He's a strange sort, to be sure.

I remember Ryan championing Kuyt long before he arrived, and I had big opes that he'd be as prolific as he was in Holland.

Turns out he wasnt a very good striker, and I thought 'another fucking Morientes/Diouf/insert waste of space here'

Then he reinvents himself as some sort of midfielder and his drive often makes him invaluable to us.

Not a great striker, not a great midfielder, a crap winger.

And yet he's proven to be one of our best acquisitions over the past 5 years.

Head-scratcher, thasfodamsho.

I think that is almost one of the best posts in this thread Avvy

My thanks,Vladders.

Tha's actually why I'm fond of him. Strictly speaking, he should have turned out to be a colossal failure, and his re-invention and subsequent success with a limited set of skills is nothing short of phenomenal.

The other reason is because he's shown tremendous charactr and loyalty to this club, especially during sme terrible times.

I think back up for Carroll will be the main role for Dirk from this point onwards, next season should see us with the personnel that will demote him to 2nd choice for both the wide right midfield birth and target man leading the line. He will get plenty of games and contribute as always but not having to watch him play through the 10 game spell a season where he is incapable of doing even the most basic things correctly will be a welcome break, plus at 31 you cant ask him to cover that much ground in 40 odd games a season anymore. I think he will be used for us thw way Park is for Utd, in the big games when you have to have 11 players doing a disciplined job with no passengers he will be in there, for lesser games he may get rested periodically

Thats fine by me, taking the long term view, if you keep asking players like Dirk Carra and Gerrard to start every game then the injuries are inevitable
