Eto'o to City..

Manchester City's chances of signing Samuel Eto'o appeared to have increased last night when the Barcelona president Joan Laporta admitted that the Catalan club was open to offers for the Cameroon striker.

Eto'o has only one year left to run on his contract at the Camp Nou and Barcelona have not yet offered him an extension. There are no plans to present him with a new deal and Eto'o is understood to be prepared to see out his contract and leave as a free agent at the end of the season.

He would be able to negotiate formally with other clubs from 1 January 2010. But with Barcelona searching for a new striker, both the coach Pep Guardiola and sporting director Txiki Beguiristain believe that it would be beneficial for him to depart this summer.

Laporta, who personally signed Eto'o and has been his greatest defender, particularly during the Cameroonian's clashes with the Brazilian Ronaldinho, has accepted that it is time for him to move on – and his comments, during which he described Eto'o as "much sought after" can be read as a thinly-disguised call for clubs to prepare bids for the striker.

He said: "It would be lovely if Samuel could finish his career here. But the market is very dynamic and there could be surprises in store. Eto'o is one of those players for whom you get important offers."

This is the second time Barcelona have attempted to offload the Cameroonian. Last summer Guardiola announced publicly that it would be "better" for the striker to move on and the club searched for a buyer, even going so far as to open talks with a club in Uzbekistan. No clubs came in with a satisfactory offer and eventually Eto'o stayed. Having won over Guardiola and his team-mates, who pleaded with the manager to give him a second chance, he finished the season with a treble and 30 La Liga goals.

Contemplating losing a guaranteed 30+ goals a season? Risky move by Barca.

If City don't blow everyone out the water, we could well have a chance of landing the best strike-duo in the world.

Given who we've been linked to so far, I'd be all for it!

if they lose Eto'o, they'll get Villa or Benzema.

Yup.

Villa would be their best bet.

Expensive summer for Barca if they go for Ribery as well - have they got £70-80M to spend?

I guess the CL money will help but still...

Where does it say that he's interested in a move to City? Has he ever been quoted saying that would be his prefered destination?

I HIGHLEY doubt he'll go there. He seems to have some ambition.

I don't remember Gareth Barry or Robinho whoring themselves out to City either.

I'd be happy if we spunked out entire summer budget on Eto'o. He's fucking ace. I'll be gutted if he goes to Citeh.

Robinho said Chelsea in his City press conference, he wasnt sane at all. He desperatly wanted a move away.
Barry got offered double his wages, and clearly opted the money move. It was only us out of the top 4 that were intererted, and we pulled out due to his wage demands.

Eto'o is a League winner, CL winner and is already paid big bucks. I think he wants to win more throphies, thats why I highley doubt he'll go there if other big clubs are interested.

Or maybe Ibra?

Most probably Villa who is arguably even more effective than Eto'o!

doesn't matter who they have, weakest link - the manager.

Yep. He's rubbish tactically and hasn't got a proper backroom staff.

I can't get over the fact that a club would be so prepared and seemingly unconcerned about losing one of the best strikers in the world and their best striker over the last 5 years - especially coming off the most successful season in history.

Are his off field problems this serious??

It is odd.

Didn't Guardiola come out and say that he was wrong to try and sell Eto'o early in the season?
