So these rumours about warnock was actually downing...
No. Both.

And Downing is one of Villa's top scorers this season (not saying much, but anyway)

But buying YET ANOTHER winger with no pace? Hmmmm.
pace is a bonus, skill, passing ability, final ball when crossing and chipping in with goals are more important.

SWP has pace, Adam Johnson is not that quick I know which one I would prefer

Plus the old argument, Beckham and Freddie L never had pace but were two of the most successful wingers ever in the PL.
FFS. LJUNGBERG WAS ONE OF THE QUICKEST WINGERS IN PREMIERSHIP HISTORY WHEN SIGNED
nah, he wasn't, DB has never been quick that is for sure

SWP is the perfect example of pace without end product. There have been shit loads of successful wingers who were not exactly pocket rockets, Giggs has done ok the last 5 yrs and I bet I could have him a 60m sprint since he has been over 30

In our treble year we had Spud Murphy or Barmby on the wing FFS

well....that was an unexpected response
They had it comming.

Fox, pace is a requirement. Yes without brains they'll never be great players but teams struggle with pace. aaron lennon is thick as 2 planks yet ripped us to bits. Pace is necessary for average wingers. Pace + intelligence gives you the world class players. In my mind only figo stands out as a winger who never had great pace yet was amazing.

DB i'd class more as a right mid rather than winger. A different type of player completely

He's nowhere near as bad as you lot are making out.

Better than anything we have too.

Providing its sensible wages and fee than I'm game, although I'd rather spent 50% more and get young

Downing seems to try every game, young doesn't, so i dont' mind spending that extra money towards a midfielder

Fox believing he could beat Lord Ryan Giggs, a professional athlete and naturally fast, over 60m is hilarity, cubed.

If we continue to play 4-3-3, we may not be looking for traditional wingers. Downing seems to me to be a left-footed version of Maxi. Not sure if that is good or bad. I like Maxi as an option, but not necessarily for every game. I think I would feel the same about Downing.

He's alot better than any other wanker we've played on the left this season......but will ultimately turn out to be a Riera type and will want replacing by someone better in time.

Yeah, I was gonna make this point, he's similar to Riera, which will give us balance and a couple more goals, but that's about it, he's not top quality and for the price he'll probably fetch, it's not worth it.

Downing is decent but pedestrian. Ship out a few players and splash the cash on a proper pacy winger.

Go big or go home!

If Riera was a 6/10 player, Downing is a 6.5/10 players. Which is better than what we have on either flank right now; the shame.

Really, I don't mind Downing as an option. He's good enough to be in our squad. Good enough to start. But if money is at premium and we're spending 12m on him, why not just add an extra 6m on it and get someone potentially MUCH better like Suarez (as a forward/partner for Fernando) or Bastos or A.Sanchez or Hazard, etc etc..

So 3 pages of these owners are fuckwits due to a rumour from Sky Sports, who don't get anything right..

The latest rumours are that we are looking at Young. Now, I wouldn't mind him at a reasonable price.

Downing has a long contract, and will cost a shiteload. It won't happen imho.

If this isn't the only signing we make, i don't mind getting Downing as much as some people on here seem to mind.

First - the price range should be right 8 - 10 million pounds.

Second - We should still try to add at least one top quality player.

I do understand that we can't get 20 million players for every position as some people on this thread seem to be expecting.

How about being a little bit more realistic?

According to some other sites we're close to agreeing a fee with Villa, and a lot could happen over the next few days. Apperantly its a rather large fee..

SCM is going to melt down like RAWK would if Lucas got sold...

Didnt Villa spend 12 mill on him? Looking at least 15 mill imho. IF thats the case its insane.

I wouldn't really worry about what we pay for him as we don't know how much we've got to spend. £12m is neither here nor there if we're loaded. Saying that, I think he's a bag of shite.

Hmmm...can't say i'm too excited about Downing potentially signing for us.

At 26/27? and about 7 seasons(at a guess) in the top flight, has he shown he's Liverpool standard?

In flashes he's looked a brilliant winger with a wand of a left foot, skill and the ability to deliver pinpoint crosses...but he's never done it consistently and that's a worry for me.

Sunderland/Everton and Villa where's he at now is about Downing's level in my view.

If he does sign for us, i'll be behind him 100% and hope he's a star, but at this moment i'm not keen.

Re: Re: Downing

Hmm. If we get mata as well then I'll allow this

we keep getting linked to average players and it is driving me insane... 18M!! he has only got a year left no?? fuck it
