Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish wants to beat Chelsea to the signing of Wigan star James McCarthy – the one who got away from Anfield.

Dalglish is determined to land Glasgow-born Ireland starlet McCarthy as part of a major summer overhaul.

And the legendary manager thinks that he can persuade McCarthy to pick Merseyside ahead of London for his next move, which looks increasingly likecoming at the end of the season.

Chelsea wanted to land McCarthy in January and are still in the chase for him – although the exit of director of football Frank Arnesen leaves a question mark over their desperation for him.

Now Dalglish, poised to get the Liverpool job full-time, has decided to home in on McCarthy who was set to sign for former boss Rafa Benitez as a kid but opted to stay with Hamilton Accies.

McCarthy has already been to Liverpool’s HQ and played in a training game – when he was just 16 – and Benitez was keen to take him
only for the top prospect to decide that first-team football with Hamilton was better.

Dalglish does not want to miss out on McCarthy again and thinks he would be ideal for a new-look squad that would also include fellow Scot Charlie Adam from Blackpool. McCarthy signed for Wigan and has proved himself to be one of the best young all-round midfielders in the top flight. Chelsea are willing to pay up to £7million for him.

Liverpool will match and possibly better that if Dalglish gets the money to invest.

And he hopes the quiet lad will prefer to stay in the area rather than be drawn to the capital.

McCarthy has forged close friendships with some of the Latics team and may be happier to remain in the north west, which is also closer to his tight-knit family home in Glasgow.

No offence Binny but it must be frustrating to post transfer news here, since every player in world from the Azerbadjani league to the Zimbabwean league are linked with us.

Would be extremely excited about this, if we are going to buy the players we are being linked with a version of the 4-3-3

I like McCarthy, but he's not going to answer any of our pressing concerns.

I'd still gladly swap him for Lucas or Poulsen though.

£7mil? Fucking yes please. He's going to be worth a lot more than in a few years. I agree we have more pressing positions to fill, Squiggs, but getting guys of McCarthy's promise is always good.

I think we should be listening to you this summer by signing McCarthy and Martinez, I think we'd be sorted in midfield with Gerrard/Meireles/McCarthy/Martinez/Lucas/Spearing. Even though if Martinez has moved on from being a more defensive playmaking midfielder to being an all around/box to box midfielder then we may need a true defensive midfielder, of which the best young ones seem to be french.

Not tranny enough for you Modo?

I'd love McCarthy here - he's a cracking young player.

Also linked with Albrighton today - another young player I really rate.

Albrighton would also be a fantastic buy.

Albrighton has the same love of the game as Dirk Kuyt and has boundless energy.

Looks a prospect alright.

Yes, and a good one. IMHO when it comes to Villa youngsters Bannan is probably a better all-round footballer, but he tends to switch between CM and the wide positions and I can see the point of going for a specialist.

James McCarthy emerged from his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland delighted to have finally ended the debate over his allegiance.

The 20-year-old Wigan midfielder was introduced as an 87th-minute replacement for skipper Robbie Keane in last night's 2-1 Euro 2012 qualifier victory over Macedonia to formally confirm himself as an Ireland international and end Scotland's hopes of persuading him to change his mind.

Glasgow-born McCarthy has spent the last few weeks at the centre of a debate over whether or not his mind was firmly made up following his withdrawal from Giovanni Trapattoni's squad for last month's Carling Nations Cup clash with Wales.

Club boss Roberto Martinez further muddied the waters last week when he suggested that there could yet be room for manoeuvre, although the player was quick on his arrival in Dublin to insist that the country of his heritage rather than that of his birth had won out.

He was greeted by loud cheers by the crowd at the Aviva Stadium when he emerged from the dug-out to play a cameo role in a tense conclusion to a hard-fought match, and he was thrilled to have settled the issue once and for all.

McCarthy said: "I'm delighted to make my debut. The fans were great with me. There was nothing in the stories that came about.

"Hopefully I can get many more caps.

"It's been different class. The boys have made me really welcome. It's just great to be amongst it and get some game-time under my belt."

Former Celtic winger Aiden McGeady, who was also born in Glasgow, is well-placed to understand the pressures on McCarthy and was pleased to see him finally pull on a green shirt.

He said: "I was talking to him in the dressing room and he just said he was delighted that he came on and that's it put to bed now.

"He was getting phone calls from all sorts of people asking if he was going back to Scotland, but he said it was never in doubt and he was never going to do that.

"Now it's sorted."

Keane too was glad to have one of the country's most exciting emerging talents now firmly within the fold.

He said: "He's delighted more than anyone, to be honest with you, he's delighted just to get it out of the way.

"I was speaking to him before the game and he was desperate just to stop people talking about it.

"He's an Irish player now - there was never any question about it anyway because he always wanted to be. It was other people in the background slowing things up.

"But he is happy now because he was desperate to play for us."

Binny. You need to get involved in expert eleven. You'd stride over us like a colossus!
