Jordan Henderson has flown to America as Liverpool look to get to the bottom of the captain’s long-standing heel injury.

The Reds midfielder travelled to New York on Monday with club doctor Andy Massey, and will visit New Jersey based orthopaedic specialist Dr James Cozzarelli, as he seeks a solution to the issue which has kept him out of his side’s last three matches.

Henderson will have treatment on the injury, which is causing him discomfort in both his heel and the sole of his foot, in a bid to accelerate his return to action. Crucially, though, the 25-year-old is NOT due to undergo surgery. Henderson limped out of Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth on 17 August, and has been troubled by the problem since.

Liverpool were initially hopeful that the England man would be fit to return to action after the international break, but are now set to be without him for an extended spell, though they have so far been unable to put a timeline on his return. It is hoped that the skipper’s visit to America will both pinpoint the problem and speed up his recovery.

On a base level, Liverpool have won both games Henderson has started this season, and won none of those he’s missed.

No prognosis yet, but a midfield that perhaps looked light when the transfer window closed now looks wafer-thin; not necessarily in terms of bodies, but in terms of versatility and texture.

Where, now, will be the player to drive the team forward from the midfield positions and get close to Christian Benteke? Who, now, will set the tempo for the team, score six goals and create 66 chances, like he did last season if this injury lingers?

Maybe he shouldn't have played injured. Another fuck up by our medical team.

The Echo say ' crucially he's not set to undergo surgery" as if it's a good thing.

I would much prefer a fracture, surgery and recovery, than an unspecified problem of unknown duration.

The heel and sole of foot pain makes me think we're in plantar fascitis territory. That's a disaster injury

He is not set to undergo surgery. Well, he will probably undergo surgery in a month or so after the option not to do it failed. Happened a few times the last couple of years.

Ask Sturridge, Allen and Lucas.

'After a month of tests with machines that go "ding," Dr Alan P Mirschwitz the Third came to the conclusion that the player's problems stem from the fact that he runs funny'.

Doesn't the UK have ANY specialists who can deal with heel problems? Jeremy, there's your first task: retrain an ex-miner to know all there is to know about feet.

I believe it's the only area in which we don't have any specialists whatsoever.

It's so weak that it's the UK medical professional's achilles heel.

*gets coat*

Express and Joyce claimed he still might make sundays game. While others have said he's out for 2 weeks.

Its far to early to speculate about the injury, and if Ferguson was right about anything.

How shit is Liverpool's medical team that whenever someone picks up a semi serious injury they have to travel halfway around the world for treatment?

How do you reconcile those two paragraphs?

It shows that its all guess work at this stage doesnt it. So until there is something concrete from the club or after this visit in the US its all speculative.

I don't think it is.

You can take an educated guess what the injury is from the description. It's safe to assume its not responding to treatment or else he wouldn't be going to the States.

Those two things should be pretty concerning. It's an injury that technically you can play through but he's going to be limited until it heals fully.

This could mess up his entire season even if he does return in two weeks time

Rodgers would probably make that gamble if it can save his job. I think that is the reason Henderson played injured. He is under so much pressure that he won't care what is the best for the player long term. It is only the next game that count.
