Red Astaire seems to be struggling for names to throw in the so here's one from me.

The stylish oft injured captain of largely unsuccessful LFC teams, Jamie Redknapp. I think he was signed from Bournemouth for 300k before the end of Kenny's spell in charge, and worked his way towards club captaincy and England caps.

What's the verdict ?

Hero. Nice guy, good player, very professional and was very unfortunate to suffer from so many injuries.

Dull as dishwater when on tv though.

He was a terrific player and would have been a legend if hed stayed fit.
Unlucky to be part of Souness shite side and then largely injured after that.
His impact largely Zero but i call hero anyway.
Terrific player.

people dismiss him too quickly due to his injuries, the fact he was a "spice boy" with a pop star missus and now because of his media career . i reckon over the last 20 yrs or so he was up there with molby ,alonso and gerrard as our best passers and strikers of a ball , he had a lovely technique .He was a midfielder who could do a bit of everything , including tackling when needed and worked pretty hard . Scored some nice goals too as the vids above show .

Plus he was always very down to earth and approachable .

I'll go Hero

He had plenty of hero moments. Injuries struck him down though. His passing could be bloody frustrating as well. I remember him being one of the first players to be described as a 'crab like passer' - There were some pretty ace bits he did though. One of the things that I remember was him scoring that free kick against Blackburn. He rather pointedly did not celebrate as he thought that was curtains for KK to win the title. Turns out West Ham did enough anyway. I'll also remember him lifting a trophy (Carling Cup maybe) in 2001 with Fowler and Hyypia - 3 captains doing it together.

A Hero fo sho.

I just remember that Michael Thomas was having a great run in the team and him getting dropped for redknapp who wasn't playing anywhere near as well as him at the time.

Not sure about this one. He was a pansy in midfield was the king of sideways passing but scored some good goals.

Hero for me.
First name I ever got printed on a replica kit.
Excellent passer and had a good shot.
Pity he was injured so much.

Hero for me though frustrating as hell with injuries.

As already stated he could pass beautifully and had a lovely strike with some stunning goals. Didn't think his tackling was as good as some are suggesting but I thought a top player.

Was impressed with Robbie getting him to lift the FA cup. He was devastated not to have started himself but still thought about Jamie when it came time to drink in the success. Says something about Robbie but also says a lot about the esteem that the players had for Jamie.

Used to pass sideways an AWFUL lot... But a good tidy player no doubt, injuries robbed him of his peak year for his style of play.

Also a very dedicated and loyal servant of the club so... HERO.

Classy player (and a classy guy - was really friendly to everybody when I went to Melwood with the Alan Kennedy tour one time) but he didn't do enough to earn the "hero" tag for me. Unless you count bagging Louise maybe.

Undecided.

I'm surprised there are a few zero's here. Ex Liverpool captain. Scored lots of nice goals (when fit) plenty of trophies and by all accounts a nice bloke off the pitch. As far as I'm aware he has always spoken highly of LFC and regards his time with us the highlight of his career. Oh well - No pleasing some.

I sold him a hip hop compilation once in a record shop in Windsor.
Robbie Fowler bought the same one and borrowed a fiver off Jamie to buy it.

Hero. He seemed to lack a bit of drive/motivation but he was very skillful/creative. He was our Glenn Hoddle i.e. very good to watch but overall fairly ineffective.

I think alot of the zeroes come from his attitude in the media aswell, towards us. Especially the whole "Gerrard doesn't like playing in X position, so therefore hates his manager" bollocks.

Agreed. Lawrenson is the worst example, but Jamie Redknapp also falls into the trap of trying too hard to show how Unbiased with a capital U he is. They both need to watch Jocky Hansen and see how it should be done.

Surely to qualify for hero you need to have been a really important player for us, whether through winning key games to bring us glory, or for some cult hero status, someone that maybe wasn't the best player in the world, but would leave nothing out on the field to help bring us victory? I liked Redknapp but he doesn't clear that bar for me.

Not nearly.

I see things the other way around, you gain automatic hero status by playing* for LFC and have to do something negative to lose that status. Also, being shit doesn't lose you the status e.g. Djimi Traore and Steve Harkness are both LFC heroes in my eyes because they always gave 100% and it wasn't their fault we picked them regularly.

*Once they've played 50+ games.

Nah Pesam. They're not all heroes for me. You need to earn hero status, you don't just get it because you signed a fat contract to play at LFC. Fuck that.
