Doesn't look like he's signing a new contract any time soon.

I'd argue he's possibly one of the best midfielders in the world when he's in the mood. I also think he'll be really hard to replace for Klopp, so I'd happily lose him on a free than cash in and not strengthen enough

He can do one the Judas...

In seriousness.. if he wants to leave, as long as we get a replacement ive no issue..

Thiago..

Yup. When he is in the zone, he is Iniesta'esque in the sense that it is impossible to take the ball off him.

What's the hold up with Gini?

Wanting more money? Assurances over his spot?

Find it bizarre that talks have stalled with him - doesn't seem to be the kind of player to make negotiations tough.

I wouldn’t be mad if he stays next year and leaves on a free of it boosts our chances of winning #20

Hes on about £90k a week so hes one of our lowest paid players in the first XI despite starting pretty much every game. Hes also 30 later this year so his next contract will be the last of his prime years. He will rightly be trying to get the biggest wage he can before his value declines, the club may not feel he justifies that additional spend when revenues are down.

This £90k a week is a bit of a daft statement isn’t it? In comparison to the rest of the team his is the oldest contract. It’s bound to be lower. We’ve probably offered a 30-50% basic rise. He may have got wind he’d get better basic terms elsewhere.

I do like Wijnaldum a lot but I'm confused by this outpouring of support

During the season, he seems to be one of those getting a ton of abuse on here!

You do have a point though. When talking to fans of other teams they rate Wijnaldum higher than any over our other midfielders.
Every time there's a discussion about who they'd take from our team in midfield, it's almost always Wijnaldum.

Thiago would be a perfect replacement, but I'd really miss Wijnaldum.
Its hard to compare Thiago with Gini, I agree at the same time its difficult to say Thiago is not a fitting replacement. Gini has his own way of playing the game and there are not many of his kind on the planet. Like Milner he is industrious and hard as nails and once that motor is running well you are assured of 3 points in the bag. Maybe Thiago is another Gini in the making which would be super for the club and honestly it would have been great to bring Thiago on board now and have him play alongside Gini in some games this season. What I am not so sure of is why Klopp isn't on the rush with Thiago. I don't know

What would be interesting here is comparing contracts for Gini and that of Hendo. In my opinion the two contracts shouldn't be glaringly different. I think we need Gini as much as we need Hendo.

Agreed, maybe they're not exactly the same but Thiago and Wijnaldum share a lot characteristics.
Where they differ is mainly that Wijnaldum's past as a winger also makes him a formidable runner. So he can move the ball forward in midfield and is great player to have in counter attacks.
Thiago has great close control just like Wijnaldum but is a better passer. I think we'd see more assists from Thiago.
However Wijnaldum also likes to run into the box and is a threat in the air despite his height.
However his finishing, is not that great.

Talk of Wini running down his contract...His 30 now with probably 3 years left at top flight football. Who would make an offer for him and he would agree to go to?

It's probably best for us to keep him for one more year even if he doesn't sign (which looks very likely at this point, sadly). Hopefully the continuity will help us win one more title and Klopp and Edwards will have a whole season to figure out how to replace him. Keeping him will be worth more to us than £20M or whatever we'd get for him at this point.

Let's take a step back here. Have we actually offered Gini a new contract, and what are we offering him?

He can't sign a new contract if he hasn't had one.

Those sorts of details are not usually made public until either a deal ia done or negotiations have broken down and the club wants to make him the bad guy. I dont believe for 1 minute that weve allowed a player of his stature in the squad to get to a point where he can sign a contract for free in 4 months time without us making him an offer. So hes either expecting parity with some of our stars, which he wont get. Or we are lowballing him.

I disagree with the posters saying it would be better to keep him for the season and let him go for free. Klopps very clear he doesnt like any sort of disruptive presence in the squad. He would have one foot out the door from Dec onwards. So wed lose the fee we would expect him to generate and we would reasonable expext his preformance levels to drop. If he wont sign then I think we need to move him on.

I think we are keeping him on hold until we know whether we can get Thiago.

Thiago signs, then we give him a lowball contract

Thiago doesn't sign, then we go all out to lick his balls.
