He needs to learn to release the ball quicker. Otherwise yeah, I agree
It's always been an achilles heel, holding onto it too long. But that's a major factor in his improved play for me. He's much quicker and more incisive with his passing.

he’s a bit weird in that when a few things come off for him he starts to get cocky and he either looks great and it’s infectious or it doesn’t work and he seems a bit wasteful / silly.

To be fair to Jones, I actually called something for once. When watching the Arsenal game this season, I said we were crying out for Jones to try and break the lines and progress the ball. From what I can remember, he came on and changed the game, and we even got the Szoboszlai free kick from him being more forward thinking.
yea it felt like there was a lot of conservative play, a bit of hiding, and some hot potato going on. he’s the opposite of that.
He reminds me of Peter Beardsley in the way he dribbles but he can't do is the incisive through ball, the clever 1-2s (often enough). He holds on to the ball too long, and then fumbles over it. He is where he is, on the bench. We have been here before when people start signing is accolades after two good performances but it never lasts, as soon enough he will put in a mediocre performance across a string of games
The funny thing is, Jones is actually doing what Wirtz is supposed to be doing for us - keeping possession, probing and finding line-breaking passes and dribbles - but he is doing it better and he’s more physically robust. I like Wirtz, but we would have been better off giving a lot of his minutes to Curtis this season.

He's always been comfortable under pressure but his passes are often short or sideways. In that regards of course he is going to have a good passing rate.
But he holds onto the ball for too long and he contributes little in terms of forward passes. That hadn't changed at all. He is a midfield who isn't too defensive and isn't too attacking. He is just there to run around abit and move the ball around. We might as well have Jordan Henderson back because he might still be better than Cujo at such tasks.

That tendency to hold onto the ball arises mainly when he is carrying it forward. When he broadly holds his position and looks for a pass based on the movement of his team mates, he doesn't seem to me to be more guilty of hoarding the ball than anyone else. And all of that is, I think, because he is looking for a "safe" pass, by which I don't necessarily mean one that is unadventurous, more that it is a high likelihood of completion (hence his high pass completion stats). In short, he is a player that likes the team to keep possession.
As far as his overall role is concerned, I see him as a quality squad player. I don't ever see him becoming a first choice player, but I'm also not foaming at the mouth every time he starts. He may not set the world alight but he rarely has a stinker and lets us down. Kind of a midfield version of Steve Finnan, which is no bad thing.
