That's true, but his career came to a screeching stop at Anfield and he wouldn't be the first to have been unable to give it a kick-start once something like that had happened. Certainly for the Wombles he looked the biz, as we found to our cost a time or two.
Fair enough, but him and Babb (whilst we are taking about the Wimbledon) were dire for us. They may have been talented for other clubs but they didn't show it for us.
No question, and there were others around at the time of whom the same could be said, e.g.McAteer and Scales. Unfortunately we became something of a graveyard for good players under Uncle Roy.

Id like to nominate Nicky tanner, Jimmy Carter, Dicks, Diomede, Paul Stewart, Kvarme, Pichnik, Diao, David Speedie.
David Speedie:
Scored on his debute for Liverpool getting the equalizer at old toilet, and scored twice in 4 mins in his second game against the blue shite, averaged a goal every 2 games he was a Liverpool player.

Yeah and even after those 1st 2 games my dad would tell me how shit he was. I suppose now as a result I just equate Speedie with the start of our decline. I suppose being used to the best then we signed speedie

There seems to be a confusion between our worst 'signing' and our worst 'player'

Our worst signings include Keane, Degen etc but not our worst players no way.

exactly. Morientes was one of our worst signings too, but was definitely a very good player.

Sean Dundee is a good shout as our worst player

Pretty artificial distinction, that, seeing as more or less all the worst players (Dundee being one, though IMO nobody will ever beat Tanner to that title) were signed as opposed to coming up through the youth ranks.

JJ, I share your opinion of Tanner being the all time worst player to grace the shirt award. I remember him coming on as a sub in a game at Anfield, and then later in the second half being substituted himself to raptuous applause from the Anfield faithful.

Degen. My god.

Surely he's the worst player we've ever signed?
That is quite a claim. We've had some right old shite.

He'd be one of them though. Given he was bought as a back up full back and has been injured whenever we have needed a back up, that is pretty useless.

When he actually played I don't remember him being totally inept actually.
Its at this point I usually mention Nicky Tanner or Jimmy Carter. Both iirc bought by the current manager. Or maybe they were Souness buys.

You do recall correctly. They were signed by Kenny.

I spent four years in Bristol in the late 70s/early 80s working and studying, I've kept a number of connections since those days and I can tell you that when we signed Tanner the football public down there did a collective Victor Meldrew and Could Not Believe It. They honestly thought it must have been a case of mistaken identity, since by and large they didn't even rate him as a Bristol Rovers player.
