Friday Night Lights - Saints (A) - Pre Match

I read you old people talk about the complexities of watching a football game due to your families and wonder if you're in a relationship, or some kind of indentured servitude
Heh. I'm lucky, some of my mates have to miss matches cos their wives arrange shit without checking. One of my mates wife arranges family outings for every weekend for either the full Saturday or Sunday with no regard to the fixture schedule whatsoever.

I was asked to what are we doing for mother’s day and answered watching Liverpool v spurs. I never miss a game. Even when she is invited to stuff she asks are we doing something on whatever date I check the fixtures before telling her if we’re busy.

Over the many centuries that the English language has changed and developed, a particular phrase has formed to deal with this scenario.

"Nah, you're alright love"

We have a family calendar we use to check if we're busy & add events to. I shared the fixture list to it.

Does she use it?
Yep. Took about six months & a fair few arguments where I just refused to do some things cos she hadn't put them on the calendar & so I'd arranged to do something else or there was a match on, but it worked eventually.

Works both ways though tbf, cos means I can check it before I arrange anything so I don't double book when should be doing family shit.

Linked the school calendar to it as well which means it's a big incentive for her to use it.

We still have the classic gruffalo family planner on the kitchen wall, but only cos it's easy to glance at & store tickets & invites in, once big tablets drop in price I'll replace it with a kiosk tablet to do the same job & more.

Time change is beneficial for me in that regard. Most matches are Saturday/Sunday mornings here so not usually too many conflicting events. I did have to tell her to cancel a weekend canoe trip last spring because of the Champions League final.

I'm not looking forward to the conversation when letting her know our first canoe trip of this season conflicts with the Wolves match on the last day of the season.

I'd probably get a lot more done if I had one of these sergeant major wives who actively try to make your lives worse like you bunch of dickheads. Thank god I don't want to get a lot more done.

I make sure the wife's phone/calendar has the fixtures on it so she can plan around the games. Works a treat.

Cheers Bertrand for the motivational talk for Salah.

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has expressed his hopes to stop Liverpool star Mohamed Salah by exploiting his weakness when the two teams meet on Friday night.
Liverpool hosted Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday where they grabbed a crucial victory that saw heavy involvement from Salah whose header was parried away by Hugo Lloris but bounced off Alderweireld’s leg into the back of the net.
The Reds currently occupy the first place in the English Premier League on temporarily basis as Manchester City have a game in hand, while the Saints are just two places above the drop zone but have won their last two matches.
“It’s always good to play against the best players. That is why you play and it’s the ultimate aim,” Bertrand told Sky Sports News.
“I won’t change my preparations. I’m just looking forward to seeing his strengths and seeing his weaknesses and trying to nullify some and exploiting the others.”
“It’s important for both teams. They are fighting for the Premier League with a chance to create history for their first title in so long. Equally we need the points and are fighting for different reasons. It should be a nice competitive game and I’m really looking forward to it,” he concluded

Grounds for divorce right there !

I have been over in the UK & Belgium for 2 weeks, spare time was very limited indeed but I met up with an old friend who I found out has now become a Liverpool supporter - even has a membership card and flies over to watch them 2-3 times a month (he lives in Spain). He gets all the top tickets to London clubs' matches via his working connections (offered me a ticket to Arsenal vs Newcastle but that wasn't for for me, even though my wife was pushing me to go) so I'm going to be hanging on his coat tails if we make another CL final !

I'm desperate for Ox to get on the bench for this one - i think he'd give such a lift to the team by being in the squad and then getting onto the pitch. Sticking to my prediction that we use the CL games to get him up to better match fitness but would love him to get 10 mins or so here.

If Clyne was around we could have fielded this side:

------------------Becker
[bcolor=#ff0000]Clyne[/bcolor]-----[bcolor=#ff0000]VD[/bcolor]-----------[bcolor=#ff0000]Lovren[/bcolor]-------Robbo

--------------------Fabs
----------[bcolor=#ff0000]Lallana[/bcolor]---------[bcolor=#ff0000]Oxlade[/bcolor]

Salah-----------Firmino------------[bcolor=#ff0000]Mané[/bcolor]

[bcolor=#ff0000]RED[/bcolor] being former Southampton players obviously

Yeh, a ten minute cameo would be great for everyone I feel.

Southampton are a counter pressing side under this manager, not dissimilar to the way we usually play.

As such our midfield needs to be made up of players who can deal with that by acting quickly & retaining the ball withe rby holding it, passing it accurately or finding space.

That means Fabinho will definitely start, he won't have to run as much as the midfield did against Spurs so that won't be an issue (that's the reason he didn't start at the weekend I'm sure, he was knackered with 10 to go in the Bayern match despite coming on as sub), that's one spot.

Gini would be guaranteed cos he's so good at retaining the ball, although the sheer amount of minutes he's played means there's a chance klopp could rest him, I'll say he doesn't though, so that's two spots.

We have Hendo, Lallana, Keita & Shaq left to choose from.

Keita is easily the next best technically & should be guaranteed to get in for this match in an ideal world, but given his indifferent performances I can't see Klopp trusting him after so long out & think it'll be next season before we get the most out of him. Hendo is good at retaining possession & can switch it, but we don't have to play it safe or run as much as against spurs so unless he's in for Gini (a definite possibility) then I think third spot goes to Lallana. Lallana is good at retaining possession under pressure, he can find space in tight places & can pick a pass.

Shaq, not trusted currently, but regardless, not the player I'd pick against a counter pressing side except perhaps in the last quarter against tired legs to exploit space.

Fabinho - Gini/Hendo - Lallana

I'm hoping we can somehow find a way to get Gomez back in for Matip, but can't see him just dropping Matip when every match is so important, perhaps if we haven't got our backs against the wall against Porto he'll get on the pitch.

As such I think the back five & front three will be the same as always.

Someone else listened to the Echo tactics podcast 🙂

Yep. They speak a lot of sense, despite it being so fucking dry. I was made up cos watching Southampton the last couple of weeks I kept seeing loads of similarities to us in the way they play.

They ignored Lallana completely as an option though, which is mad, cos he's clearly a massive option against Southampton for me & I wouldn't be at all surprised if klopp started him.
