Diogo Jota - died in car crash RIP

TBF It doesn't say they've donated 15m, it says they've donated a share of that. Pedro Neto was very close to Diogo and he could easily have suggested they all chuck in 25k and across that squad this could be anywhere from like 500 - 750k

It wouldn't surprise me if they said just add another two to the divisible number. Then donate that amount. That way everyone chips in the same amount.

For some reason, I am skeptical this is true. How reliable is the source. It just makes no sense.

The west London club were crowned champions of FIFA’s newly-expanded tournament in July, defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Their success in the tournament earned the club an estimated $114.6million (£84.4m).

Chelsea have subsequently allocated a $15.5m (£11.4m) fund to be distributed equally between the players
who represented Enzo Maresca’s side during the tournament, with a decision made jointly between club and players that an equal payment will also be made to Jota’s family.

The overall value of each portion tallies more than $500k before it’s subjected to currency conversion costs from US dollars into UK pound sterling, alongside relevant employer costs, taxes and social security costs.

To be fair £25k for each member of the Chelsea squad is something like £15m.
But regardless, it's a great gesture. It's clear from the behind the scenes videos that Diogo was a real character, someone who will have been popular in every dressing room he's been in. And there've been lots of kind, heartfelt gestures. The Portuguese lads from United coming over to Anfield to pay a tribute, I bet they'll have done something financial too. And I'm sure they knew club loyalties would be put to one side over something like this, that we'd have welcomed them paying their respects.
I'm sure our lads will be doing their bit, hopefully for Andre Silva's family too.

RIght. I had misread that it was 15M and not part of the players bonus of 15M. Seeing this is something driven by the Chelsea players, makes a lot more sense to me and very welcomed.

Yeah, it's still a generous gesture, regardless, and most of us would manage very nicely for a long time with that kind of money in our pockets.
Fair play to them, and I bet they're all a bit embarrassed that it's been made public too.
And in fairness, there's a lot of this stuff that goes on that we never hear about. Most footballers don't come from wealthy backgrounds, and most of them don't forget where they came from either.

James Milner has revealed he had a catch-up with Diogo Jota the night before his passing:

🗣️
“Nothing major, just checking in and asking each other how things were going... Someone asked, ‘Is that true?’ and I didn’t know at that point. I messaged someone at Liverpool to try to find out and… just horrific. Not many tougher days than that.

🗣
“I loved the guy, absolutely loved him. Loved him as a player, loved him even more as a team-mate and a friend, absolutely loved him. Carlos (Baleba) wanted to change his number, so the No 20 became available and it felt like the right thing for me to do. Every day when I put my kit on, I’ll think of him.

🗣
“We were only together at Liverpool for three seasons and you might not have thought we had much in common — different nationalities, very different ages — but we hit it off immediately. Maybe it was because we were both so stubborn. Honestly, people say I’m stubborn, but Jots could give me a run for my money.

🗣
“He was an unbelievable guy, one of my favourite team-mates I’ve had in all my time playing. He was always up for a laugh, always winding people up. He was one of those you could put in any corner of the dressing room, next to any other player, and he would click with them straight away.”

Have to say the general reaction from all corners of the footballing world has been very wholesome and kind, and must be a great source of comfort for both his family and all those who knew him well. Wherever his family choose to live, they'll want for nothing and always be able to call Liverpool home. I'd love them to stay, though. There's always something nice where footballers and their families, with all the money in the world, feel settled and fall in love with Merseyside, and I'll be kind and say Cheshire, too. I'm sidebaring, but I love how Rafa and his Montse are still so connected and wedded to the area and get involved in charitable events for the area. http://www.rafabenitez.com/mbfoundation/

It would be nice if Rute and her children followed a similar path, but I'd fully understand if the longing for Portugal and being close to family came first.

Have other non-scouse families stayed in the area post retirement or leaving the club?

Rafa still lives up the road from me.
Loads of the old guard still around here, but mostly British (Hansen, Kenny (obvs) Barnes). Heskey used to be around here somewhere, Didi too. Most obvious foreign player I can think of is Jan Molby, but he's practically Scouse anyway.
