Who will replace him? There's no real candidates in the reserves except Hooever. It's gonna be tough finding someone who is willing to come and compete with Matip and Gomez.

This is where I am on it.

Whilst the lad got shitloads of stick, it's simply cos the other CB's are all so much better, think about this, if he were at City this season he'd have probably played at least half of their matches.
 
He scored a nice goal against Dortmund and had a hand in Mane’s goal against Real.

Played his part but no huge loss.
 
Delighted he's going. Only thing he seemed good for was keeping Mo's spirits up.

I'd trust Ragnar Klavan before i'd trust Dejan. The Watford game still irks me.

It's not hard to find a better 4th choice CB. I'd sure we can get a Gomez type in the Championship. Preferably one who can play LB on occasion too.

As long as we get Mbappe to replace him I don't mind.

Salah is just a world class, goalscoring, one footed, weak, pace merchant who lives off the shoulder of the defender. He's more replaceable than Mane who's a world class, strong, pacey, goalscoring, playmaking, two footed, skillful, enigma, who is good with feet and head, and happens to work incredibly hard at both ends of the pitch.

The thing about Salah is he's rarely injured, which is a great quality to have and has provided incredible value for money spent, but I don't rate him as highly as some people on here do. Wouldn't make my all-time Liverpool 11. Mad, I know.

I think we will just use Nat Phillips as 4th choice. If we do sign Thiago, that gives us the option of using Fabinho as a 4th CB too.

Rotation will be Van Dijk, Gomez, Matip, Fabinho, Phillips, Hoever.

Should be ok unless there is some long term injury.

He would be another Henderson in terms of his leadership qualities too.

I think his price wouldn't be as bad as you think, given we are in the middle of a pandemic and economic uncertainty.. Transfer fees will definitely be affected..

£20m maybe £25m tops and an upgrade on Lovren

Gosh, I hope not. Phillips is probably worse ability wise than Lovren. Without the ego though.

We need another. We should look at picking up Ake or Lloyd Kelly if Bournemouth go down.

That all sounds great, but he's isn't gonna give up his captains armband at Wolves that easily.
 
We aren't selling Lovren for 10 million to spunk another 30 million on a 4th choice CB. The way it will be that Klopp will rely primarily on VVD, Gomez and Matip, with Fabinho filling in if needed. If we sign a 4th choice, it'd be some experienced pro who's happy to be part of the training group, and is ready to play maybe 5-10 games through the year. Maybe Howedes? He's available on a free.

I see people mentioning Lloyd Kelly but he already rejected us once to join Bournemouth because he'd have a bigger chance of playing. Also, we don't know anything about him.

Good shout. Fabinho is definitely a capable 4th choice, the only issue is that we basically need two teams if we're going to compete all competitions.

He's barely played at Bournemouth. I think he got injured for a long time.

To be honest, I've only him play once recently against Leicester (outside of YT highlights) and he was very poor in the first half playing at CB.

I only bring his name up as we've been linked with him, and his YT highlights he looked decent at FB. He's got the frame and build of a player (Gomez like) that can play both LB and CB positions which for me is the ideal profile of player we need to cover Robbo and Lovren (as 4th choice).

In terms of game-time, I don't think we can sign an out and out LB to cover Robbo (as they simply won't play much). Unless it's a Zambrotta type FB who is 2 footed and offer cover on both sides.

Or, we can go the route of signing a LB/LW type (young Bale/Sessengon). Saka from Arsenal could have been useful.

I agree it's gonna be hard finding someone who's ready to sit on the bench. Sessegnon isn't really that good defensively and he's been generally average every time I've seen him. Saka would have been perfect, but he's in a big club already and they rate him very highly.
I think the best route is to try and find a young defender with high potential who hasn't really broken through yet. Or someone desperate to stay premiership. Maybe look at someone from the relegated teams. Don't get me wrong Lloyd Kelly fits the mould, but I don't know how good he is.
Jamal Lewis at Norwich is another option, but he's a project.
 
On the whole, Lovren hasn't been awful for us. We have all seen a hell of a lot worse defenders over the years. Time for him to move on though I think, especially as that looks like a pretty decent fee.

In terms of a replacement, how is Hoever progressing? I haven't seen a lot of him. Is he still a few years off and more likely to be a potential replacement for Matip?

Given that our four centre backs did all get a fair number of games in the past few seasons I don't think we can afford to go into the new season with only three.
 
With JoGo and Matip’s injury record, combined with Van Dyke’s leg barely being attached to his body by a bit of thread - we may need a new CB.
 
11mill?!? Absolutely marvellous work by the club again. Wouldn't even grumbled really if the decimal place had been moved over a spot
