Reds make Downing approach


Skysports.com understands Liverpool have made an approach to sign Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing.

The England international has impressed for Villa this season and has been an ever-present for the club in the Premier League.

He is Villa's top scorer with five goals in the league and is understood to have been the subject of an enquiry from Sunderland last week.

The 26-year-old is now being targeted by Liverpool as new manager Kenny Dalglish seeks to inject some fresh blood into his squad.

Downing cost Villa £12million from Middlesbrough 18 months ago and he has made 64 appearances after injury delayed the start of his career in the Midlands.

Villa boss Gerard Houllier revealed last month that he was confident that he would be able to retain the services of Downing during the January transfer window.

However, Villa's pursuit of Sunderland striker Darren Bent could prompt the club to consider letting Downing move on.

An offer of £18million is reported to have been made for Bent and cashing in on Downing would provide some of the funds to bring in his fellow England international.

And Downing is one of Villa's top scorers this season (not saying much, but anyway)

But buying YET ANOTHER winger with no pace? Hmmmm.
 
There have been a few links now between us and Villa (though hardly surprising given Ged is their manager), so maybe something is in the pipeline. We could do worse than Warnock, Young or Downing, but we could do better too.
 
as far as I'm concerned buying a left midfielder than is comfortable playing on the left will improve us. downing isn't amazing but he's leagues better than anyone we have on the left currently.

Its been so bad i think my downing syndrome has been almost cured..... i fucking hate downing but he is better than what we have got.
 
i like downing. It'd be nice to have someone who can whip quality in to the box

Think of Downing as a verb and you'll soon realize why all the teams he's played for are either relegated, have been relegated, will be relegated or are in the relegation zone.

pace is a bonus, skill, passing ability, final ball when crossing and chipping in with goals are more important.

SWP has pace, Adam Johnson is not that quick I know which one I would prefer

Plus the old argument, Beckham and Freddie L never had pace but were two of the most successful wingers ever in the PL.
