Coutinho gone. 142m

Not really worth contemplating at the moment.

I seriously hope there is a plan in place for it already though. Itd be nice not to have our thumbs in our asses for a change.

I doubt those cheapskates will offer the same kind of fee in the winter with Coutinho being cup-tied, so summer will be when it happens.
I can't think of a single player that's available that's comparable in skills and talent. So we may have a bit of an issue in replacing him. Hope we find a gem.

I think we'll be fine whether he is staying or going. When he goes, I hope we replace him with someone like Pulisic. But unlike the article, I don't think this is a foregone conclusion at all – I simply think no decision has been made by either Barcelona, Coutinho or Liverpool and all the parties are sensibly keeping the options open. If this whole idea of a "fab four" keeps getting bigger and bigger (as it will if we're successful), this could be a good argument for Coutinho to stay and become the heart of this brand rather than give it up to be in Messi's or Neymar's supporting cast. At this point nobody knows.

When Coutinho has the ball, he takes at least two players with him. He's not just capable of gliding past them, but also puts a quality pass in to an attacker who then has space to start off a move. I can't see too many players capable of doing that. Never seen Pulisic properly. Is he a similar player?

Not really, he's more like a young Marco Reus – runs directly at defenders, excellent aggression, close control and change of direction. I think he's a more natural fit for Klopp's game than Phil, but he's much younger, of course.

Give me Coutinho over Pulisic any day of the week. Don't see how Pulisic is more of a natural fit. When you have talent like Coutinho you are a natural fit in ANY system.

Only player ive seen that could replace Coutinho is Isco and we've no chance of getting him. Selling him in January would be stupid. Sell him after he's had a good world cup and we will get a lot bigger fee. But yeah he will definitely be sold.

I'm coming around to the idea that we just won't sell him.
Oh we will.

IMO klopp thinks he is a very very talented player, certainly our best technical player, but he is no longer our most important player, & not our most influential player either.

I think it's far more important we keep Mane & Salah at the club, & I'd bet Klopp thinks the same way (although he for damn sure thinks Firmino is our most important player).

Getting a huge fee for Coutinho would go a long way to bolstering the rest of the side & keeping players happy.

Fucking Right. Good game last night but needs to do it more against better opposition. With the money we may get for him we could get 3 additions to our team to make us COMPLETE !!!

He's gone and hopefully our scouts find a decent replacement. He's good but he's never been as good as Suarez or Salah, I'd rather we spent the money on someone who can organise the defence.

I would rather we keep him as I still don't, despite the purchases of Mane and Salah, trust the club to reinvest the money so as to bring about a net improvement. If we were to get Van Dijk, Oblak and <enter top midfielder here>, then sure. But I'm skeptical.

That said I still think he's off in the summer. Selling in January would be ridiculous though.I

I really can't understand the apathy towards him by some. He's a brilliant player and losing him will be a huge blow to this team. And from a pure entertainment point of view, he's great to watch.

Hopefully we get a massive sum of money (and don't have to ensure sniggering in the media about how he was bought for less than the advertised amount a la Suarez) and get a worthwhile replacement. I've been through too many Carrolls and Bentekes to put my faith in that though.

I believed in the summer and still believe so now that he's really entitled to leave.

Just like Suarez and Alonso, he's never downed tools, never gave anything other than 100% for this club and always respected the club.

He's too good to play with Mignolet and Lovren, he deserves trophies in his career and right now he will definitely not win any in here.

When I was younger I was mad at Suarez and sad when Alonso left, but I totally understand them now, they deserved to win trophies.

Coutinho is very good but I actually think sometimes that Klopp feels hamstrung by him. He has spent the last two years getting a system that plays to Coutinho's strengths mainly because on of Coutinho weaknesses is that he is limited defensively. Keita solves that problem big time!

Heres how I see it.

Keita (Replaces Coutinho)
Goretzka (Plays in the Gini/Can role)
Stephen N'Zonzi or similar DM plays as the screen.

We can get Goretzka on a free and the use the Coutinho money on a quality DM and a CB. People are saying that Keita is going to be the screen player but that would be a massive waste of his talent.

Heres the big problem with Coutihno that Klopp can resolve by playing Keita. Klopp likes to press with his attackers this is something Coutinho cant do as well. His pressing ability is so and so, and not only that whenever you play Coutinho you need one or two players around him to do the heavy lifting. This is why against Spartak we had Gini and Can doing the dirty work.

However, if you put Keita in you don't need to have babysitters for him, he is a player that will contribute to the forward press and helps out with regard to defensive work. We have had a reputation as having a soft centre sometimes but adding Keita (for Coutinho) and then having the likes of Stephen N'Zonizi or similar means that we can finally have a midfield that has aggression and skill.

Keita scored a great solo goal that Coutinho would have been proud of on Wednesday so I am more than happy to see Keita replace him.

The other option is to go for Lemar but then I feel we would pretty much need to spend a large amount of the Coutinho money to secure Lemar. Trusting in Keita to replace Couts is the key.

@mwake - feel exactly the same way about Coutninho - a player to good to leave on the bench but someone who requires support to ensure the team does not leak goals. I also firmly believe that Klopp is hamstrung by him somewhat - especially in the Premier League - I don't think Coutinho has the necessary aggression - that is why I think he is inconsistent from game to game.

You lose that entitlement when you sign a 5 year contract.
His ‘injury’ during the transfer window, when the season had already started, is downing tools.
So fuck what he personally wants, we dictate what happens.

I hope we don't sell him. Let him throw up a mighty stink, doesn't matter. Add on a good defender, Keita, and a good goalkeeper to his team and we can win stuff.

Please by all means merge it.

With an impressive display last night talk immediately turns to Barca and a £130m transfer. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football...ho-has-opened-door-leaving-liverpool-january/

It's clear he is going, with Kieta coming next season, do we buy a replacement in Jan or hold off till summer

If he keeps playing this well then it is likely that Barca will come knocking again but it will not be until summer. he would be unable to play for them in the CL this season anyway... and we look better with him and we still need the fucker...

As for us needing to "sell", he still has a long contract to go with us and I see no reason at all why we shouldn't just pilfer the fuck out of their Catalan wallets... assuming we cant win No.6 and hence convince him that staying here can also provide him with glory...

Go full in for Goretzka and the best deep lying playmaker we can find. Our 3 man midfield suddenly looks great.

Easier said than done.

Keeping him would still be option 1 by miles and miles

Not to mention Xabi won big Ears and the FA Cup in 2 years ... he only left because he was pushed out.

I don't see Keita coming in & playing where Coutinho does.

If that were the case there would be no sense in us wanting both of them last summer, & the only three players we were solidly linked to were those two plus VVD.

I think Keita will be playing in the centre, hopefully as a replacement for Henderson, but more likely for Can.

Lemar or another proper AM will be replacing Coutinho.

It's a waste of keitas ability if he replaces Henderson. He's a boss going forward. If it's not coutinho, it's Gini.

He'll replace the role Wijnaldum often plays, aka running into the box from deep, he'll get to attack loads and in very dangerous positions as a result, the difference being he'll be immensely more talented than Gini when doing it.

Edit, I see that's exactly what you suggested at that end of your post too, not sure how I missed that, but I did.

If PC were to go, could Firmino play the number 10 role which will allow us to get a out-and-out striker?

He was pushed out? How? The season before was average and Rafa was well within his rights and the season after his form did pick up.
Not the fact he was pining for the Real move and couldn't handle the 5% tax rise? Let's try not to rewrite history, Xabi wanted out and got out when we needed him the most.
