Post Match EPL Arsenal (A) 0-0 January 8th 20:00

180 mins against Arse and no goals conceded. In fact wins to nil against Madrid, Inter and Villa. So while it was good and bodes well for the CL, it doesn't give any confidence that we can beat the shite we face week in week out... And losing Tayto for months will be awful.

The work rate was definitely better, and improved as the game went on. The second half was the first time I've seen us press aggressively and effectively in months. Lets hope we haven't just turned into a Rafa team that only raises its game for the big occasion.

This is what gives me some level of Hopium about the CL. But we can't go into the second half of the season with the squad we now have with new injury to Bradders on top of Gomez & Leoni. WTF are we doing.

Pretty much every manager we have ever had would take a draw away to the league leaders.

It was absolute the right call. If he made chances and we lost it would have been on him.
Again, at a club like Liverpool, the manager’s ego is the least consideration. If he made changes and we lost - and he received some criticism - his job is to stay confident, positive and prove his coaching nous over the next games.

The players were spent, Bradley’s knee went off the ball, Gakpo was walking around, our midfield were starting to labour…conservative Arteta used all his subs trying to win the game…Slot ignored his bench again.

As a footnote, ‘we didn’t have anyone any better on the bench’ is not an excuse. Even if our bench was markedly objectively weaker, at 80 mins you’re comparing a lesser player with 100% energy and fresh legs against a superior player playing at 70% due to fatigue.

Exactly. We're unlucky in some respects up front (except not replacing Diaz, that's just fucking stupid) but the defence looks so thin. I know the only things that get shovelled in January are snow and shit, but we need to buy some of that shit right now. I mean imagine we found a Matip or similar, Ekitike stays fit, he starts using Ngumoha, and we lifted big ears in Budapest in May. All would be forgiven forever.

Ive my accommodation & flights booked for Budapest, that's how confident I am

And if not we have a (old) lads weekend away on the piss, like we did in Munich last year

I can't understand the angst about not using subs. Slot's first priority was to keep a a clean sheet & then second to maybe catch them out. Given that the world and his wife were expecting a humiliating bum rape, this was a sensible and obvious prioritisation.

The 11 out there were doing a brilliant job for priority 1, firstly by defending deep in the first half, and then, in the second half, holding possession higher up the pitch, which had a chance of achieving priority 2. Bringing on a Chiesa or Rio may have increased the chance of achieving priority 2, but could have completely disrupted our priority 1 activities. That was a risk Slot was not prepared to take in this game and I think that was right.

Compare this to a match against lesser opposition when, chasing the win, the throws on a bunch of attacking subs and Virgil goes up top, and everyone is criticising him for not having a clue ...
It was the one game where I wasn't really crying out for a sub, because we were playing so efficiently, I think a sub could have disrupted the rhythm. That said, Gakpo was awful for the most part and I don't think putting on Chiesa in his place would have made a huge lot of negative difference.

As for the penalty, I don't think it was that obvious, I'd have been miffed if that was given against us. It might be a foul anywhere else on the pitch, but there are loads of challenges that are fouls outside the box, but never given inside the box.

The only sub I wanted was gakpo off, solely because it was like we didn't have a player there. Winning a foul in our half isn't a reason to keep someone on. He offered no outlet, no height or strength (lost a majority of ground and aerial duels), didn't hold up the ball.

He wasn't involved.

Heaven forbid a fan gets sick of our own fans talking about fucking shite we are and will get humiliated and calls it out pre game when we are on the longest current unbeaten run in the league. And it’s not like it was people were just saying we would lose, the talk was us getting played off the park.

I’m very happy with whatever that says about me as a fan and a person.
Once again you cherry pick a points and ignore everything else.. You do this time and time again..
Ffs a few weeks ago you were boasting about having this awesome football coverage that is so much better than what we get over here and especially for those who have to stream games. You implied that this gave you a better understanding than us poor fools here in the uk/ireland

You go on how we have played this season and even over our amazing 10 game unbeaten run which you love to go on about (which included shit preformances and draws against Leeds 2, Fulham, Sunderland but generally poor attacking preformances though that run)
I never said we'd get battered, felt it could happen but I did kinda feel that because of how arsenal play we might sneak a draw with us being so defence.. We played alot better than I expected but also feel arsenal played it to safe against us because Arteta is a cowardly bellend and could have sent a massive statement to their rivals

Gloating about a 0-0 draw is just weird.. We had 0 shots on target. Hit the cross bar which was unlucky and frimpong got into dangerous positions about 2 or 3 times and made wrong positions and send in some shit crosses and a free kick that was close but keeper would have always felt it was over the bar.. That about sums up our attack last night.

I don't think there is any reason to gloat about yesterdays result, but compared to our recent struggles it was a step in the right direction. Effort, passion and a growing confidence added with a very good defensive performance.
Means nothing if we can't show the exact same against Burnley and add in more attacking threat. Much much more.

The priority was a point. We got that. Whether subs would have made a difference who knows. Lewis what’s his face came in cold and got left for dead. No subs was a fair call.

I very much doubt it would be on here. It would just shift to thanks for the CL and league now fuck off.

I’ve thought we are a big a chance for the CL all along. Our problems aren’t as exposed in the CL for a variety of reasons.

Since when is winning a free kick not an out?

Hammering a fan for gloating and being happy about arguably our best performance of the season under these circumstances is a hell of lot weirder.

The priority was a result, it wasn't "a point". We knew we were without players and it would be a struggle, but lets not act like we had a "lets just nick a point" masterplan. We clearly wanted to score, we just couldn't. Stop making out there was some succinct, carefully executed plan to just walk away with a draw.

And stop championing Gakpo doing the very basics, he was the worst Liverpool player on the pitch.

For all the complaining about subs, if we didn't have FA Cup this weekend I guarantee we would have used some. Jones wasn't fit so was there in spirit only. Rio might have been an ok sub but I don't know how sharp he is defensively and arguably Gakpo just for his height defending set pieces is useful.

That’s where we differ it seems. We were well on top second half and should have gone (like Arsenal did, even though they have a six point cushion at the top) for a win…like a Liverpool side in the ascendancy would be expected to.

Protecting Slot’s ten game unbeaten streak and position is not the priority.

Put me at left wing last night and I could win you free kicks if that's all you fucking want

I don't mind the negativity, there are plenty of reasons to be negative. I do mind that irrational positivity is derided right now but irrational negativity is fine.

I do mind the fact that there's a universal acknowledgement that we are shit and a prevalent feeling was that we'd be beaten, and a significant amount of people thought it would be embarrassing. Then, we compete in a game, give ourselves in my mind our best platform to win it given the players we had, show a really good performance in the second half, and now we are bitching about how we didn't do more? If we are shit and the team is broken, and it is, then adjust your expectations. If you expect us to be humiliated and we compete and get a result, smile?

I'm far more annoyed about our lack of ambition in other games when we had the ball. Given that our subs have generally made our team worse, and how our team have responded disastrously to any slight change in momentum, I don't think slot did anything wrong not changing.

Join me. I'm a grey army. I feel like what we are. We are 4th in a bad league after losing a bunch of games. I simultaneously think slot is a big part of breaking this team, but the fact that he has turned it around from entirely broken and even survived so far is worthy of note. I don't think many of us understand the pressure he was under. I think the football we play is awful at times and bores me to death but that we'd have been better off if he had started playing for 0-0s far earlier in our horrible slide, as that is what I was screaming for. I think if you can't enjoy us these scraps it's going to be a long season because I don't see us winning anything.

I disagree. We got tonked by PSV at home - a team we were expected to dominate possession against and beat. Games against Real, Inter etc allow us to be more defensively rigid and give up more of the ball. It's the same issues. If the onus is on us to attack and create, we'll largely come unstuck.
