Europa League 4th Qualifying Round Draw

At one point I lived on Wheatfield Place, which literally backs on to Tynecastle.

First game I went to in Scotland was at Tynecastle.

Hearts have produced some excellent players over the years - probably more so than any other team in Scotland,

.... But they're not capable of beating Liverpool.

Hearts manager John McGlynn is wary of a Liverpool backlash when the sides meet in the Europa League at Tynecastle on Thursday.

The Anfield giants, under new boss Brendan Rodgers, slumped to a 3-0 defeat in their Premiership opener at West Brom on Saturday afternoon. However, Liverpool have already breezed past Belarusian side Gomel in continental competition this term to set up a meeting with the Jambos.

McGlynn has potent memories of his side's capitulation against another English outfit, Tottenham, at the same stage of the Europa League last term. He said: "Liverpool losing 3-0 may not be the best thing in the world for us, they may come up here looking to make amends for that."

He added: "If we lose goals against Inverness then you are liable to lose goals against Liverpool.

"We have to make life much more difficult for Liverpool and try to go to Anfield with a lead.

"We have to stick together and build on the things we did well against Inverness. The first goal, for example, was excellent.

"Everybody knows that the tie against Tottenham last year was finished very early, we need to make sure we are still in the tie going into the second leg."

Fucking heeeeeeeeeeeeell, forgot we had this game

He needs to play shelvey or i'll hissy fit

Hearts manager John McGlynn fars captain Marius Zaliukas may be ruled out of Thursday’s Europa League clash with Liverpool after being forced off in the draw with Inverness CT.

Zaliukas left the field just before the break with a dead leg and McGlynn says the knock may force the Lithuanian to miss the game against Brendan Rodgers’ side.

He said: “Marius has a dead leg, high up on his thigh. It doesn't look good, although it is very early at the moment.

"If it is severe then I wouldn't think he will have a chance of playing on Thursday but I have not had that confirmed by the physio."

The 50-year-old saw his team throw away a two-goal lead against ten-man Inverness.

The former Raith boss felt his team had been naïve in failing to kill off their opponents.

McGlynn said: "We were keen to get the third goal, we had opportunities to do that but lo and behold we show some naivety late on and the ball ends up going across the face of goal and ends up in the net.

"We have massive game on Thursday so there is no point crucifying people. Everyone is disappointed and knows we should have won the football match."

JOHN McGLYNN will try to get inside Brendan Rodgers’ head this week – by swotting up on Swansea as well as Liverpool.

The Jambos boss is hoping his opposite number, whose side crashed 3-0 at West Brom yesterday, will still be trying to feed his philosophy to a new group of players at Anfield.

And he insists catching them early at Tynecastle is Hearts’ best hope of winning the Battle of Britain clash.

McGlynn said: “We’re hoping this is a good time to play Liverpool.

“The new manager is still trying to get ideas across to his players and they might need time to buy in to them and get them 100 per cent right.

“Because of that we’ll study footage of Swansea to see how they played last season.

“There’s no doubt Rodgers got them playing attractive football and it looks like he’ll try to get Liverpool to play in the same attractive way.

“But does he have the right type of players there? And will it be too early for it to happen?

“These are things we have to hope are to our advantage.

“We need to make life hard for Liverpool, make them nervous – and that won’t happen if they score an early goal.

“When Hearts played Spurs last year the tie was dead after 20 minutes.

“It was such an anti-climax – a huge, massive game and, before you realised it, the chance was gone.

“We’ve got to give the Hearts fans an opportunity to be up for the tie and give them something early in the game to raise it even higher.

“This is Liverpool, probably one of the top 10 clubs in the world historically.

“It is a rare event for a team of that standard to come and play at Tynecastle.

“Everyone and their dog will want to be at the game.

“We need to give our supporters something to sing about. We’ll get in their faces and not let them settle.”
