I liked Fraser but reading what Bournemouth fans thought put me off a bit, they don't seem hugely fussed on losing him
He's a strange one is Fraser. I watched a lot of lower league football a few years back and I remember him as an impact sub for Bournemouth who never really impressed (apart from his frenetic all-action commitment to the cause) but he never really was given much of a chance. He was loaned to Ipswich (the season that Bournemouth were to win promotion to the PL) and I think Bournemouth would have been happy enough to sell him at that stage (even though he was still only about 21),
He was a revelation in a very poor Ipswich team and quickly established himself as their main player and added a bit of substance to his energetic style. Bournemouth obviously liked what they saw because they got promoted and next season he became a regular in the PL. The step up in class actually seemed to suit him and he did very well. He'll never be the most sophisticated player on the pitch but his effort is impressive and he has developed into a decent player.
Someone mentioned Lundstram the other day and it made me smile because he has been one of my favourite lower league players for quite a few years (I was amazed to find out he's still only 25) because he has looked decent and classy at every lower league club BUT not decent enough (i.e. he didn't do enough to convince me he could play in the PL) for me to ever suggest we signed him.
It made me think of certain players who can look decent (not top quality) at lower levels but can also raise their game as the go up through the divisions, these players are very hard to spot. Bournemouth's Steve Cook being an example, he played many games in the bottom 2 divisions and was always solid but there was little evidence he could survive against top forwards but he has thrived.
The best LFC example I can think of (and Fraser is similar in style) was Ray Houghton who we signed from Oxford United almost as an after-thought (when we also signed Aldridge). There was little to suggest that Houghton had the quality needed for the top division although his workrate was never in doubt but he went on to have a very good career with us.
If we sign Fraser I reckon Shaq is a goner. I like Fraser but I am not sure he's going to have quite the same impact that Houghton had.
This post is all over the place but I am trying to sort the kids out for dinner/bathtime so apologies.
