Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool.....NOOOOOOooooot

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

I agree Friedel would be an excellent choice as back-up keeper, if he is prepared at this late stage of his career to settle for the role of Pepe's understudy. You don't want your back-up keeper to be an up-and-coming guy because they will constantly be restless and looking at first-team opportunities elsewhere.

Friedel is a top keeper and I sometimes wonder if it would have been better if we could have hung on to him when he was at Anfield and saved ourselves a lot of heartache with Westerveld and Dudek.

He's 40 so there's no way hes peps replacement, he doesn't even begin to meet the fsg player criteria so I imagine he'll be on the coaching staff by summer 2012.

FFS, the 'moneyball' thing is doing my head in. It's value for money, not age alone. If thy feel they get vfm on a 2 year deal with a 40 year old it is still viable.
Not sure why you quoted me there.

As you did though, he is 40, he's hardly going to get a long term contract, nor is he Stoney broke, therefore ita fair to assume we've offered him something beyond sitting on the bench for the next 12 months...

By the same token, rumour has it that we've offered more than villa and west brom, I'm sure we could find a cheaper benchwarmer, except they wouldn't have the attachment to the club or possibly the ability.
I think you will find that Brad is stoney broke, or close enough to it.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

The academy, in Friedel’s native Ohio, was opened in 2007 as a non-profit venture.

Well, he's achieved that alright.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Albion are ready to step in and sign veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel if he fails to agree a new contract with Villa.

The Baggies have contacted the American’s agent as they weigh up their goalkeeping options for summer transfer deals.

And head coach Roy Hodgson is ready to extend the former Liverpool and Blackburn goalkeeper’s remarkable Premier League career if he opts to leave Villa Park.

But any deal could hinge on whether Albion are willing to offer the former United States international the two-year deal he craves. Liverpool are also reported to be interested.

Villa have placed a one-year contract extension on the negotiating table, believing a year-by-year approach is the best option for a player who celebrated his 40th birthday a week ago.

But, while he would be happy to remain with Villa, sources have hinted Friedel would consider moving on in exchange for extra financial security.

His first-team future at Villa is also in doubt with the club expected to step up their interest in England international Robert Green following the relegation of his current club, West Ham, to the Championship.

A loss of guaranteed first-team football could also change Friedel’s outlook, as he looks to extend his record of 275 consecutive Premier League appearances.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Tottenham are making a last-ditch effort to tempt Brad Friedel into joining them ahead of Liverpool.

The Aston Villa keeper, 40, has a two-year contract on offer at Liverpool
, but Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp wants the American to battle Carlo Cudicini and Heurelho Gomes.

Cudicini agreed a one-year extension on Wednesday while Gomes is a target for his old club PSV, though the Dutch club may struggle to raise the funds to buy him.

Pepe Reina is established at Liverpool and a move there would end Friedel's Premier League record of 275 consecutive games.

West Bromwich Albion have also made Friedel an offer while Aston Villa have offered a bonus-led deal.

Tottenham are also competing with Liverpool for Genk goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, 19.

Don't they have scouts of their own ? any player we are interested in somehow spurs put their noses in!!!!

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Thibaut Courtois is a great name though.

'Polite Theo'. A nice chap, surely.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

At FIRST glance, Liverpool's pursuit of Brad Friedel looks like an attempt to improve their ex-players' Masters five-a-side team.

Offering a two-year deal to a 40-year-old represents one of the stranger decisions of a new regime which, not so long ago, was supposedly intent on recruiting only young players.

But once you get beyond Friedel's age, the fact Liverpool have been linked with a decent back-up goalkeeper who will play rarely should be a cause for hearty celebration at Anfield.

The number two stopper has been one of the most criminally neglected roles at the Merseyside club for over a decade. It is a position directly responsible for costing the club the chance to win trophies.

Certainly since Pepe Reina demanded an understudy, there has been a who's who of the inept, the ineligible and the downright idiotic.

Should he sign, Friedel will represent a return to some kind of stability whereby an injury to Reina will not cause an inevitable downward spiral.

Some of the keepers entrusted with the role have been comical.

The current incumbent is Brad Jones. A likeable enough chap it seems, but his first duties were against Northampton Town in the Carling Cup last season, when each shot at Liverpool's goal prompted masterful displays of agility in the art of avoiding the flight of the ball.

In fairness to Jones, he looked like Ray Clemence compared to some of his predecessors.

One of the worst Liverpool transfers... actually, scratch that, one of the worst transfers in the history of English football was the purchase of French keeper Charles Itandje.

Itandje had gone for a trial at Everton in the summer of 2007, where David Moyes watched him fail to make a save and politely informed him he would not be pursuing any interest.

The player's agent promptly offered him to Liverpool, who were short of cover. With remarkable haste, Itandjje was handed a four-year contract.

Mild concern about the justification for the deal turned into full-blown bewilderment when Itandje turned up for his first day's training without any gloves and had to request a set of football boots.

His last two appearances for Liverpool were in the FA Cup. He made the Havant & Waterlooville attack look as potent as Lionel Messi on turbo power.

The warning was not heeded when he was selected against Barnsley in the next round. Every visiting shot was as good as a goal and Liverpool went out of the cup.

Had Reina, or even a keeper of Conference standard competence, played that day Liverpool would have won.

A week later, Itandje was dropped for good, with Rafa Benitez citing the "psycholological damage" of the severe Press criticism he'd received ("Itandje isn't just an accident waiting to happen, he ought to be wearing an ambulance siren on his head," was how the News of the World reported his performance).

Itandje, remarkably, was still on the Anfield books until his contract was finally paid up last January. He was last in the news when he was disciplined for fooling around at the service commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

Incredible as it sounds, while Itandje represents the height of incompetence at least he was, unlike one of his predecessors,(sadly) eligible.

At the height of the war between Benitez and Rick Parry about whether every single deal recommended by then trusted chief scout Eduardo Macia should be sanctioned, Nikolay Mihaylov was signed first and the club board asked if it was OK to buy him later.

The first problem was that the Bulgarian had no work permit and, at 19, no pedigree which suggested he would get one in England.

The second problem was that his medical, held AFTER he signed, suggested he had problems with his vision.

Club doctors reported scenes of giddy euphoria during their eye tests
with the Bulgarian shouting "I can see, I can see" as if he had been cured of a lifetime's affliction. The miracle cure? A pair of contact lenses.

Sadly, after one half in a pre-season game in 2007, fears about Mihaylov's eligibility proved well founded. He was sent on loan to FC Twente and never returned.

Add to these lists keepers of the dubious calibre of Patrice Luzi (a keeper who during Gerard Houllier's reign was so erratic Liverpool succeeded in securing an emergency loan for Paul Jones when Jerzy Dudek was injured), Pegguy Arphexad, Diego Cavelieri and the now forgotten Daniele Padelli (one dreadful game against Charlton before disappearing for good) and it becomes clear how bereft Liverpool have been in an under-rated department.

Friedel's possible Anfield comeback does not represent a long-term vision. But in demonstrating the here and now is often as important as the what may be years down the line, it could prove one of the wisest transactions Liverpool make this summer.

The article above makes me wonder why Rafa trusted Eduardo Macia despite his mistakes in scouting targets .

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

The article does conveniently ignore Carson and Dudek though.
The perma-injured Kirkland was understudy to Dudek before that too.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Martin Hansen too, Westerveld.

We've really had a load of rubbish in goal for a long time

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Some of the others have admittedly been pants but that's way harsh on the Dude and Westerveld.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Dudek and Westerveld were both great keepers but didn't have the required mental strength. You want a keeper who can shrug off his mistakes. Pepe seems to have a rock-solid ego . . . . touch wood! 😉

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Perhaps their definition of a no. 2 was one that's cheap yet able to step up when needed, instead of one who's brought to challenge. The costs of Kirkland, Dudek and Carson probably ruled them out of the running.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Is that last article above true?!

If so, Rafa wants fucking shooting in the nuts for not doing something about it & the scout shooting in the nuts then the head.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Brad will happily sit on our bench for a few years and not complain, which is important. He's a good profesional, a good keeper, and so long as he gets his money, they'll be no problem.

However saying it could be one of the 'wisest transactions we make this summer' is absurd.

Not if Reina gets injured with three weeks of the season to go & us sitting in 4th place it isn't.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

Well yeah, but that's a pretty extreme scenario. It has to be said that not having a quality second keeper hasn't cost us much in the past.

Reina's made of the same stuff as Lucas.

Yeah, but I'm fairly fucking sure if he does get injured at any point we don't have adequate cover, so basically he gets injured, there's a good chance we lose points, which isn't good enough if we want to get into a top 4 that will be hard as fuck to break into next season.

Re: Friedl Re-Joins Liverpool

good signing for them, so are we still gonna be looking for a reserve keeper?

We're not signing Friedel so...

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel has agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur on a two-year deal, skysports.com can reveal.

The experienced American had been considering his future over the past few weeks with a host of clubs from both the Premier League and abroad chasing his signature.

Once the 40-year-old had opted not to move back to the continent, where he previously played for Turkish giants Galatasaray, that left him with four options in England.

His current club Villa were keen for him to extend his three-year stint, having played over 100 Premier League games for the club following his switch from Blackburn.

One of his former clubs Liverpool also made him an offer, whilst West Bromwich Albion also offered him the chance to stay in the Midlands.

But, after mulling over his options, Friedel has now opted to accept Harry Redknapp's offer of a move to White Hart Lane.

"Brad has really enjoyed his time there, the fans and staff have been exceptional, especially Paul Faulkner, and I know Brad will wish Villa nothing but success."

Friedel, still considered one of the best goalkeepers in England, will now move to Tottenham on a two-year deal with the transfer being finalised on 1st July when his Villa contract expires.

Hectic
Friedel's agent Tony McGill confirmed the deal had been agreed, and he emphasised what a tough decision it was for the keeper to leave Villa.

"Yes, I can confirm Brad has chosen Spurs, but it was a very difficult decision to leave Villa," McGill told skysports.com.

"Brad has really enjoyed his time there, the fans and staff have been exceptional, especially Paul Faulkner [Villa chief executive], and I know Brad will wish Villa nothing but success.

"But Brad felt the time was right to move on, and he has not been short of offers. The last 48 hours have been hectic.

"Brad is now looking forward to moving to Tottenham and pushing for a starting place and helping them back into the top four next season."
