Avvy ! Nobody, bar those that matter, know who our actual targets are and who is going to leave.

We may end up selling a MFer or two and getting a winger (or two) and maybe even a LB (that I don't feel agree is a priority).
Adam hasn't got a Mediterranean complexion and he doesn't wear a hairband. :🙂
We can send Adam to Julie's Sunbeds in Rock Ferry for a fake and I'm sure Aqua will be happy to include a few of his hairbands in his transfer fee - though don't know what Adam is going to use them on.

We may,we may not.

I just think we should address other areas first before strengthening midfield.

Why do you think LB isnt a priority?

Who do we have there; Kuntchesky,Insua,Aurelio and Johnson.

I don't think it's as easy as saying we'll get this guy first, then this one and this .. and then we're done. Negotiations may be cooking on all fronts and there are probably many factors that affect when deals can be closed out. So it's not ABCDE but rather Alphabet Soup.

Johnson was class there over the last few weeks of the season. Kelly was class at RB. LB - Johnson (Aurelio, Robinson) RB - (Kelly, Johnson, Flanagan) is good enough IMO when we are better off putting the cash elsewhere (CB, 2xWingers, Striker).
I agree with that. We should always strengthen anywhere we can, but fullback is not a priority IMO.
Agreed.

CB has been a priority for two seasons now. Wingers (or at least one quality wide man) has been a requirement since before Adam was a boy. I think the CB is more pressing but, ultimately, we're not going to be champions without satisfying both IMO.

I won't be too bothered if we bring a fullback in but it's well down the list of priorities.

We have players that have shown flashes of ability in pretty much every position, to be honest, but in each position we also lack the consistency to make a real title run. What we need to be doing, in my opinion, is evaluating every potential transfer with "does this improve our team?" I'm meaning the "first eleven" really but I agree with Ryan's notion that there isn't necessarily a true set first eleven players for an entire season. What I mean is that are we making ourselves better in that position by buying a player. If not, don't buy. I haven't seen enough of Adam to make a judgement on him. I have seen Johnson play adequately well at left back but it's not his true position. I think upgrading at leftback would be nice. I think buying a central mid would be nice. Is Adam that central mid? I can't judge.

Thanks for reading that ramble. I'll go back to my drink.

Thankfully ive just read that we don't want to be in a bidding war and will be buying some unheard of Korean from Celtic instead.... marvellous.
