Roy Hodgson believes his next round of signings for West Brom will not come cheap.

The Baggies manager has been able to exploit the free transfer system to good effect this summer with the signings of defenders Gareth McAuley and Billy Jones on Bosman deals.

Zoltan Gera is also poised to return to the Hawthorns from Fulham on another free, which would constitute some shrewd business by the former Liverpool boss.

Yet, if the Baggies are to recruit a slighter higher calibre of player, Hodgson knows he will be required to open his cheque book.

He has been linked with goalkeepers Ben Foster and Robert Green, who would both be costly replacements for Scott Carson, who signed for Turkish side Bursaspor.
Targets

Reading's Shane Long is also being targeted as a potential strike partner for last season's 15-goal top-scorer Peter Odemwingie.

And Hodgson is determined to add that extra bit of quality to his squad before the season starts.

"If the deal for Gera goes through, that would be a third excellent acquisition, all of which would have been brought in for no transfer money," Hodgson told the Wolverhampton Express and Star.

"That, hopefully, would give us a chance to get the last couple of pieces in the jigsaw of the right quality that might cost us a little bit more than these three have cost us.

"It could be as many as five or six players coming in, all of whom would be great acquisitions, and the total outlay hopefully won't break the bank."

A little bit more than nothing - He's sharper than a sharp thing that's recently been sharpened.

he's trying to build the team in his own image. it will look like this in the end.

Have to say, i was pretty shocked at Roy's impact at the Baggies. I thought they were headed for the Championship when they appointed him.

I still feel an unhealthy level of dislike for the useless (as Liverpool manager) and self-deluded face-rubber.

i really dont mind roy, as long as he's not our manager anyway, always expected him to do well at west brom though, his tactics just seem to work better with average teams (not that we're any barca)

Read the hodgson out thread recently - made funny reading a year later.

Did we want him out in July?

It's no surprise he's doing well at what he's good at.

He did get a bit of a reputation from somewhere after all.

He really is the Master of Low Expectations. Whenever, a team can't go any lower, Roy comes in and sweeps people off their feet. Although it was done in Comedy, I Can't get enough of this clip as it is so on the money

Haha...think I was one of them..

this was what you said KJ - couldn't resist pulling it from the thread 😉

"I would agree, if Roy Hodgson is an up and coming manager who has not managed to win many titles because he did not catch the right break. I think he has had plenty of chances and he has proved to be a steady-eddie type of manager. We may get a better bargain than that, if we looked hard enough. I feel that is exactly Kenny's point of view when he threw his hat in the ring. We don't need a big name manager. We need someone who has the potential to make us a force again. Otherwise it is time wasted. I don't believe in consolidating what is already a shitty position. We need change and definite improvement. Is Roy Hodgson capable of that? I have my doubts. "
