Yep, he looks destined for us. Same with Adam and Downing.

Yep, let's hope Barca or United don't try and pinch them.

It'd be pretty strange if he went to Sunderland given how much hype he's had.

Unless Bruce is getting him ready to pass on to Ferguson in a few years.

You just read my mind.

Tomorrow's papers report than Wickham wants the move to Liverpool over Sunderland even if he'll play less(for a season at least).

Really hope we get this deal tied up.

Blues boss Paul Jewell issued a hands off warning to Premier League clubs regarding his teenage sensation yesterday.

The 18-year-old striker – currently on international duty with the England Under-21s at the European Championships in Denmark – has been linked heavily with Liverpool and Sunderland this summer, with transfer bids anywhere between £5million and £10m being reported.

Speculation of a Portman Road exit therefore reached fever pitch over the weekend after Jewell signed striker Michael Chopra from Cardiff City for a fee believed to be around £1.5m.

The experienced Liverpudlian insists he plans on not only keeping Wickham, but also adding another hitman to a forward line which also has Jason Scotland and Tamas Priskin.

“We’ve had no offers for any of our players and that includes Connor,” said Jewell, who admitted the thought of Chopra and Wickham playing in the same team excited him.

If Connor Wickham wanted to leave and the right offer came in then we’d have to consider it. However, Connor’s never given me any indication he wants to leave so our backs are by no means against the wall.

“We don’t want to sell him and the good thing is I’m not in a position where I have to sell anyone
. If we get a bid for anybody, no matter how good it is, it will have to suit us.”

Sunderland have made an offer thought to be in the region of £8m for Ipswich's highly rated striker Connor Wickham, the BBC understands.

The 18-year-old has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs, including Tottenham and Liverpool.

Wickham was part of England's Under-21 squad for the European Championship in Denmark.

Sunderlands bid will force our hand, either we up our offer and then he chooses us or we let him go, you cant really haggle the fee when another club are already offering more money

From todays Echo:

Liverpool FC step up pursuit of £10m-rated Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham

LIVERPOOL are set to step up their pursuit of Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham in the face of competition from Sunderland.

The Reds are keen to secure the services of the highly-rated 18-year-old, who is believed to have his heart set on a move to Anfield.

Sunderland are reported to have offered the Championship outfit about £8million for Wickham but Liverpool remains the 6ft 3ins frontman’s most likely destination.

Director of football Damien Comolli watched the England Under 21s international in action at Portman Road on a number of occasions last season and was impressed.

Liverpool are looking to boost their strikeforce and secure back-up for Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, as David Ngog is expected to leave Anfield this summer.

Wickham could cost up to £10million but the teenager fits into the philosophy of owners Fenway Sports Group to invest in exiting young British talent.

Hereford-born Wickham, who grew up as a Liverpool fan, became the youngest player in Ipswich’s history when he made his debut at 16 against Doncaster in 2009.

Since then he has scored 15 goals in 37 starts and has made a further 35 substitute appearances. He was voted the Championship’s top young player last season.

At 10m he has to come in and playa fairly significant role immediately, surely ?

I'd crac him on the bench but at this juncture id not be overly happy with placing too
Much reaponsilbity on the lad.

Not really. Walcott didn't when he first went tp Arsenal.

Not 100% sold on this young lad. He lacks that one aspect of his play that we need most and that can cover a deficit in other areas ... pace.

If we get him I'm obviously praying I'm wrong 8)

Yeah Alan Shearer and Van Nistelrooy are perfect examples of a striker needing pace to shit goals in this league. :🙂

Havent seen him much... But this might be money well spent. He should be able to bypass Ngog in the pecking order, and have a good sell on value later if he cant make it all the way.

Clever. :🙂

However they are 2 in a million. Maybe if we spunk 10M on every young lad with a rep we'll find another after ... oh maybe 50 attempts ?

Besides which we already have a slow, big, striker and our strikeforce is probably the slowest in the league. We need a couple of speedsters.

I have to say that I'm excited about Wickham but my excitement is at the same level as Ngog.
I don't really see how he differs from Ngog.

Owen scored 18 goals in his first real season in the premier league. Wickham has scored 7 or is it 9 in the championship.

Wickham looks like a serious prospect.

But other than we're paying more, does anybody else get the feeling we've become like Martin O'Neill's Villa. Lot's of overpriced British players please.

robbie keane isn't british. And darren bent was worth that

villa just spent 24 on him.

my bad regarding Keane.
£24 Million got us Torres.
[/quote]

an unproven striker with an average scoring ability compared to someone who had been the top british scorer for the years previous

Ive said it before and i'll say it again, at the time i wanted us to get bent

I wouldn't say that Torres was unproven. I mean he was one of the top rated strikers in Spain. But sure he was unproven in the premiership. We could say the same about someone like Villa.

Torres was highly rated, but he never showed great ability in spain. Villa (since he was at gijon) was a goal scoring machine. Villa moved to valencia for 9m. Bargains can be had but i'm sure if we compare goal scoring between villa and Torres at similar ages villa will batter Torres.

Bargains can be had and yes, villa would have been a steal at the time, but bent was still a safer, cheaper option than torres at the time
