Liverpool hope to secure a deal in January for in-demand Rennes playmaker Sylvain Marveaux to join them on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 24-year-old is in the final year of his current contract and has told Rennes he won't sign a new deal amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille and Monaco.

However, authoritative reports in France say new Liverpool director of football strategy Damien Comolli has been in touch with Marveaux's representatives to set the scene for a formal offer next month.

The attacking midfielder - who can play on the left or as a central playmaker - cannot officially talk to suitors until reaching the last six months of his current contract in January.

His signing would put more pressure on Joe Cole, who has been disappointing since a high-profile free transfer from Chelsea in the summer.

Diminutive Marveaux attracted the plaudits last season but has so far been shunned by the France national team. He has been key in their march to fifth in Ligue 1 this season and they sit just two points behind leaders Marseille.

Don't know much about this guy but the French league overall is getting stronger and stronger imo. There could be some gems to be unearthed and I hope Comolli will prove to be crucial in doing just that.

I think we have enough central playmakers. We need to concentrate on a striker and a winger or two. Then maybe a left back, a defensive midfielder and a centre back. After that we could maybe look at players like this.

How many central playmakers do we really have? If Gerrard plays CM then it pretty much leaves us with just Cole. Besides I think this guy is just as capable of playing on the left.

If we get someone for the left, I want them to be a left winger, not someone "who is capable of doing a job there". We have too many players that can do an average job in lots of positions.

We have Gerrard, Cole and Pacheco. That's more than enough, when we've probably not got a huge amount of money, and we've only got one striker, and no wingers of note.

We also have plenty of other players who can do a job in behind a striker too...

So you know what this guy is like or just assuming?

I don't think we necessarily need touchline hugging wingers though. We just need players that are good enough.

No, I have no idea. I'm just making the logical assumption that he's not a proper winger, when he plays centrally. I want a proper winger.

Looks good in the youtube clip, a mix between a tricky winger and playmaker.

In fact, he looks pretty Marveauxlous!

Good player actually, played mostly as a winger when I've seen him. As for free transfers, this is one of the better one you could get.

Pacey, skillful, young and with some talent. Not Ukranian, ponytailed, shite or Swiss, made of glass and shite.
