Post Match EPL Arsenal (A) 0-0 January 8th 20:00

Well well well.

The pre game thread was littered with comments about being humiliated, bummed, destroyed and phoning in a performance.

We started out like any team away to a top of the table side. Keep the crowd quiet for the first 20 which we did.

Our defensive shape was exceptional and we grew into the first half from there.

Should have been leading at the break after some beautiful play through their press on multiple occasions.

The second half was virtually complete domination away to Arsenal with 69% possession. Remember everyone said we wouldn’t have the ball?

We were composed, brave and intelligent on the ball. Very rarely took the safe option and played some fucking magical one touch football to keep the ball and create opening.

Only twice this season in 30 games Arsenal have failed to score, both against us.

They didn’t have a shot at all until stoppage time in the second half and on another day one of Dom 4 or 5 strikes would have gone in.

I do wish Frimpong shot or found Wirtz with that opportunity but all things considered that was an incredible second half display.

Does it mean we’ve turned the corner no.
Does it mean we’ll get up to third or second no.
Does it mean Slot is safe or doing enough no.

What it does show is that he’s a hell of lot better than most give him credit for and this team is slowly gelling and their is a chink of light at the end of the tunnel.

It also tells me my inkling that we can win the CL with a bit of luck is spot on. We can match anyone on our day.

And all of that without:

Isak
Hugo
Salah

Get them back for the run in and we can hurt anyone in Europe.

@Modo how’s that humble pie?

Humble pie because we drew.

You've gone off the deep end

So many positives

Frimpong very dangerous and a great outlet
It looked like we had a plan
Macca with by far his best performance this season
Kerkez played well
Gravy was great
We passed well and found the space in the midfield, although this was because we overloaded with wirtz dropping back

A few negatives
No courage or conviction in the final 3rd.
Gakpo shite
No real ambition to try and win the game - surely Rio or Chiesa could have come on for Gakpo?
Bradders obvs

Gotta be happy that we have players coming back to form and it actually looks like we have a plan. But if we play with a CF and don't have a false 9 would we dominate the midfield as we did? Big questions remain

Me and my lad (City fan) were taking the piss out of his shitness all game.

Arse played 65 mins with 10 on the pitch until Gyokeres got subbed. we played the full 90 with 10
Just rubbish. He worked his socks off and won multiple crucial frees. You can’t overemphasis the importance of buying a free kick to reset and release pressure.

Clearly doesn’t trust them but also we were on top. If he had changed it and momentum switched he’d get murdered.

Was half wondering this myself throughout the game - whether I would want to bring on a sub to risk us losing the control of the second half.

Would have brought a Chiesa on for Gakpo towards the end to just give the option and stop Arsenal thinking they could charge forward against tired legs like they did at the end to threaten and rob it last minute.

Pfft I'm not eating any humble pie based on that performance.

Anything not to lose.

You can understand it in the context of this game. The problem is that this is part of a wider trend.
When you lose 9 in 12 it’s entirely understandable.

We aren’t winning the league this season. Do enough to get CL and put everything into winning that instead. So far that tactic is working very well with a 5pt cushion to 6th and confidence returning with a long unbeaten run to have a good crack at the CL.

He’s the manager of Liverpool for fuck sake. I don’t care about his ego.
Pretty much every manager we have ever had would take a draw away to the league leaders.

It was absolute the right call. If he made chances and we lost it would have been on him.

I want to like this post. I do. I just can't quite click on that little thumb. But close.

That’s such a narrow point that often gets trotted out. We had several efforts that flew just wide, had blocked shots and hit the bar.
You won’t win without getting the ball between the sticks.
The Wirtz one was definitely a penalty.
No it wasn’t. The ball was gone and wasn’t under control. The move was over by the time there was contact.

No. I just like my attackers to pass the ball and not look completely fucking lost in possession
Except everytime he drew a foul in possession.

By the way I’m not saying he was good going forward but fuck me he did a good job for the team and often was behind Kerkez.

Salah got roasted for not working for the team.

Of all the games to hammer Gakpo this is a strange one imo where the wingers didn’t have a striker to link with so it was understandable they turned back a lot.

If there's no striker you drive in to the box when wirtz, szob or Frimpong has the ball. He didn't. He didn't link up with anyone in an attacking sense.

If the only praise we can give gakpo today is that he fell over in possession, then surely chiesa or Rio could have done that?

uhm GIF

said it in the match thread as well. martinelli himself has had a few bad knee injuries hasn’t he? you’d expect some sympathy there. he has been promoted to my list of cunts i will actively dislike in football

He's shite. It's hilarious

We need to never buy from Portugal again. Nunez and gyokeres prove that league is cursed for strikers
the guy that replaced gyokeres scored a bajillion goals in s couple of games after he arrived too
