I like watching football and supporting Liverpool.

It sucks when we lose. When that happens, I wait for the next game and hope we win that one.

At the end of the season, it's awesome when we win a trophy.

I get a little sad when we sell a player I like. I get excited when we sign a new player and look forward to watching them play.

I love watching youth prospects get a chance in the team.

Watching a match with my dad is wonderful. It's our time, and gives us something to talk about for a couple of hours.

Post weekend banter with my mates used to be fun, though I don't spend time with anyone who follows the game these days other than my dad.

It's great having an excuse to not do things with my wife for a couple of hours on match days. I almost always watch games at home on my own.
I get sad when the season is over and my weeks feel empty until the new season kicks off, but it's always comforting to know it will come back.

Good old reliable football.

Never cancelled after a few seasons 'cos of ratings. No ambiguity in who the good guys and the bad guys are. No risk of my club deciding they didn't need me.

I enjoy football. Do you?
 
The only time I consistently enjoy football is when it's a world cup. I'm a neutral in it and watch every game.

I enjoy league football when we win, or our rivals lose. I don't enjoy it when we lose or our rivals win.

Domestic football, for the most part, I can't enjoy.
 
Not massively.

It’s more a LFC loyalty thing than a deep-rooted love for football. I hardly ever watch a non-LFC PL game, not really interested. If LFC took 12 months off, I probably wouldn’t see a game.

I’ll watch the World Cup/Euros but not the qualifiers.

I have no particular connection with the players; some seem like good eggs, most seem like entitled bell ends.

I haven’t been to a live game since Benitez first took over, not interested.

I don’t like talking to lads under about 30 about football, it’s a different game for them. I would never engage with a woman about football.

I hate the relationship between football and social media.

I don’t feel the massive highs from victory, more a sense of relief. I don’t suffer too much because of the lows.

I've only been to one live game, under Klopp, would definitely want to do it again if I could, but never at that sort of cost again, and I don't even watch the World Cup or Euros, not even the finals.

Other than that, everything you've said applies to me too. I still look forward to watching every Liverpool game though, and I enjoy it.

To me football is like most sports, it can be brilliantly exciting but also incredibly boring. I'm not sure how much I'd watch if I were a neutral. Probably the big games and tournaments, just like with cricket, tennis, snooker, F1, and a few other things like golf that I take a passing interest in.

I'm absolutely crazy about watching LFC though. It's not quite as intense as it was in my 20s when I basically wanted to smash the flat up when we lost, but I still really love it.
 
I don't enjoy watching football because it's not a game for me it's tribal.

I never enjoy the process of watching LFC as I kick every ball, moan at every misplaced pass or spurned shot, loathe every goal conceded, get angry at referees who I'm convinced are biased, get unnecessarily envious of successful teams especially legacy rivals.

I don't take defeat well and descend into melancholy and become thin-skinned until the next win and then I overreact and believe I support the world's rightful and deserving champions of all competitions entered.

I don't think I am really a football fan it's just a persona with ingrained partiality , entitlement that's sometimes a burden.

It's addiction to a vicarious lifestyle predicated on how LFC are at any time.

I often wish I wasn't interested in football and instead was interested in car maintenance or whatever.
 
I fucking hate professional football these days.

Like already said, it's kind of an addiction and loyalty with Liverpool - but other than that, fuck it all. I enjoy watching my local team though.
 
I do remember my playing days though - enjoyed that and all the preparation, camerarderie and especially a fit body even though it wasn't allied to great skills.

Now though I don't see a ball ahead, I mainly see a football like shape developing on my belly.
 
I love it. One of the highlights of my week. I watch other teams, occasionally other leagues. I'm only half paying attention while surfing on my phone but if there's a match on, I'd like to watch it.

This past weekend was the first time I could watch a match other than our own in some time and it was great. Me, a strong coffee, two cats and the couch.

It's a source of community: here and all my mates back in Winnipeg. Gives me a reason to be sociable and engage with others.

It's a justification to take a rest from all the hustle and bustle of life.

As I get older, I don't respond in quite as emotional a way to defeats anymore. But the victories still feel as sweet.

Modern football is shit in so many ways. I hate the rage-baiting supporter culture that has emerged. I don't watch YouTube videos breaking down tactics. I wish I didn't live on the other side of the world from the matches Id love to see in person.

But it's great. I love football.
 
I’ve learned over the years that there are a million and one things more important and enjoyable than football. But, I’ve loved this club since childhood so I’m always drawn in a little, no matter how much I tell myself I don’t mind if we lose or if rivals win.
 
I don't enjoy footy as much as I used to - I don't think I'd be as invested if both my boys weren't hooked on it.
It kinda sucks as after years of being behind those fucking mancs, I don't even 'give back' the way I should because I'm just not as interested.
I still love Liverpool, still watch games I can and hope they win everything but it is what it is.
I barely watch the World Cup or AFCON/Copa America/European Championships etc
 
Im the opposite. I liked watching football as a kid, but I enjoyed playing it more. I was decent at it too - winning school matches more than a few times by scoring goals that felt better than the pros did it. Now I'm past 50, I'm perpetually injured. Hurting in most joints from pushing my body to do stupid things when i was younger - so my body's betrayal means I cant play to any level that my mind would have me remember. And here I am in America - having made life choices to take me to a foreign land chasing fortune and glory. Got some of that, but now I lean into football to harken back to younger days. To regain my sense of wonder. To awaken the little boy in me again. So yeh - I like to watch it. It feels like time travel.
 
I watched the Maradona documentary the other day. There are some scenes, like the Argentinian commentary for his England goal, and some of the footage of Napoli in 86, that just makes you go, fuckin hell, what a beautiful game.

There was a time I could name every manager in the premier league. And most of the starting line ups. Now I'd struggle to get to 7 or 8 managers. And as for the players, sometimes premier league teams we play against have team sheets where I hardly know anyone.

My football viewing has become Liverpool only - and its been that way for a few years.

And I suspect if we slip into another average period, that might be the end of that.

Klopp leaving was a bit like the end of football for me in a way. I stayed interested last year because of the league position, but I dont know, I just think Klopp gave us one of the greatest teams I've ever seen, and I've seen us win a league title - something that for a long time I didnt think I'd ever see. And now maybe its time to tip my hat to the great game and say thanks but I'm on my way.

It was also the thing I connected with my dad most on for years and years. And he passed away last year, so that's contributed to me feeling less arsed.

But . . . there are still games like the opening game of the season. Anfield humming, end to end football, late drama - that I think - this is fucking fantastic.
 
I love Liverpool Football Club.

I have for 50-odd years now, so that'll never change.

I will always love the anticipation of the big, meaningful matches, planning my day around watching their games, meeting up with mates before / during / afterward to just escape real life together for a while, and hang out, talk shit and breathe for a while. I still love the triumphs as much as ever, but the defeats don't hurt nearly as deeply for nearly as long... Life has taught me some harsh lessons, so I've been able to put things in their rightful boxes.

I'll always love going to matches, when I get the chance. That will never change. Wonderful city. Wonderful people. Wonderful stadium. I'm always a 12-year-old boy for the day again, whenever I go over there, and I'll never tire of that escape.

I don't love football anymore, though.

I hate what it's become. All the cheating, diving bellends. All cheating, financial behemoths. All the incompetent officials.

All the idiocy that seems to pass as punditry now, both official (Carra, Mica fucking Richards, Rat Boy, etc...) and otherwise (All those Salford podcaster morons, AFTV, etc...). Dickhead fans with agendas against some of their own team, because they prefer a different player, who possess a medium to preach, as if anybody asked them their opinion. Wankers who follow players, not clubs. Wankers who 'follow' multiple clubs.

48 team World Cups, played in the desert. Utter, unashamed corruption.

Football is shite now. Maybe it always was, but I was too young and foolish to realize it... If Liverpool vanished tomorrow, I'd not watch another second of the pro game again.

But, until they actually do vanish, or I do, I'll always love Liverpool FC. At this point, LFC feels like family.
 
I think football is more professional than ever and worse than ever. There are too many games played with other games in mind. There are too many forced selections and second teams. There are too many irrelevant games. The quality of attacking play isn't less effective, but it's uglier, and forwards are just worse, because they select for discipline. There are too many tired players.

There's also just too much of it for me to give a shit.

But I do anyway, and that's why it'll keep getting worse.
 
I love football but at the same time have a visceral hatred of anti-football bus parking and play acting cunts like that penalty winning prick last night.
 
There's too much of it now, it's all meaningless but they have to produce more content and jack up the prices so all the people involved can make more money.

Like everything else.
 
I watch football in the same way as I have a shite or a wank. They're just things you have to do as part of the daily routine. If football didn't exist and they invented it today I'd laugh at it and say it was for dickheads. Zooming out, all sport is kind of weird. Why do humans do it? Even more, why do we care about other people doing it? I could go on, and I started writing something about that recently but I'm lazy and stupid and writing about something you think is pointless is even more pointless than engaging with the pointless thing.

Yet here we are.

Love watching the club
like watching other PL matches
Enjoy the world cup/euros
Go ballistic shouting at the tv when Ireland have a chance
LOVE seeing the games with me son
Like talking about it with my father (the only thing we can talk about really)
And it's also my day job, for the last 20 years.

And I'm going to the US Open final match tonight, Austin FC v Nashville with me son.
Austin's first chance for a trophy. It's kinda like the American FA Cup.

Wow. What is this? It's not poetry. It's like a free-form poetry. There might be a term or a word for it.
 
It's weird, isn't it? Do I enjoy watching the match? Sometimes, but a lot of the time, no. Do I enjoy getting together with my mates, having a curry and watching the match? Abso-fucking-lutely, and it's the being with my mates and having a curry that I really enjoy, but if it wasn't for the match we probably wouldn't do it.
So it serves a purpose. But as @Woland said, it's fundamentally absurd.
 
I don't watch football anywhere near as much as I used to. I rarely watch any teams other than Liverpool and I don't care about international football.

I go to some Liverpool games but I would never go and watch any other team. I remember when I was young I used to occasionally go and watch other teams with mates. I wouldn't do that now.

While I do think football is not as enjoyable now in itself, I also think that it's partly because it's everywhere. It was a bit of a big deal being able to watch a football match years ago. Now you can watch a football match any day of the week. That in itself makes it less appealing in a way.

Yeah, and let's be honest, we have it better than most. There are trophies, there are likeable players and managers, there are several classic games most seasons, and when we lose our shit about not being good enough, it's often the difference between top and top 4. It's not like we're in a relegation dog fight every season supporting a team full of arseholes who clearly couldn't give a shit. There's only the odd one or two of those.
