Fernando Torres

The goal in that compilation against Derby, I think, where Stevie put him through with a 50 yard-er, that he calmly clips over the keeper... I could watch it all day long.

It's as beautiful as it is simple. Magnificent pass, peerless finish. On a par with that Beardo - Aldo goal Vs Forest way back when.

Oh, and his song remains my favourite ever...

Walked down O'Connell Street with a four or five year old Alex on my shoulders a million years ago, and over the noise, I could hear her sing it as loud as she could - May have had something in my eye on that one!

For 3 seasons, Fernando Torres was absolutely incredible for Liverpool, scoring 0.84 non-penalty goals per 90. That's better than Henry (0.73), Kane (0.72), Shearer (0.71), Aguero (0.71), Suarez (0.69) or van Nistelrooy's (0.58) three best consecutive Premier League seasons.

And to add further context, Salah has 'only' managed 0.73 at Liverpool over two seasons. The big difference, of course, is injuries - Salah has already played more league minutes for Liverpool than Torres did in his first three seasons.

Great stats Brizzle.

I taught my daughter that song before she was 4. She could sing it note perfect. When he left I felt like what that woman with the Salah song singing Parrot will feel if Salah fucks off. Taken a lot of forgiving.

Loved him when he was in his prime for us. Tarnished when he left for sure, but what a player. The understanding he and Gerrard had at the time was fantastic. Loved to have seen him alongside Suarez.

Thanks for posting that doc. I have said it a few times, when we signed him, for me it was like signing the young Ronaldo from Brazil. I had seen him a few times for Athletico and a few times for Spain prior to him joining us but knew he was on a potential super star level. I was shocked we managed to sign him. But I suppose at the time players from Spain of actual Spanish origin had not established themselves on the world stage just yet, so the big rich clubs may not have gone for him. Imagine us signing Mbappe and you get the measure.

Looking at that vid, i forgot the many types of goals he scored for us. None of our current lot could score some of those types of goals you see on the vid...he was just fucking amazing.

The best striker I've ever seen play for us. He was freakishly good at finishing, tall, skillful, agile, strong, very quick, two footed and extremely pacey. He could and maybe should have had a career to rival Messi and Ronaldo but injuries ruined him and, despite how much it hurt at the time, the club certainly cashed out at the right time.

I didn't hate him for wanting to leave us. He had every right to. It was signing for Chelsea that hurt and the reason why millions of reds cheered when Agger smashed his elbow into his face.

He was good, but he was no Messi or Ronaldo. Come on now.

I think Suarez was a better player. I loved Torres, though.

Suarez was better for his all around play. For a short time though, torres' star shone brightest. Everything he touched was magic. The purest finishing. A strikers striker, none of this operating from the wing, or the hole. None of this defending from the front. I'll be up here... Have fun watching me bang them in.

I'll never completely fall in love with a player again, thanks to torres. Saved me a lot of grief.

The fact that he went to Chelsea is the hurtful thing but in truth we were in a fucking mess and he knew it....

A certain amount of consolation can be drawn from the fact that he was already injured enough that his best days were behind him, his peak had gone and it was a hell of a peak.

Successive bad injuries while on international duty... that was the end of his brilliance, and he was startlingly brilliant. It’s a shame that he went to the enemy but he was already done and he was never as good for them as he had been for us...

That raises a certain amount of forgiveness in my heart as does the fact that under HnG we were not on an upward trajectory at all and he had, I’m sure, been over-sold his prospects of winning stuff at LFC. We were shit when he left and we weren’t getting better were we...

I loved Torres. I saw a couple of those goals live as well, but Suarez is still the best player I have seen in a red shirt.

In the barren spell without winning the title we have had some spectacular strikers and Torres certainly falls into that category, he was spectacular.

Fowler at his prime was technically lethal but never FULLY recovered after doing his knee away at Everton, injured before his peak age arrived.

Owen had pace which was ludicrous and exciting, the Mbappe of the day, even after repeated hamstring injuries he was still useful but another player who’s peak came early in his career.

Torres was sensational until international injuries and horrific club management moved him on. After the miracle of Istanbul we improved and if HnG had not been lying criminals things might have gone far better...

Suarez was clearly insane and the most competitive player I’ve ever seen, he gave fear to opponents he was that good.

We’ve very rarely been short of brilliance up front we’ve been a lucky bunch of fans even in our barren years.

Woy fucking Hodgson however.... I will never forgive that...

Torres at his peak was simply incredible, I thought the spite shown towards him after he left was totally disproportionate compared to how some others have been treated. He was a world class player at a circus of a club, he did what 99.9% of other players would have done in the same position. Some have left in worse fashion, like Suarez, and get treated like heroes.

The first player I truly loved since Fowler and made me feel 15 years old again as a fan.

That first goal against Chelsea was absolutely magic.

It had been a long time since a striker for us scored a goal like that.

Absolutely loved him.

Having said that, Suarez was better in 13/14 without doubt.

Delighted his career went to shit at Chelsea

We picked Chelsea's pocket by selling him at the then record PL price. He was obviously on the wane with too many injuries. Without pace he is no longer as good. He left us at the right time, in the club's point of view. Love the song we sang for him. Chelsea fans could not match us there.

That last half season with us, he was a shadow of himself. Then we played Chelsea at home and it was like the old Torres was back - he was brilliant. Then he went meh again, then two months later it all become too obvious as to why he had performed so well in that one game

It’s funny watching that now that time has passed... some of those players, no wonder he left!

Poor guy.

Agree about the song, it was also one that my kids loved singing. Wonderful.

And what a superb player he was; we can talk about his decline; his agitation to leave and subsequent unhappiness at Chelsea, but for a few years at Liverpool we saw the best Torres and one of the genuine Anfield striking greats, to go with names like Hunt, Rush, Owen, Fowler, Dalglish, Salah and Suarez.

That's where he belongs, and it's just a shame we didn't win anything big when he was here.

Although, Torres basically carried Liverpool’s attack during that time. His best ever years by far were at Liverpool despite winning nought there.

It wasn't just the last half season. He was the Ghost of Torres Past for pretty much the whole season before that as well. Whatever state the club was in, that soured me on the guy. If you want out, don't down tools in a sulk - man up, leave openly and earn your wages until you go.

That said, I couldn't help a twinge of sympathy when he actually went to Chavski. I don't think I've ever seen a player look so depressed signing for a new club. "What the threepenny FECK have I done?" was written all over him, as it was when we went to their place and beat them a few days later.

The whole team was a shadow of itself. Alonso had gone (for a crocked Aquilani), so had Riera. Instead of upgrading, we’d gone backwards.
