After Irish tabloid the Irish Examiner reported that Liverpool have supposedly snapped up 14 year old Glen McAuley, Scott Taylor (@ScottTaylorUK) looks at the player behind all these rumours before giving his opinion on the matter.
Glen McAuley is a player that has attracted interest in many Premier Leagues clubs as of late, but it seems that the young Irishman has completed a move to Merseyside and in doing so fending off interest of Premier League giants such as Man City, Arsenal and Manchester United. Although he did trial with the Red Devils, they did not make a formal approach for him and it is beginning to feel like Manchester United’s loss is Liverpool’s gain. What is bemusing is that Sir Alex Ferguson held personal talks with him and his family yet still no move was evident. That gesture just goes to show how highly rated this youngster is. After seeing that talks didn’t go as to plan with Manchester United, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers also made face-to-face discussions with the youngster in attempt to bring him back to Liverpool. What may have influenced McAuley’s decision is that Rodgers started off working with the youth of today at Reading and then Chelsea and is a man that likes to make sure that there is long-term sustainability at Liverpool Football Club.
The Clondalkin youngster cannot join the Reds until his 16th birthday according to the rules of FIFA, but that are widening reports that he will continue to train and visit the Academy based in Kirkby until it is time to sign on a full-time basis, just like soon-to-be Liverpool player Conor Masterton is doing at this current time. If he is to sign for the Reds, he will be the 4th Irishman to currently Liverpool at Academy level behind Under 19 internationals Alex O’Hanlon and Daniel Cleary and 15 year old Masterton, and it is looking more likely that an Irish player will emerge through the ranks at Anfield and be the first Irishman to represent the Reds since the days of Robbie Keane in the mid 2000s.
Glen McAuley currently plays for St Joseph’s Boys after his move from Crumlin United last season and according to the Irish Examiner, many scouts were attracted to his talent in an Under 12 SFAI National Cup Final between Crumlin United and St Kevin’s Boys. Even though his former side has produced the likes of former Liverpool striker Robbie Keane, his current side St Joseph’s Boys also produce talent including former Manchester United and now Hull defender Paul McShane and former Wolves man Andy Keogh.

“I am impressed how Rodgers is planning for long-term sustainability and it’s crucial as with the budget that Liverpool have, they cannot simply buy players for positions in need of strengthening likes the Man City’s and Chelsea’s of today. Also, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge aren’t going to play forever, so getting a youngster in early and developing him around the philosophy of the club is second to none. Also, home-grown players are a lot cheaper and easier to develop that a transfer window signing evident in the rise of Joao Teixiera over summer signing Luis Alberto this season. The idea of bringing him over is crucial as he won’t need time to settle in and get to know his team-mates as he will be able to do that before he signs for the Reds on a full-time basis.”
