Full Metal Jacquet

I've never seen him play.
I've not watched clips, or read up on him.
My only concern is this - signing young CBs with minimal top flight experience in a proper league doesn't fill me with that much hope.
Granted, there are outliers and he could be great but I just think it's a risk.
Hopefully he'll be great.

I guess we won’t know for another couple of months whether he’s replacing Ibu or a strategic part of succession planning.

Feels to me we’re missing someone in or around their peak years. VVD the wrong side, Gomez the wrong side, this guy still v young & inexperienced, Leoni too. Konate in or around his best years but who knows if he even wants to stay.

Wait...
Virg, Konate (if he signs), Gomez, Italian kid, the Burnley kid, the Senegalese kid and now the French kid.
Are we going 532 next season? Prepping for Alonso ball?
You missed the Austrian kid too, then Arnallo and also Lucky

Am I the only one thinking we got him so we can play 3 at the back next season under Alonso?

I'm no expert but read a bit about him yesterday. Can play in a back 3 and back 4, both right side and left side.
His flexibility is surely something the likes of Xabi will approve.

Modo coukd i volunteer you to make a “next seasons defence” thread sharing some stuff on these signings / kids?

I only half looked at the new teenager defenders we signed. Prob a good discussion to work out how much they’ve all played etc. i wonder which ones might be put straight out on loan.

Also open to anyone else who knows who we’ve signed to fire up 😂

AI could do it

Also, some faith restored in our football operations team. Seems like a possibly good signing for the future.

But, I still don't understand why we sold Quansah. Feels like the manager messed up his man management on that one.

Yes i think it was this more than any view of the player. Bring him home Xabi!

Yes
Who’s Al?

ESPN's resident scout Tor-Kristian Karlsen:

In only his first full year of his top-flight career, Jacquet has emerged as one of the most promising young center backs in France. What makes him stand out at this early stage is how complete he already looks.

His standout traits are his game-reading and calmness
; he is composed on the ball -- seven progressive passes per 90 minutes this season -- and measured when defending. He rarely overcommits, preferring to wait out the attacker and win the ball cleanly, either through an interception or controlled sliding challenge ... which has become a signature feature of his game.

Jacquet moves fluidly, hits top speed quickly and consistently looks like he has an extra gear even when up against the speediest opponents. While at 6-foot-2 he isn't that imposing, he compensates with an impressive vertical leap and his 74% aerial win rate is the best in Ligue 1 among center backs with more than 1,000 league minutes this season.

Just 53 total senior appearances
By way of example, to date, the defender has made just 51 senior league appearances, 17 of which were in Ligue 2 with Clermont. Two more appearances have come in domestic cups, whilst he has also added 29 more in the French national youth sides.

Brilliant on the ball
Of course, a pre-requisite for any modern defender is to be confident on the ball, bringing it out of defence with purpose and finding a teammate with a pass as often as possible, and this is where Jacquet scores highly.

This season alone, he has made 835 successful passes from 918 attempted, for a sensational pass completion rate of 91%.

Over the course of his fledgling career, 2,415 of his 2,719 passes have reached their target, with his stats going as high as 93.6% during his time with Clermont.

Whether short or long passes, in his own half or the opposition's, Jacquet's consistency in this regard is laudable. 286 successful passes into the opponent's territory from 341 attempted this season have seen a career high 95.2% return.

Just two errors leading to goals
Dominant aerially - 30 duels won from 42 attempted - and unwilling to shirk a tackle, given he's also won 70 one-to-ones on the floor from 107 attempted, is also a positive aspect to his play.

As is just two errors made leading to goals, the winning back of possession on 219 separate occasions and the rarity of fouls that he gives away.

Seems like a high energy, front foot defender with excellent anticipation and high aggression. More Konate than Virgil.

Hopefully he dovetails with Leoni?

From the videos I've seen so far :

Height - check.
Virgil passing range - big check.
Passing through the lines - big check.
Pace - hmm difficult to judge a running giraffe.
Tackling - check.
Last gasp tackling - check.
Defensive Heading - check
Anticipation - big check
Ridiculously long legs - check
Technical skills (for a CB) - check
Calmness - check
Goals (corners etc.) - only saw one.
Flexibility - LCB, RCB - check
Strength - check

I have to say he looks damn good.

Leoni from his brief appearance convinced a lot of us he was going to fit right in, lets just hope with a solid rehab he picks up where he was.

Yeah, didn’t think of that. Leoni has looked excellent. Hopefully he’ll be ready in August

Yeah ☺️, didn't include Huijsen cos' he was signed by Simon Francis after Hughes left, but Hughes should have played a part during the tracking process too.

Yeah, read that he played a part in signing him and the tracking process.

But pretty good record with Zabarnyi and hopefully Leoni though.

There's no denying it's a hefty fee for someone with such little experience, but the underlying data and videos all look very impressive. He'll have plenty more games under his belt by the time he joins also. Here's hoping he stays fit and can make impact next year.
