To be fair, GH got a team to scrape into 4th place in the EPL so that we could go into a competition with the top 32 teams of Europe; Jose got a team to win Serie A and the CL, thereby basically qualifying them for the final of the world club cup trophy. In other words, GH got us to the starting line for 2005 while Jose got Inter to the finish line and then left them for Rafa to hold their hand in the last two steps.

Even the most ardent Rafa fan can surely see the difference, Spion.

Inter Milan have confirmed Rafael Benitez has been sacked from his role as coach of the Serie A champions.

Benitez had been under heavy pressure after Inter slumped to seventh in Serie A and, although the FIFA Club World Cup success this month appeared to have handed him a reprieve, he issued a public ultimatum to president Massimo Moratti in the aftermath demanding backing in the transfer market.

Benitez, who left Liverpool in the summer after a disappointing season in the Premier League and Champions League, was handed the task of succeeding Jose Mourinho after their Treble-winning season.

His reign began badly, losing the European Super Cup to Atletico Madrid, and the side were never able to replicate the form of the previous season. Inter finished second, behind Tottenham, in their Champions League group, leading to a meeting with last season's beaten finalists Bayern Munich in the next round.

Following his ultimatum, reports surfaced at the start of the week that Moratti had moved to axe the coach, but it was not until Thursday morning that the decision was officially confirmed.

A club statement read: "Inter Milan and Rafael Benitez can announce that they have reached a mutually satisfactory agreement for the early termination of his contract. Inter thank Rafael Benitez for his work in leading his team to success in the Italian Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup."

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, dismissed by Moratti after winning his third successive Serie A title in 2008, believes Benitez has been harshly treated.

"The difference is that I was at the club for four years," he told La Stampa. "Benitez will have been there for six months if it's true that he is being sacked. As a colleague, I am sorry for him. Despite the problems Rafa's had, he's won the Italian Super Cup and the Club World Cup and I am sure that Inter will re-enter the title race.

"They weren't doing badly, but then again neither was I and that year we won the Scudetto again."

The former Liverpool manager's exit from Giuseppe Meazza was revealed by Sky Sports News HD on Tuesday evening and has now been rubber-stamped by the club. An agreement has been reached between the Serie A side and the Spaniard to terminate his contract with immediate effect after just six months at the helm.

Benitez was handed the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Jose Mourinhoafter the former Chelsea chief secured an unprecedented treble of the UEFA Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia titles. The 50-year-old has seen his side struggle in league action this season and they are currently seventh in the Serie A standings, 13 points adrift of leaders AC Milan, although they do have two games in hand.

Inter's defence of their European crown has also stuttered as they finished second in Group A behind Tottenham and suffered a miserable 3-0 defeat at the hands of Werder Bremen in their final group fixture. A meeting with Bayern Munich, who Mourinho's Inter defeated in the Champions League final last summer, was on the cards in the last 16, but there will be a new man at the helm for that fixture in February.

Benitez was on borrowed time after his outburst in the wake of the Club World Cup success when he called on club president Massimo Moratti to back him in the transfer market if they wanted him to stay as coach. Moratti pointedly refused to stand by the Spaniard following his explosive comments and after a number of days of behind-the-scenes negotiations, Benitez's exit has been confirmed.

The former Anfield manager, who remains a popular figure with some Reds supporters, is currently on Merseyside at his Wirral property as he contemplates his next move.

Rafa's favourite tactic, using the media to pressurise owners to shell out more transfer cash, is now pretty well known. I reckon managements all around Europe would be very cautious about appointing him, because they know what is in store for them.

Benitez famously blasted the club for not making the changes he requested, then saw Leonardo welcomed in with a series of high-profile signings like Giampaolo Pazzini, Andrea Ranocchia, Houssine Kharja and Yuto Nagatomo.

“I don’t know why there were no summer buys. I was the first to be surprised. I couldn’t believe it. In August I was asked for a plan to improve the squad and I wrote it out clearly, but it was ignored.

“During the January transfer window there were six players sold and five signed. Now it is practically a new team. Seeing part of my plan acted on now makes me think. It is an evident confirmation that I was right – this team needed changes.”

Benitez was also publicly blamed by many, including Jose Mourinho’s staff, of training methods that exacerbated the spate of injuries.

“I would like to point out some facts so as not to be misunderstood,” Rafa told Marca. “80 per cent of the players with muscular lesions had similar problems in the previous two years.

“My staff did not oversee the work of the medics. Treatment and recovery process was Inter’s work, not ours.

“After I left Inter, in one month there have been another eight muscular lesions. I’m sure it will sound familiar to Roberto Mancini, too.”

“Let's say that, seeing Inter's recent results, we thought that there would be a reaction from Benitez,” Moratti said.

“I haven't spoken to our doctor about this, but I think that he is a little hurt by these comments. But doctor Combi is one of several strong points at the club, even if Benitez means to say that he is to blame for the injuries. Unfortunately for him, it's not the case.”

Dejan Stankovic blames Rafa Benitez and his training methods for Inter’s poor campaign and again praises Jose Mourinho.

“The change of Coach brought drastic changes in the system of working and training,” the midfielder told Tuttosport.

“After two years, we were accustomed to Mourinho’s methods. Then Benitez came along and we tried to explain to him that these drastic strength exercises had to go way, but he wouldn’t hear of it.

“He insisted on immediately diving into his training programme with weights and a marathon run until we collapsed. He was persistent.

“The result was we had 30 injuries in October. We beat every record with regards to injuries and it’s because our muscles were on the verge of exploding. Each of us had at least two injuries on the go at once.”

Leonardo replaced Benitez on Christmas Eve, but he too has now left and Inter are tracking a new Coach.

“It’s a shame our season started so badly, but we knew that would be the case right from the start. Unfortunately by the time Leonardo arrived in December we were already a long way behind the Serie A leaders, but we gave it our all to catch up and finish second.”
