Do it like an old French dude

Just thinking about this thread again , going back to Moneyball and the developments since, what happened in baseball was that everyone noticed the value that the Oakland A's were finding in OBP, since then the competition and subsequently the price for players with a good OBP have risen dramatically. While it's still an attractive skill to find in a player, it's not cheap anymore and other teams managed to find other areas that have consequently found other attributes that were undervalued - defence.

In football it's not as clear cut as that, but when you look at the buying of young English players which is popular and expensive at the moment - it's the route that Arnesen and then Commoli took years ago with Spurs when they picked up Dawson, Lennon etc for peanuts.

Since then Villa attempted something similar, Birmingham have done it, Arsenal have been doing it, as have United.

I'm thinking Comolli was finding value at that time, but is still attempting to do the same thing now but the value isn't there to be found. So if it isn't in young English players it means there's plenty of value to be had elsewhere. We need to find it.

I'm not so sure that's the case, Ross...

The most promising English players have always gone for lots of money; it's just that now the definition of 'promising' seems to have been bastardized when even one or two decent seasons earmarks someone as the next Great Hope.

We keep talking about the need to spot quality before it becomes expensive so much so it becomes practically a mantra, but it remains so crucial

I suppose the difference is that these players are almost being treated as the next Wayne Rooney's in the talent stakes (and they're being bought from established Premiership sides). If they are indeed "the future of English football" then you can treat is a value probably - it's a big big risk.

The players Spurs bought a few years back tended to be punts on players everyone knew were too good for the Championship, but understood there was a risk in paying money to see whether that talent would translate in the Premiership.

I think we should be looking abroad far more than we are at the moment. Not just in terms of value for money, but quality for money.

I mentioned Erik Lamela before who is highly rated in Argentina; others we should look at are;
Douglas Costa, Willian - Shaktar
Anninadze - Spartak Moscow
Draxler - Schalke
Herrera - Mentioned him a couple months back when he just signed for Bilbao
Sarabia - Real Madrid but looks like going to Benfica

all good young talent

others would include;

Kroos - Bayern 10-15mil
Howedes - Schalke 10-15mil
Vidal - Bayer 15-20mil
Inler - Udinese 8-10mil

There is plenty of talent out there for the prices we are willing to pay, just need our scouting dept to do abit more work

Douglas Costa and Kroos look good in the video clips I've seen. Inler on the other hand is someone I've never seen having a particularly good game. Never heard of the others - hopefully Comolli will be more clued up than I am.

Another top up coming kid is the uruguayan kid from porto, RODRIGUEZ, plays on the wings and is only 19. could be signed for near the 10mil mark maybe

Ever Banega His contract is runing down in a year (I think).

Would be available for 8-12 million.

Today's news. Wonder which English side it is. Tottenham?

Valencia have revealed that two Italian clubs are keen on Ever Banega – but Napoli are not one of them.

“There is a lot of interest in Banega,” Valencia sporting director Braulio Vazquez told Radio CRC.

“Two Italian clubs have asked us for information on him, but Napoli have not been in touch. An English side have contacted us too.

“However, Valencia don’t want to sell him because he is one of the most important midfielders in the world.”

The 22-year-old Argentine international was signed by his present Spanish club in 2008 from Boca Juniors.

A fee of €10m-€15m seems too low for a key player like Banega,” Vazquez added when asked how much the youngster is worth.

“You also have to consider that his valuation will only rise after the Copa America. It would be hard to let go of him.

Definitely Spurs! They'll be interviewing Arry live from the Range Rover reeling names of players to him and Arry'll be there quipping "yeah he's a top top player".

Sky will prob show footage from last year and fob it off as this years window. No one will notice any difference.

Binny, remember the player I was asking you about Lucas Moura? What about him? I think he plays with Lucas on his shirt and is about 18/19.

Tipped for greatness, soon to be mentioned in the same sentences as Ganso and Neymar. Central Midfielder.

Apparently linked with us by the Brazilian press today, in the reign of £9million. Report says that if Leonardo's move to PSG as sporting director is confirmed, he will be targeted by the French Ligue 1 side too.

That's good craic. We went from struggling to remember his name to being linked to us within a week.

Style of Play: Lucas has the technical, physical, and mental assets to make him a danger for any opposition. For São Paulo he usually plays as a right midfielder, although for the Brazilian Sub-20 team he played as a classic #10 at the centre of the field for most of the tournament. Wherever he is positioned though, Lucas is at his best when given free reign to roam the pitch. With incredible acceleration and pace, mixed with a surprising amount of strength and energy, Lucas is the type of player that often makes runs down the field, beating three to four players with his technical skills, before making a pass or taking a shot at goal. His physicality on the ball reminds one of a young Ronaldo (the R9 version) making runs that see him simply refuse to lose the ball. He differs from Ronaldo since he tends to play from deeper positions, which allows him more creative freedom to set up goals for teammates. Brazil U20 manager Ney Franco had this to say about him after the South American Sub-20 competition (translated from Portuguese):

Lucas gives the coach the option of changing the team during the game. He can be a second forward, a centralized playmaker, a winger, or even a deep lying midfielder. He plays in direction of the goal. Lucas uses his strength a lot and finishes well too. Tactially, he is also very intelligent, and understands the game well. His decision making during matches is impressive. I think Lucas doesn’t feel the weight of wearing Brazil’s jersey.
