Cody De Facto

Most of our forwards do not receive the ball in space, and most of them can´t do anything explosive without space.

The first part is partially just the nature of things, and partially that we are fucking cowardly and slow to release the ball because when we fucked up that pass in the first third of this season we were immediately destroyed.

The second part is that our wingers aren´t fast enough to exploit space, and aren´t technically gifted enough on the dribble to make do with less space.

I don´t think Gakpo is any worse then, than any other year. But he´ll look worse. Like many players.

It´s also though, that that isn´t good enough. Try to find a way to impact the game anyway and we´ll get some confidence. Don´t be a poorly performing little robot. That is where Gakpo simply doesn´t show initiative.

Salah has annoyed the shit out of me this season, but there is a way where you can see he´s trying to just do shit, he´s just endlessly failing and then shrugging his shoulders when everyone inevitably has to turn and sprint toward our goal. Gakpo is the opposite. What an interesting variety of mediocrity.

I could never knock a player who tries to make something happen always. It's that willingness to make an impact that differentiates a player. Cody and Salah falls into that space, at least for me.

They might try and fail 9 out of 10 times but they just need to succeed once and we will have a goal. That is anytime better than a player who is neat and tidy but passes sideways, backwards, not willing to take risks, hides in the background etc.

We have too many players who don't contribute on the attacking end and when Salah / Cody drops off, they don't step up. I'm seeing some players starting to step up; namely Ekitike, Szobo, Frimpong, Wirtz, Kerkez so long may it continue.

Gakpo is scoring about one every three games(every 273 mins), this season and hitting his xG. He's doing ok from a shooting perspective. He was much better last season, but I think this one is more his norm.

If Bayern come calling would you do a full reset of the left attacker spot?

Whilst I'm not his biggest fan, he a good squad player. Good physically, doesn't get injured, scores goals and broadly you know what you're gonna get with him so it doesn't matter if he starts or comes on as a sub. All good qualities.

That said, the profile of our attack / squad is in need of surgery and perhaps he is a necessary sacrifice, particularly if he is someone that wants to be starting every week.

I saw a clip of Diaz busting his ass to keep possession and fight for a throw-in the other day and it just made me miss him. He had the dog in him, similar to Suarez. We need more of that in the team.

Not making this as a comparison to Cody though, I do kinda like the fact that he will look like he's walking and he's casually putting down the fastest speed on the pitch.

The reason hes hitting his xG is that there's fuck all chance of scoring from his now famous trademark. And lo and behold, he doesn't. QED.

I (sort of) like Cody. Liked him last year. I think i want him to stay. But his complete refusal to either pass to Kerkez or take his man on down the wing has decimated his effectiveness.

A bit like Salah, this 4,2,2,2 formation could see us start to see the best of him again, if he will use Milos. Big if mind, on this season's evidence.

He's scoring one in three though, which is not great, but not nothing. Scoring one in three, from that many minutes, and hitting your xG suggests he's doing "ok". One in 2 is great for a winger, which is where he was last year.

I too think we could get more from him if we shift things slightly, and our new players continue to improve around him. I'm not sure he's the right long term option to be starting so many games, but he's definitely a good squad option, and does pop up with goals.

Absolutely a squaddy but he’s been used as a replacement for Diaz who was a replacement for Mane…

Diaz played most of his last season for us up front, it's never exact like for like, but Ekitike is the replacement for him. Gakpo was mostly on the left wing last year as well as this, and he did pretty well last year.

Diaz and Gakpo were a good and well balanced combo for the left wing spot, as many of us were saying last year. Obviously, they're not Mane individually, but I thought the pair of them chipping in as well as being able to cover the central position was a good replacement

I thought Ekitike was more of a replacement for Nunez and Isak for Jota, if we're talking like for like
