C'MON IRELAND!! (slightly NSFW due to crunters)

Roy Keane:

YOU’LL never beat the Irish?

It’s time for that song to be put away because, at the moment, everyone is beating them.

I’m sick of this ‘win, lose, we’re on the booze’ mentality. It has to change.

People seem to have misunderstood me. I’ve no problem with fans singing.

It’s great that they back the team during and before games — but should they really stay on long after the final whistle cheering?

There’s a danger that the players think that what has happened on the pitch is acceptable, when it’s not.

When I got in the squad as a youngster there were Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal players. Where are they now?

I can’t think of one player who has had a good season at club level.

I got in trouble for saying in an interview that some of my team-mates were at the clubs they were at for a reason but it was true... and it’s the same now.

Where is their ambition? Where is their hunger and drive to achieve something?

A couple of years ago Kevin Doyle was linked to Arsenal. Now he’s heading back to the Championship.

Stephen Hunt has been relegated three times in five years.

Their club form is poor and no player has come out of the two games with any credit. Not one.

That’s why there should be 11 changes against Italy tomorrow. At every finals Ireland have been in, there has been a moment to savour.

Ray Houghton’s winners against England in 1988 and Italy in ’94.

Packie Bonner’s penalty save from Daniel Timofte in ’90 and Robbie Keane’s equalisers against Germany and Spain in 2002.

What will the fans have to look back on from this tournament? Sean St Ledger’s goal against Croatia? That’s how bad it has been.

It’s an excuse to say we are a small country. Croatia don’t have a much bigger population than us.

Spain’s fourth goal on Thursday had nothing to do with them being world champions. It was down to not picking up at a corner.

I hear Keith Andrews talking about playing for pride against Italy. That should be a given.

We’re out so we may as well try and use tomorrow to help the next campaign and look at other players. The problem with Ireland is that people are being picked no matter how they have played and that’s a disease in any team.

The likes of Keane, Shay Given, Richard Dunne, John O’Shea and Damien Duff are picked every game as they have a big reputation.

A reputation for what? They hadn’t qualified for anything in 10 years.

They love having a dig back when I say something but I tell you now, I’ll be ready if they do because players have to be accountable for how the team did.

There was a campaign to get James McClean into the side but there shouldn’t have to be. He was playing well in the Prem and he deserved a chance.

Shane Long is a Prem player who got goals and yet he’s behind Keane who is in the MLS, Doyle who is set for the Championship, Simon Cox who couldn’t get a game for Long’s club West Brom and Jon Walters.

Let’s have a look at other players who are in the squad tomorrow.

I’m not buying the argument that they are too inexperienced. Where did experience get us?

I’m trying to be constructive but the manager and the players all have to be accountable. It’s no good shrugging our shoulders and having a sing-song.

All the stuff about Keane being a winner and a complex character etc.... its not that its rather that he actually is a sociopath. So as a proud Irishman he suggests that eleven new players up against Italy is the way forward and whats more that the current players should be ashamed to receive heartfelt genuine support. What a strange and lonely figure he will become if he makes it to his dotage.

I hated him at United, lost all respect for him as a player when he walked out in 2002 but this just makes you see him for the selfish self reverential cunt he is.

this is the same guy who called the manc fan "prawn sandwich brigade" for not being vocal enough. Same gut who went home to walk his dog instead of representing his country in Japan.

Indeed. You would have to be mad not to recognise that Keane was a world class player but as a sportsman he was shallow and cowardly, a victim of his own ego. I think its scandalous that people should still have his opinion inflicted upon them, as if it wasnt a bad enough week on the pitch. Just remember this is the cunt whose pride came before his team success and his compatriots happiness, in fact that cunt was man enough to end another mans career for calling him on a nasty deliberate challenge that backfired ... that says it all to me ... a nasty bitter little man

Ambition counts for fuck all, when you don't have the players. Our team is made up of Championship players, and a few Premiership substitutes. You can have all the ambition in the world, but if you don't have the quality, then you can't do much about it.

Yeah, but why blame it on the fans? Surely getting behind your team when things aren't going well can only be a good thing?

He's got some fair points, even if he is a crank. Some players need to be blooded tomorrow.

What use would that be? I think the players that got us there should be given the chance to prove that they aren't as bad as has been shown. There's plenty of times for young players to get game time in the next qualifiers.

Yeah, but why blame it on the fans? Surely getting behind your team when things aren't going well can only be a good thing?

He didn't say that though, he said they were going overboard staying behind chanting, etc. Which is true. It's great they got there, and no they don't have the players, but that's kind of his point, there's a real lack of quality through a lack of ambition and if they are to push on, it's a mentality that would have to change from top to bottom. I don't think there's much wrong with what he says. He might be fairly cutting and a bit of a killjoy (his comments about Chamberlain and Hart playing water volleyball were a bit miserly), but he by and large tells it like it is. People don't like that, fair enough, sometimes the truth hurts.

It's no surprise he failed as a manager though, he does cut the figure of a bit of a loaner lacking any kind of empathy.

So he's saying that teams perform better if fans don't support no matter how the team play, and are critical of the teams performance in the stadium?

Keane can go fuck himself. He may have a point to an extent, but he has to work on his timing and delivery.

Was he saying that though? He wasn't saying they shouldn't support, he was saying they shouldn't be making the players feel like it's a big piss up either way. I agree anyway, he's a bit of a loathsome character who lacks any true understanding of spirit in the game.

Ok then. So he's saying the fans shouldn't be allowed to enjoy themselves. He's still a prick.

Personally, I thought the fans were an absolute credit to us. They went over to support their country and enjoy themselves. They were the talk of Europe over their behaviour and loyalty toward their country. If you ask me, it's just sour grapes. He's a fucking miserable old twat. He knows he's fucked up in the past on many occasions but he's not man enough to admit it. An absolute bellend.

The fans haven't had a tournament to go to in 10 years, haven't had much to celebrate, and spent a fortune to get there. Now he's telling them not to enjoy themselves? He is a cunt.

If anything, I think the players felt even worse about their performance after seeing the fans to be honest.

As I think I said before, I have two brothers over at the games. They were all drinking in some square, and a fight broke out in the middle of the square. Everyone in all the pubs starting booing and heckling them, after a while the two fighting got embarrassed, stopped fighting and shook hands.

The behaviour of the Irish fans is nothing but good for the country, Keane is the embarrassment.

I must admit I felt there was a kernel of truth to what Keane said, but he has zero subtlety when he says such things and no apparent ability to put things in any kind of perspective.

I hate the fact that some people are trying to vindicate what he's been saying regarding the fans. Not just on here but some of the folk I know as well. Simple fact is that win lose or draw all of those fans in Poland would have been behind the team. In harsh economic times between 40 to 50 thousand fans have traveled and have given some of the other teams fans great moments. As liverpool fans we should know better. 3 nil down at half time and it was the sound of the fans still singing in Istanbul when everything seemed done and dusted that the players and us still quote to this day. Its easy to criticise the Irish tactics because the players simply werent good enough and Trap has made some tactical howlers and strange substitutions. To criticise the fans mentality is a joke because even if we were as good as spain and actual contenders for the tournament our fans would react no differently to being knocked out. What you see is what you get with the Irish fans. Keane is and always will be a miserable cunt who has a massive chip on his shoulder. He's probably never even tasted a prawn, never mind a prawn sandwich, the cunt!

This sums him up perfectly. He's not a fool, though he behaves like one, and there's quite often a core of good sense in what he says. The difficulty is that he has the social and communication skills of a chimp.

What did he say? What did he say?

He paid tribute to him as a great player and said that he was a pleasure to work with on the book and that his family were lovely, but that he'd turned into a "pain in the arse".

He said he had issues with players like Given, Keane, Duff and he stuck the boot in at any opportunity and that he was wrong to do so.

Reckoned he was "attention-seeking" and should remember that everything he has comes from the pockets of fans.

Did he really say that? Normally that twat Dunphy is Keane's no 1 fan.

He does my head in and looks like the goblin from Labyrinth.

Haha..yeah he really said all that. The funniest thing was him recalling a conversation Keane had with Keys in the past when Keane said that being a football analyst would be like sitting in a dentists chair. And also that he was just trying to be controversial in order to put himself in the shop window because he's ready to go back into management.

Isn't Keane just being cruel to be kind?

In his sledgehammer style I just think he was saying the 'going over for the craic/we're a small country so zero expectation' mindset of the fans transmits itself to the players and staff. I've no idea if that's true but it's the vibe I was picking up from him. It must have hit home as even Trapattoni has had a dig back.

It's the logical Keane follow up to his episode as a player when he quit at what he saw as unprofessional preparation, no?

Keane just wants a more determined, ambitious outlook but can't express it without annoying his compatriots.

Dunphy also said something along the lines of, Keane, being from Cork, had a chip on his shoulder.
