STEWART DOWNING: BRENDAN RODGERS BLAST SAVED ME AT LIVERPOOL

STEWART Downing has revealed how Brendan Rodgers’ no-nonsense message has rescued his Liverpool career.


The Anfield boss publicly questioned winger Downing’s commitment just a few months ago and suggested he could leave during the transfer window.

Rodgers followed his comments with a frank face-to-face talk with Downing, who has since become one of the Reds’ most consistent performers.

Downing, 28, revealed: “It was very open. I wasn’t in the team or playing and he said to me maybe I could look elsewhere, because I need to play at my age.


“I didn’t totally agree but I understood where he was coming from. Obviously, he needs players who are going to play and not be sat about.

“But I thought in the back of my mind that if I get a chance I can prove myself to him. Luckily enough, I did in the next week or so after that.”

The conversation took place in November after disappointing Downing had spent much of the season on the substitutes’ bench.

But, after deciding to fight rather than give in, he has now started 10 matches on the run, with Rodgers (left) praising his performances.

Downing recalled: “I wasn’t playing and then I got into the team but was told I could leave – that just sums football up for you.

“I could sense it as I wasn’t in the team or playing.

“The manager didn’t see me as part of his plans at the time.

“But I just got on with it and thought that when he gave me a chance, I’d just have to take it.

“It was because of injuries and loss of form of others players that I got a chance and my only focus in every game now is to make the manager keep me in the team.”

The England player joined Liverpool for £20m from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011 and, after a patchy start to the current campaign, has now clearly raised his game.

He said: “A good run of games has been good for me. I think I’ve proven in my career that if I play regularly, I tend to give good and consistent performances.

“It was disappointing because I was in and out, in and out and it was all a bit frustrating at times.

“But the best thing is playing in a winning team and playing with good players helps.

“And there’s consistency in the team, which helps my game.

“My aim every game is to make the boss not leave me out.

“The only way to do that is for me to perform well.

“I’ve basically had nothing to lose and that’s helped me over the last few weeks – and long may it continue.”

I predict he will be man of the match against the latics before he has a stinker against the Arsenal.
