As I said elsewhere, they may as well just choose their best prospect - which is surely Vigouroux - and either play him non-stop in the reserves or send him out on loan - a serious, carefully chosen, constantly monitored loan - and let him know that he'll get a chance to step up as number 2 if he shows enough promise. As it is, it's just more aimless indulgence of players in a position for which there seems no chance of progression at the club.

I'm convinced these cunts are signed so we have sufficient numbers to make games at training work.

I remember a few years back at some club I played for we sold our 2nd choice keeper to some other outfit, and training became a farce afterwards. You couldn't do match simulation cos we only had one keeper.

Yeah they are not exactly over the moon at the prospect of Ward signing.

Mind you when your current goalkeeper's nickname is " Clangers".........

Good move. It's make or break for Ward. In the last couple of years he's struck me as ludicrously pleased with himself for someone who still hasn't really looked more than merely adequate. Hopefully this belated trip to the real world will show us what he's really made of. Vigouroux and Fulton strike me as way hungrier and more promising.

It's interesting that we signed him to a new contract before sending him out on loan, as usually, he'd have just been released. This suggests that the club thinks there's value in holding on to him, perhaps as a backup in the longer term, or more likely, just fancy that we could sell him for a little more than the 100K he cost us.

The one thing I remember about him is the pre-season game last season against Brondby (I think). Dean Saunders was doing the co-commentary for that game, and was very complimentary of Ward, whom he had managed at Wrexham. Right on cue, Ward fucks up to embarrass him (some incident involving a miskick or dawdling with the ball inviting pressure or some other scare that our keepers usually put us through).

A Jocko mate of mine is a big Dons fan (runs a fan page of theirs on Facebook). He tells me a majority of them are looking forward to Ward playing for Aberdeen as they reckon he's badly needed, their two main current options being too old and distinctly average respectively. They've got a pre-season friendly coming up shortly, then they're straight into Europa League qualifiers and it's thought Ward is likely to play in all or most of those games. Sink or swim, I guess.

Appaz Ward just played the second half of a pre-season friendly. My mate was impressed with his confidence and said he played the ball out nicely too, rather than just hoofing it all the time. On that admittedly limited evidence he reckons Ward is in with a shout of becoming first choice straight away.

[article=http://www.afc.co.uk/news/6389.php?#.VZKwwvmqqko]Danny Ward played 45 minutes against St Johnstone on Sunday and the Liverpool keeper did very well considering he only met all his new team mates on Friday. He looks like being another excellent signing by Derek McInnes.

Danny spoke to RedTV and started by telling us how the move came about. "I first heard about the interest from Aberdeen when I was on holiday and my agent phoned me. I then only found out the deal had actually gone through a couple of days before arriving in Scotland. I had to tie up a few loose ends before travelling north and then was straight into a double session before being involved in the game on Sunday.

"As I was away with the Wales squad I did not get much of a break during the summer but I don't mind. That is football.

"I had to very quickly get to know all the boys names. Gordon Marshall was also in a very similar situation as his first day at the club was also on Friday. I am looking forward to working with him and as well as the other keepers.

"Living in Liverpool Ash (Taylor) was just over the water. I know Ash from the Wales set up and we have known each other since we were young lads. We played together in the U21s where we were both capped so we have spent a lot of time in each other's company. Having a face that I already know is nice and he has helped me settle in. He has also warned me about the Aberdeen weather!

"I don't know any of the other lads but they have all been brilliant with me since I arrived especially all the goalkeepers. There is a GK Union at every club. That is important as we spend so much time in each other's company. Although there is a lot of competition because there are three or four of you going for the one spot, we all still support each other. It is friendly competition.

"There was interest from other clubs but I felt the move to Aberdeen was the right one for me. The move is something I think I have needed for a couple of season really but circumstances with goalkeepers at Liverpool did not allow me to do that. So I am really looking forward to hopefully getting some game time and hopefully playing well for the club.

"Although I am a big football fan I do not know too much about Scottish football. However I knew Aberdeen was a big club before I came up and I have been very impressed with the way the club is run. As I say all the staff and the lads have been brilliant with me. At the end of the day we are all here for the same purpose and we are all pulling in the same direction.

"My first competitive game could in Europe and that is exciting. It is a different type of challenge. The UEFA Europa League is a great competition to be in and it is a competition Aberdeen should be in because of the size of the club.

"I experienced being in European with Liverpool. In the Champions League it is compulsory that you take three goalkeepers with you to away games. So even though I might not even be on the bench I would still get to travel and train with the team. The experience in that competition was fantastic. We had Real Madrid in our group last year so I got to see all the superstars they have and it was a great occasion, two of the biggest teams in Europe playing each other. It is all good experience and part of my footballing education. I am now looking forward to hopefully playing in Europe. Hopefully I will be playing in the big European games instead of watching them.

"The aim is to push for the number one jersey. I would not have come up otherwise. I am looking to play first team football. There are some good goalkeepers here so I know I will have to work hard and play well to get into the side. It will be a good challenge.

"It is all about development for me at the minute. I know that I am 22 years of age and I am nowhere near the finished article. I still have a lot to learn. Hopefully I can come here and get some game time, play in front of big crowds, for a big club, playing in some big occasions. Hopefully that will put me in good stead and help my development for when I return to Liverpool."

It could be a big season ahead for Danny. As well as hopefully enjoying a successful campaign with the Dons there is a very real chance he could be going to a major tournament next summer. Wales are in a great position to qualify for the European Championships after an historic win over Belgium recently. And with Northern Ireland and Scotland also having a chance to qualify there could be a number of Aberdeen players heading to France for Euro 2016.

"There is a lot of real excitement around the Wales squad. The Belgium result was massive for us. It was a massive confidence boaster to beat the second best team in the world. We now just have to knuckle down and get on with the job in hand. Hopefully we can continue the good form that we are in and qualify. It would be massive for the whole of Wales as it has been so long since they played at a major championships. Being part of that would be very special."[/article]

Their Ireland U21 goalie Danny Rogers has joined Falkirk on loan.

[article=http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/danny-ward-can-success-aberdeen-5957768]JASON BROWN reckons loan keeper Danny Ward can be a big noise at Aberdeen – after revealing glove rival Jamie Langfield gave him the silent treatment at Pittodrie.

Former Reds shot-stopper Brown launched a blistering attack on
Langfield who faces new competition
for the No.1 jersey after the arrival of Liverpool youngster Ward.

The 22-year-old, who recently signed a long-term deal at Anfield, could well be given the top-team gloves as he looks to force his way into a Wales side on the brink of Euro 2016 qualification.

And Brown, capped three times himself for Chris Coleman’s side, has urged Scott Brown and Langfield to accept the challenge from the
Liverpool loanee.

Brown spent two years at
Aberdeen but said his relationship with Langfield, who will receive a testimonial next month after 10 years at the club, was strained after the Scot accused him of stabbing another former Pittodrie loan keeper, David Gonzalez, in the back.

The 33-year-old, now at Sutton United, said: “In my whole career I’ve always had a good relationship with the goalkeepers I’ve been working with but not Jamie.

“We never had a fall-out but we didn’t have a fall-in as such either. It was a weird one because we didn’t get on too great. In fact, we didn’t speak very much at all.

“We were on a lads night out and when I spoke to Jamie to ask if there was an issue between us he said it was because he was told I’d been going into the manager slagging off David Gonzalez. That wasn’t true. All I said was I felt I deserved a chance which is what Jamie would’ve said if he was fit and I was playing.

“I’d gone to Aberdeen to work hard and when David was there I felt we weren’t winning many games and conceding goals.

“I felt I was well within my rights to ask the manager if I could have a chance when everyone else was getting an opportunity.

“But Jamie felt it was an issue. After we spoke it appeared we had buried the hatchet but there must have been another issue because he didn’t talk to me in training.

“I let it distract me and I shouldn’t have. If I don’t get on with someone I still respect them and won’t speak about them behind their back. I just got on with it and cut myself off but there was an atmosphere and the rest of the players picked up on that.

“I won’t pretend to be your friend when we clearly don’t get on. Jim Leighton found the situation awkward with me and Jamie but what else could I do?

“ I see Jim has now gone . He’s been a fantastic servant to Aberdeen and Scottish football but they do say the best players don’t always make
the best coaches. Looking back on it I should maybe have dealt with it better but that’s part of life. I’ve had time to reflect on my time with Aberdeen and there are a lot of things I would have done differently.

“Players are always going in and out and competing for positions but life is too short to be negative.

“I had to battle for my place at Blackburn with Brad Friedel and Paul Robinson who were on a totally different level.

“I had to push and work hard to try to get in there but we had a tremendous relationship and still talk now. It’s the same with other goalkeepers like Steve Banks at
Gillingham and, at Wales, Danny Coyne and Paul Jones.

“We never took it personally if the other one was getting picked. I don’t know if Jamie has grown up since then but I’d like to think he has. Jamie wasn’t fit to play at that time, he was just coming back from his illness.

“It was terrible what he and his family had to go through. And as much as I was playing, there are more important things than football. When he returned to fitness I was glad, even if we were fighting for the same shirt.

“I had one or two issues with Craig Brown. There were a couple of times I felt there was an agenda. I didn’t say Jamie didn’t deserve to be in the team – just that I didn’t deserve to be out of it.

“Obviously there could be an issue for Danny when he goes there but I don’t know him. Jamie has been there a long time and nobody has really established themselves as No.1 there so with Danny going I wish him the best of luck.

“I didn’t know Scott Brown from my time in England and I haven’t heard much about him but from the games I watched last season he seemed to be doing quite well.

“But there was a bit of chopping and changing and maybe the manager feels he wants a first-team goalkeeper.”

Brown believes Derek McInnes could have pulled off a masterstroke with the signing of Ward.

He said: “Aberdeen are striving for the title and the manager obviously has to make some tough decisions. He will have to bring in who he feels are better players if they are going to take the club to the next level.

“I’d imagine that’s what he is doing by bringing in Danny and you can’t cry about it.”

And Brown also believes the move can help Ward challenge Wayne Hennessey for the Wales No.1 jersey.

He added: “Danny will want to go to France when Wales qualify and I believe that’s why he’ll have been keen on this move.

“His thinking will be to go out and play games. I know last season there was a fair bit of changing with the Aberdeen goalkeeping situation so I’d imagine Danny is going to play.”[/article]

Made his debut in the Europa League first qualifying round tie against Macedonian side Shkendija. Match ended 1-1.

Shkendija's equalizer

[article]A solid rearguard display in the Granite City on Thursday secured the goalless draw that eliminated Macedonian outfit Shkendija and set up a second qualifying clash against HNK Rijeka.

Niall McGinn’s away goal in last week’s 1-1 draw in Skopje proved the difference over the two legs and Ward believes that shows the importance of keeping things tight.

The 22-year-old Welshman, who recently joined on loan from Liverpool, said: “The whole defensive unit were very solid when we were called upon. Long may that continue.

“It is my first clean sheet and hopefully it will be the first of many.

“It is always important to keep a clean sheet, especially away in Europe.

“If you get an away goal it is massive.

“It proved the difference in the last round but you go into every game looking to keep a clean sheet – as a defender or goalkeeper that is your bread and butter.”

Aberdeen weren’t at their best at Pittodrie but they achieved their objective of progressing to next Thursday’s clash in Croatia.

Ward said: “Shkendija aren’t a bad side and they proved that over the two legs.

“You can’t underestimate any team in Europe and to get through against any team is a good achievement.

“It wasn’t very pretty but we are through to the next round and that is all that counts. We know where we need to improve.”

Areas for improvement include keeping possession and doing more going forward.

Ward said: “We need to improve our use of the ball. It is hard in European football and you need to keep the ball rather than play end to end.

“We need to manage the game a bit more and it is something we will work on in training.”

Rijeka reached the group stage last season and will be a step up in class for Aberdeen.

Ward said: “We will see the clips and we will be well prepared. [/article]

[article]The on-loan Liverpool goalie didn’t have much to do over two legs against Macedonian minnows Shkendija.

But he was called on in stoppage time to pull off a smart save as he made sure Derek McInnes’s men squeezed through on away goals on a nervy night at Pittodrie.

Ward spared a few red faces but he knows Aberdeen will need to raise their game for the second-round Europa League qualifier against Rijeka next week.

The Croatians have a team rammed full of internationals but the Pittodrie men are out to give them bother in the Balkans.

Ward said: “The save? That is what we keepers are there to do.

“It was the first real save of the game and I was happy to make it but the main thing is we are through.[/article]

[article=http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/spfl/aberdeen-home-debut-delights-goalkeeper-danny-ward-1-3827475]Ward was previously thrust into the action in Macedonia days after joining from Liverpool on a season-long loan deal and he was delighted to secure a trip to Croatia to face Rijeka when he pushed wide a 20-yard strike in injury-time.

The 22-year-old told RedTV: “I did see it late and thankfully got a hand to it. But the back four were great all night. Every time they were called upon they stuck their head in, stuck their foot in, got their bodies in the way.

“It was very disciplined and as a unit we are very happy with the clean sheet, and long may it continue.”

Scott Brown kept eight consecutive Premiership clean sheets last season, and 17 in all in his first season at Pittodrie, but Ward was immediately elevated above both the former Cheltenham keeper and the long-serving Jamie Langfield.

“The reason I came here was to hopefully get games and thankfully the manager has put his faith in me this early in the season,” the Wales squad player said. “I’m very happy to get the first two games under my belt.

“It’s always hard to come into a group of players. You can train as much as you want but it’s more getting to know each other on the pitch and on the big stage. Long may that continue and hopefully I can keep the jersey as long as I can.”[/article]
