With Henderson signed, Downing on his way and a potential marquee signing, where does it leave Kuyt?

On the bench?

Granted he's 31 years old and next season is probably his last at Anfield but I wonder what his role will be at the start of the season. IMO we haven't yet bought or been linked to anyone who can displace a starting member of our team. Am I wrong?

yep, cant break up that suarez kuyt partnership

The media next season:
"Liverpool have the most expensive bench in the premiership"

"Liverpool: Are they the new man city?"

Kuyt will get enough games regardless of who we sign. But whether it's 60% or 95% depends really on who we sign.

I have said for some time, the litmus test of our progression will be when Dirk and Lucas are not automatic choices, I believe that time is coming to pass.

Maybe Vlad. Really does depend on who we end up signing though and I still feel he has a big part to play next year

You've been about as wrong as wrong can be regarding them both over the last few years.

Some of you fellas are assuming Deadly will be in contention as an RM. I reckon that he'll be no more than an emergency stand-in for that role, that striker will be regarded as his main position now and that he'll get his fair share of games with Carroll (a) still to fully prove his fitness and (b) still settling into the club anyway.

Well we will see how wrong I continue to be in the coming season.

I don't think I have been wrong personally, but I would say that.

To summarise, this is what I have said, and what my feelings are .

Dirk is a great chap, will run through walls a great work ethic etc etc.
He is not suited to play on the right wing. He is not really good enough to be a first choice striker. He is a great squad player.

Lucas was pretty shit when he arrived, and has improved considerably. Again I admire his determination and fortitude.
He is now an average to good midfielder, no more than that - a million miles from where he was , but still not of the right quality to hold down a place in a team that wants to challenge
for the premiership. People have been kidded by this improvement, particularly over the last few months to think he is something that he is not. Again I don't want to see him go particularly as I see him as a good squad player.

So there we are, agree or disagree as you like.

Would agree with portions of this. Don't like the comparison between Dirk and Lucas though for Dirk has really been the far superior player over the course of the last 4 years.

Which portions would you disagree with D?

agree with every word of that, vlad. that said, I think dirk will start the majority of games, the only way I see kuyt dropping out of the first is if downing (if he signs) and henderson start with a bang AND carroll is either struggling (for form) or has injuries, how likely is all of that to happen at the same time?

I think he's good enough to play in the first team as a striker. In fact, unless Carroll develops, I would actually prefer Kuyt. His work rate is something he always get lauded for but I also think he's a very intelligent and technically underrated footballer. I agree with your point that he has his limitations and that he can be frustrating to watch when stuck out wide.

Agree with you 100% on Lucas though.

When we're playing well he can be fairly instrumental to our attack and our variation, he's also far more clever a player than he's criminally ever given credit for by the same posters on here.

I don't think we're kidding ourselves at all, because I've heard it all before. If eventually he slips down the pecking order, it won't be through lack of quality, it'll be because he's on the decline and judging by how he played in the latter half of last season, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen just yet.

Top man, top red and a top, top player. He'll play. Alot.

He's a strange sort, to be sure.

I remember Ryan championing Kuyt long before he arrived, and I had big opes that he'd be as prolific as he was in Holland.

Turns out he wasnt a very good striker, and I thought 'another fucking Morientes/Diouf/insert waste of space here'

Then he reinvents himself as some sort of midfielder and his drive often makes him invaluable to us.

Not a great striker, not a great midfielder, a crap winger.

And yet he's proven to be one of our best acquisitions over the past 5 years.

Head-scratcher, thasfodamsho.
