SA not in great form right now ... Might be best time to face us.

those Indian tracks were pretty different to what you'll have in SA though. I haven't seen balls turn so much on a first day as it did in that last test match until Englands game last night in Sharjah where the ball was litterally turning square! Just when your bowling was looking a bit weaker that Rabada turns up !! He looks very tasty indeed!

Rabada looks very very talented ... Nice to see a young pace bowler look so promising ... 🙂

I see that both Rabada and Steyn are not playing in the final test against India. Maybe they are being saved for England.

Steyn is defo on the 'down curve' of his career - he's having a rough recent spell. Rest should do him well.

Rabada - disappointing. Let's get him as much experience as he'll be our #1 guy in 3-4 years imo.

SA squad for the first two tests:

Wow - De Villiers keeping ! thank you very much !! A lot of pressure on him as Amla apart there is not much great batting there. And no Tahir, I guess that's down to the pitches they will prepare. Really looking forward to this series, it could be quite close if our middle order turns up!

I think that SA may go with 4 quick and 1 spin.
I would take a guess at:
Dean Elgar
Stiaan van Zyl
Hashim Amla
Faf du Plessis
AB de Villiers
JP Duminy
Kagiso Rabada
Dane Piedt
Kyle Abbott
Dale Steyn
Morne Morkel

If the batting struggles above AB, then Bavuma or Rossouw will be given a chance.
Also, they obviously expect Philander back after the first two tests. They could do with his batting to try to stretch the middle order.
Being that Durban is so swing friendly, I would be surprised if they dropped one seamer for an extra batsman. We'll see....
Also, I suppose that there is an outside chance that a high order batsman does so well in the 2 SA Invitation XI games, that they are considered for a test berth.

Don't underestimate Faf or Elgar, both very very capable batsmen

Unfortunately, SA's India form is carrying over to SA (as expected).

I do wonder the team's confidence is shot ... Faf has been terrible the last 10 innings, Amla - nothing special etc.

Well I think you are doing a bit of a disservice to a very good disciplined bowling performance from England, didn't give a lot away. It could have been a lot worse if the ump had given Elgar out when he was 50 or so, and AB had been correctly given for that catch.

Check out Faf's last 10 innings ... or Amla's recent struggles ... even AB's ... I think it's more the players and their confidence than England.

England are currently 58/2 with both Compton and Root already dropped once ... Could have been even more interesting!

142/3 now mate - I've never seen such a poor SA team, or at least one so low on confidence.

Well I would discount the last series in India completely.when they were playing on ridiculous pitches! We are establishing a good attack and bowled very very well in the conditions. Big big mistake to give AB the gloves. Even though it is England I cannot see how SA will get out of this with Steyn seemingly injured so long as we can get through the new ball.

I'd be AMAZED if we pull out a draw - AMAZED.

The team lacks a proper leader - AB is great, but he's not a leader like Smith ... Maybe I'm being down - it's been a rough year for almost all the sports teams I follow, but it's been a fun run as the best team, and I think we just need to give the young talent a chance to build the next top SA team.

SA are already up against it. If they lose Steyn, that would be a massive loss!!
Faf is completely at sea - that need to replace him with Rossouw.

Amla stats from the 2012 tour of England - can you believe that it is the same player!

Thought we had a chance until Faf's last over dismissal ... Once you get AB out, that is test one wrapped up.

All players go through dips in form ... It's frustrating because he's so good but it's odd that it has hit so many players at the same time give or take.

I like Roussouw - but if anything, he should replace Duminy (if we're not going to let him bowl) as he's been even worse than Faf (but skin color may be a problem in the decision making process)

So whats the chance of an amazing rearguard and draw do you safas reckon? I don't think England have it in the bag at all, the pitch is pretty slow and dead and this ball is not reversing. The new ball will be due shortly after lunch which must be negotiated but Faf and AB weren't in much trouble up to that ball from Finn.
I thought the commentators here are being a bit harsh on Bairstow's missed stumping. I have watched it several times and the ball turned massively- and bounced too, not many keepers would have snaffled that with the ball flight hidden behind the batsman.

Well I wasn't expecting that! Not a lot of fight there from SA. De Koch looks as if he is going to keep in the next match which will strengthens the batting and keeping! Chris Morris added to the squad. I guess he would replace the spinner.

It was a lovely thing to behold. I'm a massive fan of Finn - He has always been a little expensive but pretty much guarantees wickets. It looks like in this match he seems to have more control. Less said about SA the better - They were bloody awful!

Yup great for him to comeback so well against the proteas who nearly ruined him with all that bail knocking off nonsense. Really glad that Bairstow took that sharp stumping after the stick he got yesterday, and can't wait for Bob Willis to comment on it after he said he was like a performing seal flapping about last night. Very harsh, that ball turned MILES, Alan Knott would have struggled with that!
