Full Metal Jacquet

Hughes and Edwards are terrible at a lot of things (negotiations, human relations, contracts, squad balance, not leaving things to the last minute) but when they do pay money to sign a player, you know it's a good one.

From the videos I've seen so far :

Height - check.

When Jurgen Klopp joined Liverpool he identified height as being a key factor for a Premiership centre half.

Matip, Virgil, Ibbu and Q were all in the six foot four, or taller, range. With corners and long throws being the current must-have tactic, height is becoming more important than it was ten years ago.

At only six foot two inches, Jacquet would be useful at fullback but little better than Tyrion Lannister in central defence.

Hopefully six foot five inch Leoni will be fully fit for next season.

He'll be fine with Virgil or Lenoi next to him, and 6 foot 2 is plenty of height if a defender is intelligent.

As for combatting the emphasis on set pieces today, well that's a team thing and not something a couple of centre backs can cover all the time. It would be far better having multiple outfield players that are over 6 foot than having a couple of defenders that are 6 foot 4 with midgets around them.

Tarkowski at 6’ 1” has some pretty good heading statistics. But I do agree since moving to two aerially strong centre backs we’ve had a good aerial defence.

I said when Guehi signed for City that we would probably end up paying more money for a lesser player.
We've at least fulfilled half of that prediction here. I'm not going to write the lad off before I've even seen him play, maybe he is the shit, I don't know.
But I do know that promising young centre halves can always become Campbell or Bramble. This signing is a big risk, basically because City stole a march on us and did the Guehi deal when we still needed to secure CL progress before we could risk spending. It continues to do my nut that 115/130 isn't done yet, because they continue to exploit those loopholes to gain advantage over other clubs, even a well-run and wealthy club like us.
And don't get me started on Semenyo, he's going to haunt us for years.

Were we ever really in for Semenyo though? He wasn't in anyone's radar in the off season; not City, not Arsenal, not United, not us. We definitely had the money, as with the other big 3. It's just one of those things and when it's City's turn to go on their spending spree, we can't compete, ditto Guehi.

There were lots of rumours, but even if we weren't, we should have been.
And for me it wasn't about not being able to compete with City, it was competing at that precise moment in time. They took advantage of our hesitancy, whether we were waiting for end of the season for Guehi or waiting on CL progression for both of them.

We are going to need to buy a Joel matip type. And by that I mean an astonishing signing of an experience older fantastic cb for nothing.

Ezpz.

If we include wages and sign on fee I'd wager the Jacquet deal works out much cheaper than Guehi though. He's on 15k a week now.
Leoni is on 55k a week, so Jacquet wont be higher than 75-80k I reckon.

We've also signed the player with the highest potential. Guehi is a very good player but its not the end of the World missing out imho, all things considered.

I'm not arsed about guehi at all.

Not sure Semenyo was ever going to move to Liverpool after the August incident. I fear, we were always going to lose any battle for him, based on that

i wonder about the senesi guy at bournemouth. i’ve barely ever seen him play aside from the match he handballed against us high up the pitch and probably should’ve seen red. but i’d never heard of matip so maybe he’s an option. out of contract this summer…
