Brad Friedel will re-join Liverpool after rejecting offers from West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa to remain in the Midlands.

The veteran keeper has agreed a two-year deal with Kenny Dalglish to be Pepe Reina's understudy.

Waving goodbye: Friedel will re-join Liverpool after turning down a deal to stay at Villa

Villa offered Friedel, 40, a deal on less money but with a greater bonus for appearances.

______________

Excellent if true. Still a class keeper and fewer games could keep him going for another 3 or 4 years.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Good to see him back. Always liked him.
I believe this confirms that Pepe is here to stay (it probably means we're not after a first keeper as Friedl is just a backup until Gulaci is ready).

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

I was just wondering about goalkeeping options behind Reina a few days ago and realised that I didnt have much confidence in Gulacsi and Hansen. Friedel joining would be great. Big Liverpool fan too.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

I think this might be a stop gap signing to replace Pepe.

BOOOOOO!!!! HISSSSSSS!!!!! BOOOOOOO!!!!

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Well he hasn't signed a new contract that's been with him for months now, and I don't think the sums for what MarkMc says is our likely dealings add up unless there's a player leaving for 20m+.

Who else could we sell ?

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Hasn't he been making the right noises about staying?

Aquilani ( 10-12M), Jones (1M), Insua(2M), Konchesky(1M), Agger(5M), Cole(5M), Jovanovic(3M), Poulsen(1M), N'Gog(5M). 30+Mil right there and I think I may have been conservative.

Pepe has definitely sounded like he's happy and staying, even going on about how his wife and child love living in Liverpool.

maybe your sums/assumptions aren't correct? we could just be planning to spend more than you anticipate.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

He must be a MASSIVE fan of LFC because he's basically waved his playing career goodbye with this move. He's 40 but is still capable of being first choice keeper in half the teams in the top flight.
Now he'll be playing in the Carling Cup, and that's about it. Reina's hardly ever been injured, has he?

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Maybe he's finding it getting harder playing every day at the age of 40, most players of that age do find it difficult, even keepers.

The thought of the same or similar wages at a club you like, yet still get to train & play occasionally would be very tempting for most players of that age I'd imagine.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

He is a massive Liverpool fan. Heard him talking about how delighted he was to join (first time round) on the BBC some years back. With the no European competition next season, I cant imagine him getting much playing time, if any at all.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Where's the 48 goalkeepers that Rafa has bought?

Can't one of them sit on the bench?

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Friedel is a boss keeper and person.

Good signing and one for the future as well as I reckon he's got good coaching abilities too.

The Hungarian lad Gulacsi has been doing so under the King, but he's still pretty young and they probably want him to play more games than he'd be likely to get as Pepe's understudy next season.

Glad Friedel's back. He suffered from being at the club at a bad time, and has proven his quality since then.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

I wonder if Brad was offered a job in a coaching capacity with us after he retires?

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Gulacsi would benefit from going out on loan next season.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Not official yet but would be a sensible option for us

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

He's 40 so there's no way hes peps replacement, he doesn't even begin to meet the fsg player criteria so I imagine he'll be on the coaching staff by summer 2012.

FFS, the 'moneyball' thing is doing my head in. It's value for money, not age alone. If thy feel they get vfm on a 2 year deal with a 40 year old it is still viable.

Yeah, I think that strategy is more about the first team, this is a sensible move. We've overpaid for young keepers before who've inevitably gotten fed up after a season or two of warming the bench, this gives us experience and assurance in reserve.

Not sure why you quoted me there.

As you did though, he is 40, he's hardly going to get a long term contract, nor is he Stoney broke, therefore ita fair to assume we've offered him something beyond sitting on the bench for the next 12 months...

By the same token, rumour has it that we've offered more than villa and west brom, I'm sure we could find a cheaper benchwarmer, except they wouldn't have the attachment to the club or possibly the ability.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

There are several reasons for this I think.

To be honest I think the paramount reason is to show Reina that we're not going to put up with any nonsense over the next 3 months; he is also expererienced back-up.

Gulacsi isnt good enough now, and Brad Jones will probably not be in the mental shape to be a good backup for a long time, even if he did have the ability, which he probably doesnt.

I have a lot of sympathy for him, tbh..the figure of 2.3 million isnt a massive sum, but perhaps it wasnt smart to get someone in with so much going badly for him.

Are all the legions of keepers we had gone?

What's that about? I can remember some issue vaguely.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

doesnt his kid have lukemia or something?
think it woulda been a bit harsh to say to him "yeah we would take ya, but uv got a sick kid, so you can fuck right off"

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Oh yeah, all coming back now. Pretty grim.

Best thing Liverpool can do for him is getting him off to a team that'll give him 1st team football. I'm sure he'd prefer to play than sit on a bench worrying about his kid.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

So the solution to the problem of having a goal keeper with distracting off field issues is Brad Friedel.

Anyone know how Friedels football schools are doing?

Tip - google Brad Friedel bankrupt
