I think he deserves his own thread. I've been one of his more vocal critics, and I don't want this to just descend into name-calling (though it would be understandable).

But he's just not good enough, is he? His stats aren't too bad. But I've seen players like Fernandes and Pogba who spent years stat padding, and now we have our own. The majority or his goals come in league cup and Europa League games against weak opposition, and his premier league goals often the 4th in a 4-1 win for example.

But what gets me most is his attitude. He's so lacklustre, and someone in the match thread...

Halmeister never misses. Everyone he thinks is shit is actually very good.

Haven’t noticed him on here for a while, he’ll presumably pop up next time we lose with an i told you so.

A few people in that thread made a point that he might do better playing for a manager that uses a more controlled approach - and were spot-on.

Same for Gravvy, really.

Well I was all aboard the Cody boat. But half the forum didn't post in that thread so there must have been other threads whilst that one died a quick death.

If there was a graph for footballers where the X axis is how aesthetically pleasing they look with the ball and Y is being effective and efficient, both Gakpo and Salah would definitely be closer to the Y territory. Not so many players excel in both parameters, to be fair - you cannot serve two masters. Messi is such an outlier because he could do both.

What I really appreciate about Gakpo is the added value of his athleticism and size in addition to all the usual winger stuff. Even in games where he could not get the better of his opposing fullback he would sometimes find just one moment to use his speed and size to get in front of him at the far post and make a telling contribution. I always thought Griezmann was one such winger with added value of being de-facto a 2nd striker. I would much rather have that than a low-scoring winger who looks easy on the eye.

One aspect of his game I’d like to see him improve is to take fullbacks on the outside more frequently - when he cuts in by default or too early it makes it more predictable and often gets in the way of other players. Better to make it rare but devastating.
 
I don't think my opinion of any of our forwards has changed this season.

I haven't read through the other thread (to see if I posted) but I've always thought Gakpo was a good / talented player. I think when he was shunted around under Klopp he tended to get lost in games and perhaps lost some confidence. This season we're seeing a more confident, more settled Gakpo, which is great... and there have been games where he's really stood up to be counted.

THAT said, I'm not massively wedded to keeping any of them (Gakpo / Diaz / Jota), particularly with Salah's time coming to an end here (whether it's in the summer or in a season or two).
 
I always liked him, and still think he could work through the middle, but how good is cody atm?

So direct, rarely loses the ball but very positive at the same time. Our best shot too perhaps?

Add to that disciplined and an intelligent player.

Our 4 dutch are smashing it!
