Is he a keeper?

  • Yes, but I'd promote Karius and keep Mignolet as back-up

That is what i don't get with these millionaire footballers. I mean if they practice something, say a corner kick or a goal kick for 30 mins after every training session for the rest of their career, at some point they should become decent at it no? But we have had mostly rubbish corner kick takers, even Gerrard wasn't that good at it.

Do they not train or do they just not have the flair to kick a dead ball? Or perhaps they are all just abit thick.
Unrelated I feel the need to mention Fabio Aurelio here. He was a terrific set piece taker. Probably our best since Barnes maybe?

Clemence started out as a terrible kicker of a ball. He worked hard on it and improved a bit, but it was always the weak aspect of an otherwise great keeper. In fact, he dealt with it by mastering the long and quick throw - thus starting a sort of club tradition for keepers that Reina also exemplified. Ming can't transform his kicking - he should still work at it, though - but he can certainly develop his throwing.
But unlike Clemence or Reina I don't think he has the game intelligence (therefore anticipation and reading of the game).
He can develop his kicks and throws but I don't reckon he'll ever know when to release it and to where.

Disagree. A while back Klopp called Mignolet one of the most intelligent keepers he's worked with. I reckon his problem so far has essentially been a lack of confidence and he seems to be addressing that..

I disagree from the evidence I've seen, but of course hope you're right.

Lately, I've seen a significant improvement in his decision-making in dealing with balls into the box. He's making correct judgments on what to do when he comes out and contests for an aerial ball - instead of just trying to punch or flap at it almost all of the time, he's now actually looking to catch it when he should. It seems a rather basic thing to do, but for a long period of time, he just wasn't able or willing to pluck the ball out of the air and stop the danger at that point.

His kicking still isn't great, and the least he could do is to get his wayward clearances across the halfway line instead of shunting them out for throw ins in our half.

I'm happy to see him make progress nonetheless, but we've seen bursts of good spells from him in the past, so I wouldn't proclaim him safe from being targeted for replacement just yet. Frankly, I'm not sure if he'll ever be able to erase the spectre of failings past and regain the full confidence of the fans or Klopp. He'll probably need a near-flawless goalkeeper of the year type of season to make people change their minds about him. He can start by keeping a clean sheet against Boro.

It's helped that he's had a settled central defensive pairing in front of him for the last month too.

I wonder if cashing in would be the best option. Anything over 15mil would be great!

We need better & he'd be decent for a mid table club.
