Who's everyone's pick to win it now that Nadal is out?

I guess it's Federer's best chance to win and equal Sampras's Grand Slam record. Who would have thought it?

Won't be surprised if it's not one of the usual suspects as the French Open tends to have unexpected winners, pre-Nadal.

Maybe del Potro or Verdasco I think.

Davydenko knocked Verdasco out mate.

Murray out against a very impressive Gonzalez.
He's not ready yet for clay.
Federer will have a tough way to the final with Monfils and possibly Del Potro in semis.
Hopefully he can do it.

Monfils, guy on PTI (pardon the interruption) has so much fun with that name, that he got me loving it too 🙂

I actually hope Federer wins tomorrow, if he does he'll cry like a little girl receiving a pony at christmas.

Greatest Tennis Player? Hard to call... There was a 5 year stretch when he was unrivalled really.

He's up there mate, seriously he is, whether he's the best is debatable, but you simply have to put him in any argument about it.

Yup... However had he had competition between 2002-2006 perhaps he'd have won a few less. After Agassi retired, no one could match him until the new generation came through.

Not Rogers fault admittedly, he was ruthless. Greatest player ever will always be disputed, some people refuse to acknowledge Pistol Pete as the greatest because he never won the French.

Full credit to Federer for an amazing achievement.

That said, it's hard to compare him to other players and claim he's the greatest ever - different times, different competitors etc. He is definitely one of the greatest though.

Best Tennis player of all time.
No debate about that anymore.

Ha ha ha... Patriotic I'll give you that, but the way you've just dismissed Sampras & Borg is laughable.

I've never dismissed them, I was a huge Sampras fan.
He was on par with them, now he's above

It's open to debate, he's very very close to being the best ever in my opinion, another 2 should do it.

He had it easy for most of it. Fair play to him he's a quality, quality player.

If he keeps it up yeah he'll be the best, but for me, not quite yet.

Depends on how you look at it mate. I would say he had it easy because he was so freaking good.

Whose to say he dismissed them? I'm well aware of the feats of both Sampras and Borg but I still say Federer is the best there's been. And I'm not from Switzerland.

The words "No debate"...

Chill Del. Your entitled to your opinion, but I stated by Federer is still for me "On Par" earlier.

Name quality players in Sampras' era
Name quality players in Federer's era

Nadal is the only realy player that you can say was 'quality' - Pete had Agassi, Becker, Stich and a whole host of 'almosts' (Edberg, Ivanesevic, Chang etc).

Sampras played in a far far more competitive era ... He dominated that era, bar the clay court. Though as I told Lech on FB, this is a Jordan vs Kobe debate tbh - matter of opinion.

I think a lot of people hold Federer's domination against him. There are a lot of very talented players who have been made to look ordinary by one staggeringly good tennis player.

Agassi was still going strong when Federer burst onto the scene. I watched him systematically dismantled by Federer on a number of occasions. In fact, if it weren't for Federer he may have played on for longer than he did. Ditto Sampras.

When it comes down to it though, I have to confess that I'm a lot more sympathetic to an all-court game. As great as Sampras was he didn't have so many facets to his game. Federer has a plan A, a plan B and pretty much a plan for every other letter of the alphabet. He invents new shots almost every time he steps out on court. Sampras was so imperious at what he did well that he rarely needed to change his plan. He was pretty much unplayable on grass. I think the modern game began to catch up with him towards the end though. I don't think anybody would get away with serving and volleying on both serves all the way through a competition these days.

Of course it's an entirely personal thing. For me, the fact that Federer has managed to tie up the career grand slam is significant. Plus I just love watching him play.

EDIT: I just noticed that you included Edberg in your list of 'almosts'. A bit of a kick in the teeth for the best volleyer the game has ever seen and a worthy champion in his own right.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Edberg but I didn't think he was in that 'class' of player overall. That he was the best volleyer, I agree.

Congrats Federer.

Now, do go on to win Wimbledon to be all alone at the top when it comes to winning Grand Slams.

As for the debate on whether he's the best ever, my opinion is that he is.

He was easily up there with the best. Him and Becker are almost impossible to separate. Both former world number 1's, both picking up 6 grand slams each. I always loved it when they clashed at Wimbledon. Some real classics.
